The behavior of leader-induced flock passing through a narrow opening between obstacles is very common in nature. There have been ongoing efforts to simulate such behavior in computer animations and robotics applications. Generally, such works assume that the movement of each member of the flock is independently determined in response to its local environment only, e.g., the speeds and the directions of its neighboring flock members. In our model, we address the importance of the leader-follower relationship to flocking behavior in biological systems. A separate set of rules for passing through the opening between obstacles is applied to the leader in the simulation so that attraction, repulsion, friction and alignment are simultaneausly determined in the leader-follower relationships. The computer simulation shows how the size of obstacles will induce diferent complex behaviors in a flock passing through an opening between the obstacles. Additionally, we study the dependence of the dynamics of the flock’s behavior on the leader’s velocity by using the magnitude of the average momentum as an order parameter.
