Composite leading indicators point to weakening growth in major emerging economies but stable growth momentum in most OECD countries

Composite leading indicators (CLIs), designed to anticipate turning points in economic activity relative to trend, point to weakening growth in major emerging economies. CLIs point to growth below trend in Brazil, China and India, and to growth losing momentum in Russia.

For the OECD as a whole, and for the United States, Canada and Japan

1

, CLIs point to stable growth momentum. The same is true for the United Kingdom, where the CLI indicates that the growth momentum is stabilising at above-trend rates.

In the Euro Area as a whole, and in Italy, CLIs continue to indicate a positive change in momentum. In Germany and France, CLIs point to stable growth momentum.

Stable growth momentum in the OECD area Growth below trend in China

Stable growth momentum in the United States Positive change in momentum in the Euro area

The above graphs show country specific composite leading indicators (CLIs). Turning points of CLIs tend to precede turning points in economic activity relative to trend by approximately six months. The horizontal line at 100 represents the trend of economic activity.

Shaded triangles mark confirmed turning-points of the CLI. Blank triangles mark provisional turning-points that may be reversed.

The CLI for Japan may not fully capture the expected impact of the hike in its consumption tax rate in April 2014, the first increase since 1997, which is likely to result in an uneven growth profile during the first three quarters of 2014.
