(Course Description)

We will learn about a variety of social problems, such as poverty, health issues, minorities/discrimination, child abuse, to name a few.

수업 목표

(Course Goals) Learn social problems and research and brainstorm possible sooslutions to the problems.

강의 진행 방식 (Course Procedures)

English lecture. I will not accept students who do not try their best. I will not accept students who refuse to speak English in class. I will give credits to diligent, hard-working students who submit assignments & papers on time. I will give credits to those who come to class with preparation. I will also give credits to those who actively participate in class.

영어를 완벽하게 구사할 필요는 없으나, 수업중 한국어 사용 금지. 사회복지 영어수업에 영어로 공부하려는 노 력조차 하지 않은 학생은 받지 않겠음.

Students who are late and not prepared will not receive good grades.

학습 평가 방법 (Grading and Evaluation)

1. Attendance (10%): 수업은 반드시 출석하는 것을 원칙으로 한다. 3번 이상 결석하면 무조건 F 학점으로 처 리되고, 3번의 지각 및 조퇴는 1번의 결석으로 처리한다. 매시간 출석을 부른다. 군입대, 입원 등의 부득이한 경우는 증거자료를 제출하고, “미리” 과제와 시험을 보도록 한다. 과제와 시험을 치루지 않고 결석사유서를 제출하는 경우 학점을 줄 수 없다.

Social Problems well-being of the Asian/Pacific countries

Reading: OECD Korea Centre (2009).

Homework: Pick an issue from the reading. Conduct further research and write a short essay (1-page long) on the issue. You will be presenting in class.

Social Problem and Poverty Measurement of Poverty Causes of Poverty Solutions to Poverty

Reading: Zastrow(2000). pp.128-140.

Homework:

1. Summarize case example 4.1 on page 134. Then, illustrate a similar case from your experience (e.g., field work, volunteer, neighbors, relatives, etc.) or even from a newspaper. Explain why wealth and poverty perpetuates in certain cases.

2. Who are the poor? Provide Korean statistics of each poor population category.

3. What is "social stratification"?

The concept of "Underclass"

Movie: The Blind Side, 2009.

Reading: Wilson(), 103-116.

Homework: Define "lower class," "underclass," and "ghetto poor."

Remember, you will be discussing how the movie, The Blind Side, portraits underclass.

1. What is the definition of family?

2. Why is it the case that the sole parent households are relatively poorer than the two-parent households?

The Policy Stance Towards Sole-parent Families

Reading: OECD(2011), 219-236.

Homework:

1. List all income-support programmes geared towards sole parent households?

2. Tax system can also help sole-parent families in maintaining good income. How is it so? However, tax treatment has its limitations in supporting sole-parent households? What are they?

3. What is "child support?" How important is child support in relieving child poverty?

1. List kinds of child abuse and neglect.

2. What are the consequences of child abuse and neglect?

3. What is "emotional abuse"? How can you detect emotional abuse?

Sex variances

Reading: Zastrow(2011), 241-242, 244-250.

Homework:

1. What was the interpretation of "sexuality" of Sigmund Freud?

2. What were the findings of Alfred Kinsey in his study?

3. What is "tolerated sex variance?"

4. You can find seven myths of homosexuality in our textbook. Which myth/belief most interests you?

From reading the facts, has your belief changed or just remained the same?
