Basic Necessities Fund (BNF) is an organization whose objectives are to raise awareness about the lack of basic necessities in the countryside, and raise funds to build wells that would supply the people with drinking water. Our way to do this is to stage a play, which carries a social message.
Proceeds from ticket sales go to local NGOs there, which will build the wells. On January 1, 2012, we will be staging a play titled "The Other Side." However, staging it will require a lot of expenditure, from spot lights and sound equipment to arranging costumes and sets. Any monetary help towards these expenses would be appreciated, however small the amount is.
It will go a long way in forwarding our cause. Thank you for your consideration.

My dog, named Lisa, had a sweet tooth and as a result regularly informed me when my wife had been baking. One day my wife bought some very ripe bananas and baked my favorite banana bread. Trying to stop me from finding the treats, ① she disposed of the peels, froze the bread and sprayed air freshener around. Then ② she was smugly sure I would not find any trace of the bread. When I arrived home that day, ③ she greeted me in her usual fashion and went into the living room, pretending nothing had happened. Soon my buddy led me straight to the freezer and stared at me until I quickly took out a loaf of bread and shared it with her. This time my wife insisted I tell ④ her how I knew. So it was time to give the game away and tell her about Lisa, my partner in crime and ⑤ her devilish ways.

Democracy is a system of government that places a high value on individual dignity. It is difficult for people to achieve dignity in the contemporary world without ① actively participating as citizens. Thus, the most critical contribution democratic theory and practice can make to people ② are the restoration of a sense of self. If human beings cannot understand the meaning of humanness and that meaning is not deeply ③ internalized, it will be difficult to avoid warfare and other global disasters. No rational individual would likely support nuclear war today. A frightened mob, however, unsure of itself and the humanity of some enemy, could demand policies that make it ④ inevitable. Only when we understand that the irrational forces impelling us toward war and ecological disaster are a far greater threat ⑤ will the world be mature enough for survival.

Scientists will discover many subtle genetic factors in the makeup of human beings, and those discoveries will challenge the basic concepts of equality on which our society is based.
① Through systematic means, we have tried to get rid of our sense of differences based on superficial criteria such as race and color. ② However, conducting a true genetic analysis will lead us to differences based on a precise knowledge of heredity. ③ The results will reveal classes of people characterized by different genetic predisposition. ④ It is the combination of genetics with what humans experience that determines the ultimate predisposition. ⑤ Genetic differences will be reflected in what people do, where they work and what roles they play in society, and that is a very serious issue which raises the prospect of genetic discrimination.

In one of Dr. Fabre's experiments, a group of caterpillars (famous for traveling in long lines at the same pace giving no thought to their final destination) were placed onto the thin rim of a large flowerpot. The leader of the group was nose to tail with the last caterpillar in the slow, non-ending, deliberate procession. In the center of the flowerpot, Fabre placed an abundant supply of food. The caterpillars paraded around and around, day after day, night after night, until after seven days and nights, the caterpillars began to die off one by one. They died of starvation and utter exhaustion. The abundant supply of food was only a few inches away but slightly outside the path they traveled. Their source of life was visible but not available unless they altered their habitual and instinctive processionary process.

24. Is being overweight necessarily unhealthy in all cases? A ground-breaking study in The Lancet in 2007 found that about 30 percent of people classed as obese were actually metabolically very healthy, with low cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar. They were also responsive to insulin
― which isn't supposed to be true about fatter people. In short, one in three of those being endlessly told to lose weight may not need to. Their going on a diet may, in fact, . Researchers from the University of Montreal compared the effect of a low-calorie diet on a group of metabolically healthy obese people with a group who were obese and at risk. They found insulin resistance (a marker for diabetes) improved by 26 percent in the at-risk group but it got 13 percent worse among the metabolically healthy.
① boost metabolism
② be actively harmful
③ improve insulin resistance
④ make them gain extra weight
⑤ be coupled with low-calorie diet
25. Psychiatry is a subfield of medicine. To become a psychiatrist, one completes four years of medical school and then takes an additional four years of residency training in psychiatry. Thus, the defining difference between a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist is that the psychologist has a Ph.D. degree (which includes research training) and the psychiatrist has an M.D. degree (which includes medical training). Clinical psychologists and psychiatrists provide pretty much the same services for most of their clients― mainly, some form of "talk therapy." The chief difference between
them has to do with whether or not they can . Psychiatrists are trained to recognize medical
ailments and are licensed to say what medicine a sick person should take and to undertake other kinds of medical intervention. Psychologists are not.
① provide verbal therapy
② obtain a commercial license
③ prescribe medical treatments
④ identify underlying problems
⑤ hypnotize people as they want

