요 약

In order to investigate spatial and temporal variability of trace metal contamination in Southeast Asian surface waters, the concentrations of major metals and lead isotope ratios were measured for 116 surface water samples from the Mekong river & its tributaries along Thailand (TC and TU) & Cambodia (CP) and the river along Malaysia (MK) during the dry and wet seasons in 2006. Metal concentrations were generally within the range of uncontaminated surface waters. Most metals showed higher concentrations in the wet season than in the dry season in both tributary and main stream of Mekong river. Ratios of lead isotopes were slightly higher in the wet season than in the dry season. The higher wet season metal concentrations and lead isotope ratios may be related to the increased release of metals associated with sediments from the river and surface runoff in response to frequent monsoon rainfalls. Concentrations of most measured metals were higher in TC and CP than in TU and MK in both seasons, especially in wet season. Lead isotope ratios were higher in TC than in TU and CP during two seasons. This may be related to metal sources from mining activities in TC, CP, and from Laos brought to TC.
