In the 2009 State-Funded Institutions Awards Ceremony, KRIHS was awarded the “Prime Minister's Citation” as the excellent federal research institute in 2009. Dr. Yang Habaek, senior research fellow at KRIHS, also won the

“National Dongbaek Medal” as the excellent researcher in 2009 for his contribution to social development by dedicating himself to national territory researches such as the Saemangeum Project. The Economic, Human, and Social Research Institute selects the most excellent researcher and institution annually among 23 national research institutions under the Prime Minister Office, based on the evaluation of research results and contribution to society. The awards ceremony was held at the conference room of the Economic, Human, and Social Research Institute on February 5 2010. The Prime Minister's Citation is the prize given to an institute that contributes considerably to national development. That day, KRIHS president Park Yangho received the prize on behalf of KRIHS, which was selected as the excellent research institute thrice in 2005, 2006, and 2008 based on

the evaluation of the Economic, Human, and Social Research Institute; its superior result and achievement also earned it the recognition as the best institute in the 2006 Public Institution Innovation Evaluation by the Ministry of Planning and Budget, the best institute in the 2008 Customer Satisfaction Investigation by the Prime Minister's Office. KRIHS was recognized once more as an excellent state-funded research institution under the Prime Minister Office for its outstanding results in the 2009 State-Funded institutions Awards Ceremony, which suggest its continuous contribution to territory development through conducting creative and leading researches.

On April 26 2010, KRIHS held the “KRIHS Brand Awards Ceremony”. The grand prizes of the KRIHS Brand Awards are given to the “Star Brand”, researchers that achieved excellent performance in the fields of research

performance, formation of policy agenda, contribution to policy, activity for reinforcing brand capability to develop a professional brand.

The “Star Brand” is selected from among all researchers in KRIHS. Dr. Chung Ilho, senior

research fellow, Dr. Lee Sangjun, senior research fellow, Dr. Lee Soowook, and Dr. Wang Gwangik won the KRIHS Brand Awards in 2010. During his congratulatory speech, KRIHS president Park Yangho said “I offer words of congratulations and encouragement to all the winners of the KRIHS Brand Awards. Let's all of us strive to contribute continuously to society to develop more creative and practical territory policies.”

Newly established this year to encourage and spread volunteer activities in its efforts to improve the community environment by sharing love with neglected neighbors, the “KRIHS Voluntary Service Awards Ceremony” was held at the KRIHS auditorium on April 26, 2010. The

“KRIHS Voluntary Service Awards” are given to those who recorded the highest rate of volunteering in 2009. This year, Dr. Cha Misook, research fellow, Dr. An Jongchun, associate research fellow, Mr. Kim Yongdae, administrative

staff, Ms. Park Jeongeun, associate research fellow and Mr. Sul Janghyun, administrative staff, won the award. During his congratulatory speech, KRIHS president Park Yangho said “I ask all of you to participate actively in volunteer works to gain greater trust and love from the people and the government. Through such activities, KRIHS will further commit itself to being a reliable research institute contributing to community developments by continuously promoting volunteer activities.

KRIHS held the “11th National Geography Olympiad Awards”, jointly sponsored by the Korean Geographical Society and the National Geographic Information Institute at the Seoul University SK Management Center on June 19.

The National Geography Olympiad has been held every year since 2000 for high school students nationwide to popularize geography in an

attempt to raise the awareness of Korea's status on the international stage, cultivate comprehensive thinking skills and creativity from the geographical perspective; promote understanding of the international society;

cultivate an attitude of cooperation with other countries; and enhance the ability to solve various problems facing Korea and the international society.

The awards ceremony was attended by 10 persons from the Ministry of Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs, National Geographical Information Institute, and Territory Education Council, and more than 20 persons from the Korean Geographical Society, National Geographic Teachers' Federation, and National Geographic Olympiad, and around 80 winners.

During his congratulatory message, KRIHS president Park Yangho emphasized the importance of the education of the national territory, patriotism, and future territorial strategies. The awards were divided into the teachers' and students' category. In the students' category, Song Eun-gyu from Gang-leung High School won the Korean Geographical Society Director's Prize; each of the 3 gold prize winners received the KRIHS President's Prize, the Korean Geographical Society President's Prize, and the National Geographical Information Institute President's Prize. A total of 10 students received the silver prize, with 50 bronze prize winners awarded the National Geographical Education Council Director's Prize. In the teachers' category, a total of 15 teachers received awards: Mr. Jung Gwangyong from Ganleung High School who

won the grand prize of the Land, Transportation, and Maritime Affairs Minister's Prize and 4 teachers including Mr. Park Sangyong from Daewon Foreign Language High School who won the Korean Geographical Society President's Prize. Kim Jigun from the Jeju University-affiliated high school won the KRIHS President's Prize in the students' category, with Mr. Park Seongjun from the Gongju University-affiliated high school, Ms. Lee Soonhee from Hyegang High School, and Ms. Huh Hyungjeong from Haksung High School winning the KRIHS President's Prize in the teachers' category. On the occasion of 11th anniversary award ceremony, the achievement award was given to staff members from the Geographic Olympiad, teachers, executives for making great efforts to promote the Olympiad over the last 10 years.

The 15th “Love Our National Territory” writing contest was held this year to make students understand the importance of the national territory and environmental preservation. Out of a total of 4,254 entries, 1 grand prize, 2 gold prizes, 4 silver prizes, 50 bronze prizes, 3 group prizes, 3 teacher prizes, and 300 encouragement prizes were given to winners, after three rounds of indepth evaluation.

