People often feel miserable and second-rate because they habitually compare themselves with others. Underlying this tendency is the mistaken belief that worth is determined by achievement. However, your worth as a human is a separate issue from what you do. For example, being an inferior dancer or an inferior cook does not make you an inferior person.

Memorize the following statement.󰡒I am not inferior. I am not superior. I am simply me.󰡓Whenever you notice yourself comparing yourself with others, recall this saying. Then, use the rational self-talk you have developed to remind yourself that your value as a human being has no relationship to others.

You are unique and because of this uniqueness it is impossible to do anything exactly like someone else. You can only do things in your own style and to the best of your ability. That is enough.

This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. For example, a student who listens attentively and takes notes in class is bound to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may get a high grade or score near the bottom of the class. The only way to determine a person's intelligence is to get to know him. Renting a car offers many attractive advantages to the traveler: independence, convenience, dependability, and a sudden, massive lowering of the IQ. I live in Miami, and every winter we have a lot of rental car drivers, who come down here seeking warm weather and the opportunity to make sudden left turns without signaling, across six lanes of traffic, into convenience stores. My wife and I have affectionately nicknamed these people 󰡒Dalinas,󰡓 because so many of them seem to get their cars from Dalina, which evidently requires that every driver leave his conscience as a deposit. We're tempted to stay off the highways altogether during tourist season, just stockpile food and spend the entire winter huddled in our bedrooms, but we're not sure we'd be safe there.

I just finished reading one of the best books I have ever read. It is called One Hundred Years of Solitude and was written by Gabriel. He won the Nobel Prize for this book in 1982. Briefly, it is the story of a fictional town seen through the eyes of many generations of a family. We learn about the changes that the town goes through. We also read about the universal themes of birth, death, love, and war as we spend time with this large and fascinating family. The writing is simple, yet beautiful, even in translation. If you are looking for a really good book to read, I suggest this book. I hope that you enjoy reading about these people and their lives as much as I did.

36. How did Monet create this unusual effect? The secret lies in the way he brushed paint onto the canvas. If you look at close-up detail of water lilies by Monet, you can see the lumps of oil paint, and even the scratchy marks made by Monet's brush. Also, he noticed that sunlight changes its position and intensity as the sun travels overhead. Monet wanted to paint the immediate effect of particular qualities of light on the landscape. So, he would work on a painting for only a half-hour at a time because after that, the light changed. Instead of painting very precisely and smoothly, as was typical for artists of the day, Monet loosely dabbed paint on the canvas, and he quickly painted his impression of the moment. * dab 가볍게 두드리다

37. When you want a direct answer, you should ask a closed question. For instance, if you want to know if your partner wants to go to a movie tonight, you shouldn't ask, 󰡒When's the last time we went to the movies?󰡓The answer to this question leads your partner to suggest your going to the movies. But if you really want to go to the movies that night, a closed question such as󰡒Would you like to go to a movie tonight?󰡓would prove more effective. Now, suppose you are in conflict with your roommate, and you have just explained your position. You want to know how your roommate feels about what you have just said. James Fenimore Cooper was born in 1789. His parents had 13 children, but only seven of them lived beyond their childhood. In 1790, the Coopers moved to New York State, where they started a community called Cooperstown. Then, Cooperstown was on the frontier, which later became the setting of many of Cooper's novels. Cooper went to Yale University but was expelled for misbehavior. After he joined the U.S. Navy, he was stationed in New York. There, he met Susan DeLancey, whom he married in 1811. After he left the Navy, he was short on money. To make matters worse, his five brothers all died, and he had to support their families.

41. According to anthropologist Irving Hallowell, there is no evidence that humans have an inborn sense of time. A person's temporal concepts are probably determined largely by culture. One study showed that infants, after a few days of listening to speech around them, will move their heads, arms and legs in rhythm with the speech they hear. As children develop, they adapt more fully to their temporal culture. This temporal culture influences language, music, poetry and dance.

It also affects relationships. We tend to get along well with people who share our sense of time.

