The decisive incorporation of non renewable energy to the Chilean market contributed to increment the appealing of the country for investment in the energy sector. Figures and indicators resulted positive at the end of 2016, despite multiple changes in the relevant regulatory framework.
Up to November 30th, there were 54 generation plants in the building process as well as 33 works in the transmission infrastructure. The generation works are equivalent to 2.825 MW, which means an investment of US$ 8.700 million.
2017 is projected as a key year for the promotion of numerous energy related initiatives, such as new regulations in the transmission spectrum, further building of infrastructure and institutional strengthening.

2016: a Year in which energy became an attractive investment field in Chile
Invest Chile reveals FDI projects for US$ 8.772 million
Invest Chile, the public agency in charge of attracting foreign direct investment to the country, announced progress after one year of its creation. According to the report 130 projects are being developed in different stages. They total up to US$8.772 million. From them, 59 projects are in the phase of “frequent contact with the prospective investor party”, in the phase of “project” are most of the initiatives with a projected creation of 2.404 job positions. The third phase regards the pre-investment and the forth group in the implementation or landing stage. Invest Chile provides counseling and orientation to foreign companies and individuals aiming at opening business operations in Chile.

A report elaborated by the University of Chile calls attention to the lost of biodiversity, natural resources, flora and fauna in Chile, which it has been considered to “shrink” the natural wealth of the nation. Different environmental concerns place emphasis on the irreversible impact on native forests and the danger of extinction among some animal species. The period under study covers 1999-2015.
The report calls the attention of the authorities in order to issue bills of protection and recovery from the environmental damages.

Experts, government authorities and different actors of the Chilean society have coincided in the importance of public policies to deal with climate change. This South American country signed the instrument known as COPT 21, an agreement adopted by numerous nations in order to implement measurements to reduce environmental impact. In the case of Chile, the commitment is to reduce the carbon emissions by 30%. Chile is still pending on the ratification of the instrument though. Nevertheless, relevant institutions are working on initiatives to implement the agreement once it is incorporated to the domestic legal framework.

Climate Change and Public policies in Chile:

After several years of delay, the bi-national project Aguas Negras to connect through land the northern parts of Chile and Argentina will be open for public bid in the first semester of 2017. The Inter-American Development Bank will provide financial resources for the construction of two-13.9 km. long corridors.
More than 20 companies have expressed internet in participating of the process. This work requires an investment of US$ 1,500 million.

First Trimester 2017: Public bid to build bi-national tunnel Aguas Negras, Chile-Argentina
National Commission of Energy CNE begins the process for a new energy public bid
The Chilean National Commission of Energy opened a new public bid for energy generation and released the basis for competition. The process considers 4.200 GWh annually from 2023 during 20 years, this surpasses the 3,800 estimated.
The plan is to call for offers in late January, 2017, receive proposals in early October and award electricity blocks in late October of the same year.