26. By the start of the 1990s, Jeffrey Sachs, the noted economist, was placed to deal with one of the most important challenges in his field― guiding the transformation of Eastern European nations from command to free-market economies.
Through skillful mastery, Sachs helped several Eastern European countries make that transition successfully, transforming him into an even greater celebrity in his field.
With those successes, it was time to tackle Russia. He took a theory that seemed to have succeeded in other Eastern European countries and assumed it could work in Russia without considering what made the Russian case unique. He forgot that Russians had a distinctive history, culture, and set of experiences. He squeezed Russia into a box, but the nation refused it. After all, led him to fail in Russia.
① his personal hostility against Russia
② his insufficient hands-on experience
③ his belief that one size really fits all
④ overlooking the global financial crisis
⑤ his lack of knowledge about market economy
27. The most important consequence of Einstein's theory of relativity for philosophical thought has been . He destroyed the assumption that there is an all-embracing time in which all events in the universe have their place. Einstein proved that there is no experiment capable of determining absolute motion. Because time and space are measured separately, there always remains a degree of subjectivity that not only affects human observers, but all other things. Time and space are dependent on each other, forming a relationship that can be analyzed in many different ways. Time had previously been regarded as a fixed cosmic measure. Einstein introduced the idea of "local time", which means the rate of time passage differs from place to place. [3점]
① a solution to the origin of the universe
② a new perception that there's no local time
③ a revolution into measuring absolute motion
④ a rejection of subjectivity in scientific fields
⑤ a changed perception of time connected with space
28. Much of what we see on the computer can be too easily copied and manipulated. This is especially true of text and images found on the WWW. Student projects often feature text and images borrowed from existing websites. In many countries, a fair use provision within copyright law allows for learners to use some materials for in-class projects. However, it does not give learners the right to repost images and text onto the WWW. Plagiarism using materials from the WWW is also common but tools such as those found at www.plagiarism.org can be of some help to teachers who suspect their students of failing to .
*provision 조항

29. Over the years, an enormous amount of research has been done in an attempt to determine how a person's performance on an IQ test translates to real-life success. In general, the higher your score is, the more education you'll get and the more money you're likely to make. The British psychologist Liam Hudson, however, has written, "It is amply proved that someone with an IQ of 170 is more likely to think well than someone whose IQ is 90. But a mature scientist with an adult IQ of 130 is as likely to win a Nobel Prize as one whose IQ is 180." Once someone has reached an IQ of somewhere around 120, having additional IQ points doesn't seem to lead to any measurable real-world advantage. It suggests that .
① the effect of IQ on success has a limit
② IQ has nothing to do with real-life success
③ the highest IQ implies the greatest potential
④ IQ is an accurate descriptor to show success
⑤ effort rather than IQ is more critical to success

The boy advanced up the yard very slowly, holding his bag in his left hand, with his cap in his right hand. His feet were bare, covered with dirt and mud, and his face was wet with sweat. He tried to sneak into the house without making any noise. He knew his mother would be angry. At last he reached the door and, holding down his head, he entered the kitchen. The mother immediately jumped up and seized him by the shoulder. The boy screamed, dropped his bag and his cap and clung to her apron.

The Enlightenment brought numerous changes to European culture. Foremost among them was an increased ① scorn on human rationality. Philosophers moved away from theologically centered debates and focused on such intellectual exercises as empiricism and the limits of human reason. Thus, it is no coincidence that the classical perspective on deviance describes criminal behavior not as the result of some ② supernatural entity but as the fruit of human rationality. Classicists maintain that a person chooses deviant behavior based on an intellectual assumption that each individual wishes to ③ maximize pleasure.
Deviance occurs when an individual decides that the reward to be gained from an action ④ outweighs the potential risk associated with the behavior. Thus, a person who decides to rob a bank has determined that the potential profits from the robbery are worth the risk of ⑤ imprisonment.

One informal use of email is for the establishment of email penpal arrangements. Such penpals or penfriends are sometimes called net pals. Ideally, net pal communication is between someone learning the target language and a native speaker of the target language living in the culture of the target language.
(A) , a Nepalese student learning German corresponds with a native German-speaker living in Berlin. The advantage to the learner is that the native speaker is likely to offer extensive examples of authentic language, probably pitched at the appropriate age level of the language learner. (B) , both parties can find net pals a frustrating experience. Native speakers may feel the learners have nothing to offer in return for the exchange and the learners may find that slang and idioms interfere with comprehension.

