KBS·MBC·SBS 등 지상파 3사가 불공정 거래를 통해 국내 최고 인기 스포츠인 프 로야구 중계권을 향후 4년간 독점한다. 한국야구위원회(KBO)의 중계권 협상 창구 인 KBOP 관계자는 15일 "2011년부터 2014년까지 공중파 및 케이블 방송 중계권 까지 지상파 3사가 모두 가져가게 됐다. 조만간 계약을 체결할 예정"이라고 밝혔다.
지상파 3사는 중계권 독점의 대가로 현재 연간 108억원 수준인 중계료를 180억원 으로 올려주기로 했다고 이 관계자는 덧붙였다. 방송 시장에서 독과점적인 지위를 가진 지상파 3사가 중계권료를 대폭 인상하면서 서둘러 프로야구 중계권 협상을 마친 것은 올 연말 선정 예정인 종합편성채널(종편)을 사전에 견제하겠다는 의도가 숨어 있다는 것이 방송 관계자들의 얘기다. 특히 프로야구의 인기가 갈수록 높아지 면서 스포츠 분야의 킬러 콘텐츠를 선점하려는 의도가 짙게 깔려 있다는 지적이다.
프로야구 출범 이후 중계권을 독점해온 지상파 3사는 '우선 협상 대상자'라는 우월 적 지위를 이용, KBO가 새로운 중계권자를 선정하지 못하도록 압력을 행사해온 것 으로 알려졌다. KBOP 관계자는 "그동안 프로야구의 성장에 지상파 3사의 공로가 컸다는 점에서 중계권 협상 때 우선권을 주지 않을 수 없었다"고 말했다.계약이 체 결되면 지상파 3사의 계열 케이블 채널인 KBS N스포츠, MBC스포츠플러스, SBS ESPN을 뺀 나머지 케이블 채널들은 원칙적으로 프로야구 중계를 할 수 없게 된다.
최성진 서울과학기술대 교수는 "지상파 3사의 행태는 경쟁자의 시장 진출을 방해 하는 전형적인 독과점업체의 행패"라며 "지상파들은 지상파방송에서 케이블방송 까지 수직 계열화하며 점차 독과점을 전이시키고 있다"고 했다.