42. Communication is a continual balancing act, juggling the conflicting needs for intimacy and independence. Intimacy emphasizes closeness and commonalities. Independence emphasizes separateness and differences. But men and women handle these conflicts differently. Women speak and hear a language of connection and intimacy, while men speak and hear a language of status, power, and independence. So, for many men, conversations are primarily a means to preserve independence and maintain status in a hierarchical social order. For many women, conversations are negotiations for closeness in which people try to seek and give confirmation and support.

43. People tend to behave in a way that reinforces their personal image of how successful or unsuccessful they are. In looking over applications for an M.B.A. program, an admission director noticed that some students had answered questions about their future plans with phrases such as 󰡒I am󰡓or 󰡒I can.󰡓 Other students had written 󰡒I hope to󰡓or 󰡒I might.󰡓

The words used by members of the first group represented a statement of belief that they could achieve specific goals. Not surprisingly, their academic records and outside accomplishments showed that these students had set and reached high performance levels. The students in the second group had lower expectations and less confidence in their ability to accomplish their goals. That may be one reason why their grades were somewhat lower than the grades in the more confident group.

44. As we get older, we seem to get more set in our ways.

This is often because we like what we like and in any case don't feel the need to branch out and try other things as much as we did when we were younger. However, in talking to centenarians, I found that many of them had made significant changes in their lives and felt that this was one of the reasons for their longevity. These changes did not need to be obvious ones, such as stopping smoking or improving a poor diet, but could involve anything different from what they were used to.

Examples were learning computer skills or a foreign language, playing a musical instrument, and taking up writing or painting.

Men have thicker skin than women, which explains why women get more wrinkles than men. The skin on a man's back is four times thicker than his stomach skin, a legacy from his four-legged animal in the past when he needed protection from a rear attack. Most of a boy's sensitivity to touch is lost by the time he reaches puberty and his body prepares itself for the rigors of the hunt. Males needed desensitized skin to run through thorny bushes, wrestle animals, and fight enemies without the pain slowing them down. When a man is focused on a physical task or sporting activity, he is unlikely even to be aware of injury.

󰡒Thank you, Your Majesty.󰡓

󰡒And what did you do for humans?󰡓said the God, turning to Dog.

󰡒I guarded their houses, Your Majesty.󰡓

󰡒Why did you guard their houses?󰡓

󰡒In the day time humans go out to work and at night they sleep very soundly, so I protected them at night.󰡓

󰡒I see,󰡓said the God, nodding his head.󰡒You also worked very hard for humans. As a reward I'm going to give you a fourth leg. Life should be (d)very easier with four legs than with three.󰡓

󰡒Oh, thank you, Your Majesty. I'll be always thankful,󰡓

said Dog, bowing humbly.

󰡒All right, Pig,󰡓said the God.󰡒How did you help humans?󰡓

󰡒Kkul, kkul.󰡓

󰡒What do you mean grunting like that?󰡓stormed the God.

󰡒I'm sorry, Your Majesty. I tried to think of a way to help humans but Chicken and Dog already had. So, all I did was eat what humans gave me and sleep.󰡓

󰡒You disobeyed me so I have to punish you.󰡓With one swing of his sword, the God cut off Pig's long nose.

Ever since then, pigs have had short noses, chickens have had red coxcombs and dogs have lifted their hind leg when urinating so as (e)not to make their gift from the God dirty.

(A)

Chemicals with a combination of these properties are commonly known as 󰡒Persistent Organic Pollutants,󰡓

or POPs. The combined effect of POPs on our health and on the environment is increasingly being studied and recognized. Some work has been done to control the use of POPs, but only a handful of chemicals fall under current government controls. Additionally, companies don't label their products with their chemical components, so consumers must do extensive research to learn about them.

(B)

Contrary to popular belief, POPs do not stay locked away inside of the materials where they are used.

These chemicals can escape and enter the soil during manufacture and disposal. Even during everyday use, they leach out and can enter our food chain. They can gather in household dust and enter the air that we breathe. They can also be found in children's toys and food containers.

(C)

Many of common chemicals are so toxic that they have bad effects on mammals and other animals. For example, one class of chemicals, called alkyphenols, can interfere with hormone systems and growth.

Alkyphenols are often found in shampoo. Another group of chemicals, called phthalates, which are widely used in vinyl flooring, are toxic to the reproductive system. Not only are these chemicals toxic, but they do not readily biodegrade. In other words, they will be on our planet for a very long time.