35. Like tiny ripples that merge to form great waves, combined human intent is worth more than the sum of its parts. A single individual can initiate worldwide improvement by emitting conscious frequencies of love, beauty, goodness, and wisdom. A group of people focusing their energy on sending out light to the planet can set the stage for positive global transformation. All of us possess the ability to channel love energy, to heal, to be a conduit for white light, and to positively influence our fellow humans from afar. Imagine if each of us took a few moments at the start of every day to send out light from our hearts to the world. Mother Earth would be quickly eased, and the planet would be bathed in loving radiance. *conduit 통로

36. Charles Yesalis, a Penn State professor of health policies, questions whether performance-enhancing drugs will disappear from baseball any time soon. From his perspective, players don't have any incentive to clean up their sport because the public, especially young fans, view sports as pure entertainment, and sports only become more entertaining when the ball goes out of the ball park more often. In their eyes, how records are broken is irrelevant to the entertainment value. Owners and managers of baseball teams are also part of the problem. Like the fans, they don't want to know why someone who normally hits 45 home runs a season is suddenly hitting 65. All they know is that every seat in the stadium is filled and scalpers are getting hundreds of dollars per ticket. *scalper 암표상

37. pothos에 관한 다음 글의 내용과 일치하는 것은?
Pothos are long-growing, leafy vines that can reach 40 feet in tropical jungles, but usually confine themselves to about 6-10 feet in containers, where they trail freely. Although they can flower, it is rare to see one in flower. However, bloom period is mid-summer and the petal-less white flowers grow in spikes.
Pothos are perfect houseplants for areas that don’t get a lot of sunlight. They are tolerant of low light conditions and erratic watering. This makes them choice plants for places like offices and dorm rooms. Pothos are high on the list of plants that can help purify indoor air. They are excellent plants for busy people, non-plant people, even for black-thumbs. Vines left to grow on their own can get very tangled, so shake them loose every now and then to keep them from becoming a mess.

38. luminol에 관한 다음 글의 내용과 일치하지 않는 것은?
Luminol is a versatile chemical that exhibits a light- producing chemical reaction, when mixed with an appropriate oxidizing agent. It is a white to slightly yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in most polar organic solvents, but insoluble in water. Luminol is used by forensic investigators to detect trace amounts of blood left at crime scenes as it reacts with iron found in hemoglobin. For analysis of an area, it can be sprayed evenly across the area, and trace amounts of an activating oxidant will cause the luminol to emit a blue glow that can be detected in a darkened room. The glow lasts for about 30 seconds. It is important that the spraying be evenly applied to avoid creating a biased impression, such as blood traces appearing to be more concentrated in areas which received more spray.

Our galaxy contains enormous clouds of gas and dust called nebulae, which consist of leftover parts of old stars, lots of hydrogen, and a little bit of helium. A nebula has the potential to become a star.
(A) When this happens, the process called nuclear fusion arises. Nuclear fusion keeps the protostar from falling apart under the pressure of gravity. It also causes the hydrogen and helium gases to catch on fire, creating a new brightly glowing star.
(B) However, it must first become a protostar. When gravity pulls a cloud of gas and dust together, it contracts into a dense ball with a very hot center. This dense ball is called a protostar, and it is the beginning stage of a star's life.
(C) As the protostar heats up, its heavier elements are pushed to its core and the lighter elements, such as hydrogen and helium, move to its surface. Eventually, a protostar will reach the incredible temperature of 15 million degrees Celsius.

Until 150 years ago, a vast array of bananas grew in the world's jungles and they were invariably consumed nearby.
Some were sweet; some were sour. They were green or purple or yellow. (① ) A corporation called United Fruit took one particular type― the Gros Michael ― out of the jungle and decided to mass-produce it on vast plantations, shipping it across the globe. (② ) By the 1960s, the Gros Michael was rendered effectively extinct by a fungus called Panama Disease.
(③ ) Scientists from United Fruit managed to find a replacement that was immune to the fungus, and eventually stumbled upon the current banana, the Cavendish. (④ ) In the 1980s, the Cavendish too became sick. (⑤ ) There is a consensus among scientists that in 10 years we could have no bananas.

41. While you may find 24/7 connectivity useful initially, you feel it more distracting than helpful over time. For example, you might catch yourself checking your blog, Twitter, Facebook, etc., for updates every 10 to 15 minutes, even though you're in the middle of other work. This excessive connectivity has created false urgency where you feel the need to know what's happening lest you miss something important.
Furthermore, the web is so vast that it's easy to get lost in surfing. In reading a site, one link leads to the next. Before you know it you've already spent a good chunk of time surfing sites that are not related to what you're supposed to do. While it seemed like you were very busy switching between checking websites and doing your work, you were not getting much done.

