M: Excuse me, I’m new here. Can you give me directions?

W: Sure. What are you looking for?

M: I’m trying to find the Wilson Theater.

W: (Go straight. It’s two blocks down, on the left.) 02

W: Are you doing anything special next weekend?

M: I’m going camping with my friends. Would you like to join us?

W: Sounds fun. Have you decided where to go?

M: (Yes, we’re going to Gangwon-do.) 03

W: Sam, your yard looks great!

M: Thanks. I took out all the grass and made a pebble garden.

W: I see. But why did you do that?

M: The city pays you $20 per square meter if you replace your lawn with pebbles, since it saves water.

W: I did something similar. I bought a cover for my pool to keep the water from evaporating. The city gave me $50!

M: They also give away coupons to car wash facilities. Going there uses less water than when you wash your car yourself.

W: These programs are great. Without these efforts, our city could suffer from a serious water shortage.

M: Yeah. Everyone needs to take action on this issue.

05

M: Hello, nice to meet you.

W: It’s an honor to work with you. I’ve heard many great things.

M: Thank you. Please go and change into this dress so we can get started.

W: Okay. [Pause] Are these the shoes you want me to wear with it?

M: Yes. They’re the focus of this shoot. Remember that when you’re posing.

W: Okay. What do you want me to do?

M: For the first few shots, let’s start with you sitting on this chair, facing the camera.

W: How would you like me to sit?

M: Cross your legs and rest your chin on one hand.

W: Like this?

M: Yes, that looks great. But try to smile more. [Pause] That’s perfect!

06

W: Which earrings do you think I should wear tonight? They should be special.

M: Let’s look in your jewelry box. I like this pair shaped like flames.

W: I wore them last time. What about this pair that looks like moons?

M: Well... I don’t like the stars hanging above the moons.

W: What about this pair that looks like the wings of an angel?

M: I think they’re too big. I prefer the pair with butterflies in circles.

W: Yes, I agree.

M: And the flowers hanging from the circles make them more beautiful.

W: I trust your taste.

M: Thanks. That pair will look great on you.

07

W: Are you hot? Shall I turn on the air conditioner?

M: That’d be great, but we haven’t used it yet this year. It’s too dusty.

W: You’re right. I can call a specialist to come clean it tomorrow.

M: But I’d like to use it right now.

W: I guess we can clean it ourselves.

M: Hmm... It’s a lot of work, but we can do it.

W: We have all the things we need to clean the filters and wipe down the outside.

M: Great. Can you bring them here?

W: Sure. I’ll go get them now.

M: Thanks. And I’ll start taking out the filters.

W: This shouldn’t take too long if we work together.

08

[Cell phone rings.]

M: Hello?

W: Hi, honey! Have you parked the car yet?

M: No, I’m still looking for a spot.

W: A lot of people came to this supermarket today.

M: I know. I don’t think I’m going to find a space soon.

W: You can just wait for me in the car outside of the entrance.

M: How long is it going to take you to finish shopping?

W: I think it may take up to an hour.

M: In that case, I’d better go home now and come back to pick you up later.

W: Okay. That would be much better.

M: Call me 15 minutes before you’re finished.

W: I will. Bye!

09

[Telephone rings.]

W: TV Super Shopper, how can I help you?

M: I’d like to order one of the home audio systems that are being advertised on your show.

W: Okay. The total price is $300 including taxes and shipping.

M: Is that the price for the four-speaker set?

W: No, that’s for the six-speaker deluxe set. The total price for the four-speaker set is $200.

M: I’d like the cheaper one, please.

W: Okay. How will you be paying for it? If you use a Visa card, you get a 5% discount.

M: I’ll use my Visa card then. The number is 2−3−7−9−0−0−0−1−4−5−8−0−7−9−8−6.

W: And what’s your address?

M: It’s 414 Hornby Street, Liverpool.

W: Okay. Your order will be delivered in about three days. Thank you for your purchase.

10

M: Mom, have you seen my book? I was reading it last night, and now I can’t find it.

W: Which book? Your French book is on your desk.

M: No, the book I borrowed from the library. The cover is blue and grey.

W: Hmm. I don’t remember it. How big is it?

M: It’s kind of small, but it’s about 3 centimeters thick.

W: Is it this book? It’s about the moon.

M: No, that’s for my science project. This is a novel from the 1940s.

W: Oh, is it by Tolkien?

M: I don’t think so. It’s called Animal Farm.

W: Oh, yes. It was on your bed. I put it on your bookshelf.

M: I see it. Thank you!

W: You’re welcome, Kevin.

11

M: Each year, hippopotamuses kill more people in Africa than any other animal. They spend up to 18 hours a day relaxing in the water. But when people enter their territory, they often attack suddenly. Although they appear to be slow and clumsy, they can actually run as fast as 30 km/h.

And they’re the third heaviest animal in the world, behind only elephants and rhinoceroses. This combination of size and speed is what makes them so dangerous. They also have teeth that can grow up to approximately 50 centimeters long. What’s more, their mouths can open up to 180 degrees.

12

W: Look at this poster. World Water Day is next weekend.

M: Which day is it?

W: Sunday, March 22nd.

M: Oh, there’s going to be a celebration in Seoul Grand Park.

W: Yeah. We should go. It is free for everyone, but we can donate money.

M: I think we should give at least $5 each. What events are going to be held?

W: The main events are a fusion music concert and a drawing contest for children.

M: Sounds fun! What time does it start?

W: It starts at 4 p.m. and finishes at 8 p.m.

M: Okay, I’ll go.

W: Great! We can go together.

13

M: Is your son joining the basketball team again this year?

W: No, I told him that he can’t.

M: Why don’t you want him to play?

W: It’s his last year of high school, so he needs to focus only on studying.

M: But playing sports is important for students, too.

W: I disagree. I think it only takes time away from their studies.

M: I played soccer in school, and I got very good grades.

W: Really? How did you handle both of them?

M: Being active gave me the energy and confidence to do well in school.

W: That makes sense.

M: And it also helped me stay healthy.

W: (Maybe he should play basketball after all.) 14

M: I tried to call you earlier. Why didn’t you answer your phone?

W: Ugh. My phone is not working right.

M: I was worried about you.

W: I’m sorry. It’s very annoying.

M: What’s wrong with your phone?

W: It turns itself on and off sometimes. I don’t know why.

M: You should have it fixed.

W: I took it back to the store where I bought it, but they said it would cost $100 to fix it.

M: Wow. That’s a lot.

W: I know. I only paid $150 for the phone anyway. And it’s old.

M: (I think you’d better get a new one.)

15

W: Mina is going to meet with a lawyer, but she’s having trouble finding his office; there are many lawyers’ offices on this street, and all the buildings look similar. So she calls the lawyer to ask him how to get there. His secretary answers the phone and Mina explains her situation. The secretary thinks the directions are too confusing, so she says she’ll send someone to bring her to the office. Mina agrees that this is a good idea. In this situation, what would the secretary most likely say to Mina?

Secretary: (Please tell me where you are.) 16-17

M: It’s a fact that many people begin to lose their memory as they get older. But according to researchers, this doesn’t have to happen. There are ways to make sure that you don’t suffer from memory loss when you become older. As people age, they are likely to do less exercise. But the same exercise that keeps your heart healthy may keep your mind healthy as well. Studies show that elderly people who exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight have better memories and fewer problems with their brains. Memory loss can often lead to more serious disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease. But keeping your body and mind active may be the key to preventing these illnesses. Older people are also advised to take time out to do crossword puzzles, take part in creative activities and be socially active. All of these things will help keep their minds healthy.