This year, the ceremony was cancelled due to the outbreak of influenza.

5. A Ceremony to recognize Excellent Employees in 2010 and to celebrate New Year

The 2010 Excellent Employees Awarding Ceremony and the New Year Party were held at the auditorium of KRIHS on December 31, 2010.

Attended by all the KRIHS employees, the event comprised an awarding ceremony to deliver citations by external institutions to KRIHS researchers and to award citations to excellent KRIHS employees; opening remarks by KRIHS president Park Yangho; and a reception.

The Dissertation Evaluation Committee selects top dissertations after numerous deliberations and discussions and grants “The Excellent Dissertation Award.” The award system is established to enhance the quality of territorial research and stir up enthusiasm for research.

On December 27, the National Territorial Planning & Regional Research Division held a presentation for the excellent works selected in the “2030 Future Territory Thesis Contest for National College(Graduate School) Students” with regard to “Territory Forecasting Research(II)”,

which has been implemented as a basic project.

On December 29, 2010 KRIHS held the 9th Excellent Dissertation Award Ceremony, in which one best and two second best dissertations were selected out of 42 dissertations that were published in The Korea Spatial Planning Review in 2010. The selection criteria included the application of research outcomes in formulating territorial polices, creativity of contents, and validity if research methods.

Beumsik, director of the Green Territory and Urban Research Division, Dr. Lee Yongwoo, director of the Center for Mega Region Studies and students who wrote excellent theses in the contest.

The evaluation team consisting of internal and external experts selected three theses for the grand prize and gold prize through 3-phased strict evaluations, the three of which were presented and throughly discussed.

First, Park Namhoon and Kim Hyunwoo(Seoul national Univ.) presented “Future Territory Space, Arapolis”, in which measures to how to use submarine, undersea, and marine space as the future territory were explored for the vision of the Korean Peninsula, which is surrounded by water on three sides. Afterward, Lee Donggyu, Seo Inseok, and Yang Gowoon(graduate school of

government management, Sungkyunkwan Univ.) predicted the “Development of KTX High-speed Railroad Network and Change in Territory Space Structure in 2030”, using the Dynamic Modeling Analysis Method, and Kang Seungbum, Maeng Hyoyeol, and Seo Yunmi(Yonsei Univ.) forecast the “Future of foreigner-concentrated area in 2030” with the capital area as the center, and then proposed the aspect of multi-cultural society in the capital area and territorial policy using the scenario method.

With the presentation, the KRIHS judge’s understanding about the reason of selection of themes, awareness of the research method, the process of the logical inference of future prospect, and the quotation without permission, based on which one grand prize winner and two gold prize winners were selected.

Other objectives to accomplish on a globle level are: the UN Millennium Development Goals; the balanced global development and sustainable globalization; the economic development and improvement of human settlements; development agenda for developing countries adopted in the G20 Seoul Summit.

The GDPC, importantly, will share experiences and knowledge in the field of national territorial development through education and training programs. As part of its training programs, customized training programs for government officials from developing countries are to be implemented all year round. A broad range of subjects of the programs includes national territorial and regional planning, infrastructures and urban development, housing policy and green growth.

With regard to the planning and consulting, the GDPC will promote national territorial and policies by cooperating with various national

research institutes in developing countries.

Currently, the GDPC and the Vietnam Institute of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning(VIAP) are jointly researching for Vietnam's urban development and planning using GIS(geographic information system). It has also devised a master plan for the establishment of the national spatial data planning for Cambodia.

As part of this effort, the GDPC signed an MOU with the World Bank, on December 14, 2010, and is proceeding joint projects with developing countries and the MDBs to promote global development cooperation.

With regard to EAROPH Korea, on December 30, 2010, KRIHS launched EAROPH Korea Secretariat with a vision of establishing Green Growth and New Urbanization. In its endeavor, KRIHS will scale-up exchanges and cooperation with the EAROPH member countries. KRIHS will also support EAROPH Korea to effectively prepare for the 2012 EAROPH International Congress in Korea.

On December 30, 2010, KRIHS officially launched the Global Development Partnership Center(GDPC) and EAROPH Korea. The launch of the GDPC was driven by the current Korean administration which recognized the need for further establishing global human network as a way to promote the development of sustainable human settlements. Its goals are as follows:

led by Prof. Hong Kitaek, Chung-Ang University, the evaluation team for the first half of 2010 assessed self-evaluation papers and survey questionnaires in the selection process.

10. KRIHS Launches e-Book Service(www.krihs.re.kr)

KRIHS began “e-book service” on its homepage starting July 19. Its first e-book is 「The Territorial Policy Brief」, which are well received from visitors of the web-site.

This e-book service aims to enhance the quality of public service by providing various periodicals and working papers in the form of user-friendly e-book.

Currently, the e-book services provided

by KRIHS include 「The Territory Policy Brief」, and the translated OECD series titled 「City's Comp-etitiveness and Climate Change」, and are expected

to expand to periodicals such as 「Planning and Policy」, 「The Korea Spatial Planning Review」, and some working papers issued by KRIHS.

11. Publications

In 2010, KRIHS published various books to provide the public with rich information on national territory policies. They will contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of the nation's territory policies by providing practical strategies for national territory.
