Piston seeks dialogue with Duterte on PUV modernization program
The Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (Piston) is seeking a dialogue with President Duterte amid concerns that the implementation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) might displace jeepney drivers and operators.
However, Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella assured the project would push through and government will continue to hold consultations with the transport sector about the financial assistance to upgrade their units.
“The Administration remains committed to the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), which is long overdue,” Abella said in a statement. “There were several attempts in the past to modernize the public transport system but these have been thwarted due to similar transport strikes, which unfortunately resulted in an outdated public transport system,” he added.

The United States and South Korea on Monday launched a joint naval exercise in a fresh show of force against North Korea over its growing missile and nuclear threats.
“The latest exercise is aimed at maintaining readiness against North Korea’s naval provocation and improving capabilities to carry out joint operations,” a South Korean navy spokesman told reporters. The 10-day drills are taking place on the southern side of the de facto maritime border known as the Northern Limit Line, the spokesman added.
