The substitution effects of transition metals of Ce
2T
17Si
9(T=Ni and Co) were investigated by the measuring magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat capacity. When Co is substituted rather than Ni, the unit-cell volume of Ce
2T
17Si
9decreases; thus, the chemical pressure increases.
The chemical pressure strengthens the interaction between the conduction electrons and the local electrons in the Ce atoms. By this effect, the Kondo interaction in a Co-substitution compound is stronger than that of a Ni-substitution compound. As compared to a Co-substitution compound, a Ni-substitution compound complies with the Curie-Weiss law until much lower temperatures. For these two compounds, the Kondo interaction is more dominant than the RKKY interaction; thus, a valence fluctuation from 4f
1to 4f
0occurs, and no sign of magnetic order is observed.
