PERMANENT MISSION OF THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA GENEVA
The 26th Session of the Human Rights Council <Check against delivery>
Agenda 4 (ID with COI on Syria) June 17, Geneva
Statement of the Republic of Korea
Mr. President,
The Republic of Korea would like to thank the Chair of the COI for his comprehensive briefing on the situation of Syria.
As we know, it has already been four years since the crisis in Syria broke out. During that period, the world has witnessed one of the most disastrous human tragedies in recent history. More than one hundred thousand people have died during the crisis and over 8 million people have become refugees or internally displaced. With the crisis continuing to escalate even further, the suffering of civilians due to violence and the lack of basic necessities is tremendous. The crisis in Syria has for far too long been a matter weighing heavily on the conscience of humanity.
We are concerned by the current deadlock in the political process to resolve the crisis.
It is our hope that the political process can be resumed despite the current political development in Syria. What is more disturbing is the appalling humanitarian situation on the ground. Under the circumstances where the large majority of civilians are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, all parties should recognize their deep responsibility to comply with all humanitarian obligations and guarantee the safe and unhindered passage of humanitarian assistance.
The Republic of Korea is strongly committed to international humanitarian efforts for addressing the dire situation of Syria and renders its unwavering support in all international endeavors to end the appalling crisis. In this regard, my delegation has two key questions to the COI.
1. What is your view on the prospect for the future political process after recently held presidential election?
2. How can the international community, especially this Council, do further under the current political circumstances? /End/
