His trembling hand had just found the door handle when somewhere downstairs there was a loud crash, and then almost immediately, another even louder one. David pushed the door open and looked out into the darkness. At the same instant, a light appeared at the bottom of the stairs and moved slowly up them. David watched, wide-eyed, and when the light reached the top of the stairs, he could see a large man carrying it. Frightened, he froze as the light moved noiselessly down the hall and disappeared into Amanda’s room.

다음 글에서 밑줄 친 this perspective가 의미하는 것으로 가장 적절한 것은?Advertisers have been so successful at playing on our selfish desires for ownership that today buying and being happy are considered virtually the same. It’s as if buying things is the only way to achieve happiness. We don’t think about this. We just assume it. Consider how widespread this perspective really is. Our streets are lined with shopping malls and stores. Every corner of our nation has been commercialized, even our national parks. We select our political leaders almost solely on what they promise to do for the health of the economy. It seems everything that surrounds us makes it difficult to resist consumerism.

다음 글의 요지로 가장 적절한 것은?The desire to improve your performance or to meet high standards is not the same as being perfectionistic. The desire to meet certain goals often helps you perform effectively in your environment. For example, students who don’t care about their performance in school probably don’t study as hard and are likely to perform more poorly than students who have high personal standards. If this pattern of performance becomes a habit, there are often negative consequences. Their grades are lower, and they may not be accepted into their preferred college or university. People at the top of their field, such as elite athletes, must also set high standards to achieve what they do.

Dear parents,
As already announced, our school festival “With Family, With Friends” will be held from August 1 to August 3. Because we are having a flea market as a special event this year, we are expecting a lot of people will come to the festival including family members and students from other schools. Our school parking space is limited and part of the parking area will be used for the flea market. Also, there is no parking available around the school. We, therefore, recommend visitors use public transportation on the days of the festival. Thank you for your cooperation.

다음 글의 주제로 가장 적절한 것은?Aggression is a combination of biological, cognitive, personality, and environmental factors. Knowing this, how do we limit and control aggression? One method is through catharsis. Catharsis involves releasing anger or aggression by expressing powerful negative emotions. For instance, when you are angry, you can talk to a friend or hit a punching bag for a while. Unfortunately, critics of catharsis believe that any expression of aggression is negative. They point out that expressing your aggression may lead to more aggression. Other strategies of controlling aggression include punishing people for violent behavior and cutting down on the amount of violence they are exposed to on TV or computer games. Excessive punishment, though, may trigger aggressive behavior.

다음 글의 제목으로 가장 적절한 것은?Most good relationships are far from perfect. There will always be those irritations, shortcomings, failures, and disappointments. I believe that 80 percent of a healthy relationship is working at any given time and only 20 percent of the relationship is not. The trouble is we often focus our attention on the 20 percent that is not working and fail to notice all the wonderful aspects of a relationship. We damage the relationship by choosing to focus on the negative. A healthier choice is to focus more of our attention on the 80 percent of the relationship that is working well. When people eat steak or chicken breast, they are eating animal muscle tissue. This tissue is made from several proteins, which in many cases are quite tough. In order to help ① soften the meat before cooking, many recipes call for the meat to be soaked in a marinade.

다음 글의 빈칸에 가장 적절한 것은?The shift from hunting to farming produced a fundamental change in human relationships with animals.
Traditional hunters typically view the animals they hunt as their equals. They exercise no power over them, although they may hope to persuade the animal to be more easily captured by means of certain magical or religious practices. This essentially equal relationship disappeared with the beginning of domestication. The domestic animal is dependent for survival on its human owner. The human becomes the master; the animals become his servants and slaves. By definition, domestic animals have to obey the will of humans and, for the majority of species involved,

She points out that children up to the age of four or five find it difficult to sing without moving their hands and feet. The composers Roger Sessions and Stravinsky have both stressed the connection with the body; and Stravinsky not only composed superb music for ballet, but also insisted that instrumentalists while playing. These differences suggest that symbolic gestures are not universal and can be culture specific. The symbolic gestures used by specific cultures can seem

다음 글에서 전체 흐름과 관계 없는 문장은?The vast majority of “emerging” viruses capable of infecting humans have “jumped” from animals to humans.
Fortunately, most new viruses seem not to spread among the human population. ① For example, bird flu has repeatedly jumped from domesticated birds to humans, but has not yet adapted to spread directly from those humans to others. ② However, some viruses have been able to spread from human to human after an initial jump from animals. ③ They include the Ebola virus, which most likely jumped from fruit bats to humans, and the MERS virus, which jumped from camels to humans. ④ In the early 1900s, millions of people were killed by the flu virus, but this virus is no longer a significant threat. ⑤ These differing outcomes led us to ask why only a few emergent viruses can be transmitted from human to human.

James : The decisions made by human judges may not be consistent. When robot judges with artificial intelligence make a decision, consistency will be guaranteed.

Researchers mailed water-flow restrictors to randomly selected sets of households, together with information about conserving water; another set of households received only information (not the devices). Not surprisingly, the group that received the water restrictors used less water.
But in addition, the device group, relative to the nondevice group, also turned down their boilers, cleaned their heaters, and installed automatic thermostats. Since they started conserving one way, they also conserved in other ways.
Getting people to complete a small environmentally responsible behavior can thus lead them to perform bigger ones, presumably because behaviors are changed to maintain consistency.

(A) A father and his daughter were playing in the park. His young daughter spotted an apple seller. She asked her father to buy her an apple. Her father hadn’t brought much money with him, but it was enough to purchase two apples. So, he bought two apples and gave them to his daughter.
(B) Suddenly his daughter offered an apple to her father and said, “Father, have this one; this one is much juicier and sweeter.” Her father was speechless. He felt bad about reaching this judgment about a small child so quickly. His smile came back now, knowing why his daughter had quickly taken a bite from each apple.
(C) His daughter held one apple each in her two hands.
Then her father asked her if she could share one apple with him. Upon hearing this, his daughter quickly took a bite from one apple. Then before her father could speak, she also took a bite from the second apple.
(D) Her father was surprised. He wondered what mistake he had made raising his daughter that she had acted in such a greedy way. Maybe his daughter was too young to understand about sharing. His mind was lost in thoughts. The smile had disappeared from his face.

We are living in a new age of literacy, one in which participation is the key word ― participation in a digital culture, participation in a democracy, and participation in a global conversation. What this participation mostly requires is writing. It may have seemed acceptable in earlier ages to focus on reading alone ― in times when workers simply needed to receive instructions and follow orders. But the emerging world involves sharing ideas, delivering thoughts, and expressing opinions. For our students to take their rightful place in this world, they need plenty of opportunities for flexible, thoughtful involvement with writing. Through this, our students will be equipped to be active world participants.

The 42nd Student Sculpture Exhibition was successfully held last week. The theme this year was traditional culture, and each participant created a sculpture made from Hanji. I read a book titled Flowering Friendship in the Civil War by Max Brockman. The book is about two friends who had to become enemies during the Civil War. The two main characters, Jim Morris and Luke Williams, kept their friendship despite having to fight each other in opposing armies. There were so many interesting things that kept me reading the book to the end. But what I liked most about this book was the last part when the two friends finally met again. Jim said to Luke, “Whenever I was about to lose hope, I remembered what you said. So, I kept telling myself what I should do : Never lose hope.” I think that’s the message the writer is sending to his readers. This book deserves a five-star recommendation.