42. For years now, we have heard that high self-esteem is a prerequisite for achievement. As a result, many students work in classrooms where posters proclaim "We applaud ourselves."
In some elementary schools, students complete sentences that begin "I am special because...." According to what has become established educational wisdom, children who are praised, even for their mistakes, will become confident, successful adults.
But kids who develop unrealistically high opinions of themselves can, when brought face to face with a more realistic version of who they are, become "potentially dangerous." Students inflated by self-esteem are likely to react with hostility or aggression when confronted by a world that fails to mirror their sense of significance.

43. Perhaps the most unusual fact about why humans are disproportionately dextrous is how little we know about its causes. An interesting theory grounded in evolution is the
"warrior and his shield theory." This theory explains that right-handedness evolved over time to be dominant because a right-handed warrior would hold his shield in his left hand to protect his heart and to leave his right hand free to hold a weapon. A left-handed warrior, in contrast, would hold his weapon in his left hand and his shield in his right, leaving his heart exposed. Thus a right-handed warrior, with his heart protected against enemy attacks, was more likely to survive. By the process of natural selection, the trait for right- handedness became favored over that for left-handedness.

44. You would think that your emotional state would depend on your own choices, actions, and experience. But it also depends on the choices, actions, and experiences of other people. The British Medical Journal recently analyzed data collected in its study to find out if happiness can spread from person to person and if clusters of happiness form within social networks. The data shows that the closer the happiness is to you the more you are affected. For example, a friend who becomes overjoyed and lives within a mile increases your likelihood of happiness by 25%. If a friend who lives less than half a mile away becomes happy, it increases your chances of being happy by 42%. Human happiness is not merely the province of isolated individuals.

Women are almost twice as often afflicted with depressed moods as men. There are many factors that contribute to this difference. Among them, researchers have looked intensively at cognitive factors that set men and women apart. They contrast the response styles of men and women once they begin to experience negative moods. On this view, when women experience sadness, they tend to think about the possible causes and implications of their feelings. They're staying with their emotional state rather than taking action to reduce the mood. In contrast, men attempt actively to distract themselves from depressed feelings, either by focusing on something else or by engaging in a physical activity that will take their minds off their current mood state.
The (A) response style of women, unlike that of men, increases women's (B) to depression.

Most liars are a dead give-away. Unless a person has been specially trained to hide the telltale signs of lying, it is very easy to detect a lie by reading a person's body language.
First of all, liars will avoid direct eye contact. They will often fix their gaze on something else in the room. Sometimes, they will look away completely and even turn their bodies away from the listener. However, if they do not blink, and if their eyes are wider than normal, chances are they are lying.
This is not to say that someone who looks you in the eye is telling the truth. Good liars know that looking away is indicative of lying and will therefore maintain eye contact.
Liars will also unwittingly indicate they are lying by fidgeting. These diversion tactics are meant to divert the listeners' attention away from the lies being told. Such fidgeting includes any hand movements or gestures toward the body, especially toward the face, mouth, neck and hair. Liars will also scratch their noses or behind their ears. And liars often want to create a barrier between them and the person being lied to; oddly enough, moving a small object such as a book between the liar and the listener is common!
Finally, there needs to be synchronization between what is being said and the corresponding body language. For example, the emotional gesture of smiling must correspond with the statement, "I love it!" when a person receives a gift. If the smile is ____________, you know that the receiver of the gift is lying.

The afternoon had not gone well. Chris Dunic, a firefighter, and his men of a search and rescue team from New York had met with a series of frustrations and futile leads as they combed through collapsed structures around Port-au-Prince for survivors. They had found no one for seven days after the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. He knew that time was running out for any survivors still clinging to life under the ruins.

Antons imagined what the traumatised boy saw: strange faces covered with masks and lights blazing. "We're scaring him," he told Dunic. That's when Antons began to sing. A nursery song. The only one (a) he knew in French. With a sigh, Kiki rolled forward into the waiting hands of Dunic, who passed Kiki to a rescue worker. (b) He spread wide his arms that had been pinned down to his body for a week and burst into a glorious smile.
(C)
The crew worked feverishly to dig a passage. Dunic sculpted off chunks of stone with an electric jackhammer and his partner, Brad Antons, took debris out to create an entryway. Suddenly the jackhammer broke through the last section of concrete, opening a doorway into the void. They saw Kiki, ghostly white from cement powder, with his head and shoulders caught between his knees. (c) He had lain there, unable to move for seven days. Dunic quickly widened the opening and then motioned for the boy to roll out. But (d) he would not move, muttering in French and shaking his head.
(D)
Then a report came in: A man rummaging through the remains of his apartment building had heard faint cries under the rubble. Dunic and his teammates rushed to the site and ran a camera probe into a mound of broken concrete, pipes and electric wires. The camera had come upon a tiny, dark, stifling space. Inside the void was a child bent over like a discarded rag doll. But (e) he was alive!
