Study on Problems Occurring in Elementary-school Science Classes Related to Electric Circuits

In spite of the several reforms in the curriculum from the third science curriculum to the existing science curriculum, many problems still occur repeatedly in elementary-school science classes. Upon some investigations, these kinds of problems have appeared in elementary school science classes related to electric circuits since the third science curriculum focused the inquiry activities. In this study, the status of these problems was investigated and discussed, and the causes of the problems were discovered through theoretical or experimental analysis. The analyses show that abnormal conditions of the batteries used as electric power sources and of the electric bulbs used as load resistances in the electric circuits are the main causes of the problems. In addition, the lack of knowledge and the misconceptions about batteries and electric bulbs of elementary-school teachers could also be causes of the problems.
