Point 정리 Last summer I learned about the Inca

Project in Peru while I was researching how I could spend my summer vacation in a meaningful way. The goal of the project is to preserve an Inca archaeological site in Peru.

I decided to participate in the project since it would give me an opportunity to both travel and take part in a real archaeological dig.

Even though I was excited about the project, I was also nervous because I had never before traveled alone to such a distant place. The site of the dig was near Cusco, a city that was once the capital of the Inca empire, high in the Andes mountains.

Traveling to Cusco was not easy. I had to change flights twice, once in Los Angeles, California, and again in Lima, Peru, before finally arriving in Cusco, 32 hours after I left Korea. In Cusco, the local staff welcomed me with a warm "Buenos dias, Yena." The director introduced me to the other

international volunteers who arrived at the same time. They came from many different countries including England, Canada, America, and Belgium.

지난 여름에 나는 여름 방학을 어떻게 의미 있게 보낼 수 있을까에 대해 조사하던 중 페루의 잉카 프로젝트에 대해 알게 되었다. 그 프로젝트의 목표는 페루에 있는 잉카의 고고학 유적을 보존하는 것이다. 나는 이 프로젝트가 내 게 여행도 하고 실제 고고학 발굴에도 참여하는 기회를 제공할 것이기 때문에 이 프로젝트에 참여하기로 결정했 다. 비록 내가 이 프로젝트에 대해 마음이 들떠 있었지만, 그토록 먼 장소로 혼자 여행한 적이 전혀 없었기 때문에 긴장되기도 했다. 발굴 장소는 쿠스코 근처였는데, 쿠스 코는 안데스 산맥 고지대에 위치한, 한때 잉카 제국의 수 도였던 도시다. 쿠스코로 이동하는 것은 쉽지 않았다. 나 는 한국을 떠난 지 32시간 후 마침내 쿠스코에 도착하기 전에, 캘리포니아 주의 로스앤젤레스에서 한 번, 그리고 페루의 리마에서 한 번, 이렇게 두 번 비행기를 갈아타야 했다. 쿠스코에서 현지 직원이 내게 “안녕하세요, 예나 씨.”라고 따뜻한 인사로 맞아주었다. 소장님은 같은 시각 에 도착한 다른 국제 자원봉사자들에게 나를 소개했다.

그들은 영국, 캐나다, 미국, 벨기에를 포함해 다양한 나라 에서 왔다.

Point 정리 Cusco is a beautiful city with old

constructions. We stayed in Cusco for two days, recovering from the long hours of flight and adjusting to the high mountain area. We took advantage of the time to tour the city and to see something of the surrounding area. On the first day, we visited

Sacsayhuaman, a huge Inca stone construction. The construction includes a great square with three big walls. I was amazed that the huge stones for these walls were placed very tightly together. The next day, we went to Pisac, a historic site located on a mountain slope of the Sacred Valley.

On our way to the site, there was a town where the main square and market were crowded with local people. At the market, I bought a cute doll from a woman who had made it herself. For dinner that evening we had ceviche, a dish of fish soaked in lime juice. This sweet and sour local food was served with sweet potatoes and corn. I had not eaten any Peruvian food before. All the dishes that we ordered were delicious.

쿠스코는 오래된 건축물들이 있는 아름다운 도시이다. 우 리는 장시간의 비행으로부터 회복하고 고산 지역에 적응 하며 이틀간 쿠스코에 머물렀다. 우리는 시간을 활용하여 그 도시를 관광하고 주변 지역을 돌아봤다. 첫째 날, 우리 는 거대한 잉카 석조 건축물인 삭사이우아만을 방문했다.

그 건축물은 세 개의 큰 벽으로 이루어진 큰 광장을 포함 하고 있다. 나는 이 벽들을 이루는 거대한 돌들이 매우 촘 촘하게 배치된 것을 보고 감탄했다. 다음날 우리는 신성 한 계곡의 산악 경사면에 위치한 역사적 유적인 피삭에 갔다. 이 장소로 가는 길에, 지역 사람들로 붐비는 주 광 장과 시장이 있는 마을이 있었다. 시장에서 나는 한 여자 로부터 그녀가 직접 만든 예쁜 인형을 하나 구입했다. 그 날 저녁 식사로 우리는 라임 주스에 담근 생선 요리인 세 비체를 먹었다. 이 달콤새콤한 지역 음식은 고구마와 옥 수수와 함께 제공되었다. 나는 이전에 페루 음식을 먹어 본 적이 없었다. 우리가 주문한 모든 음식들은 맛있었다.

Point 정리 After seeing Cusco, we moved to Huyro, the

site where we would be working. My heart beat at the beautiful surroundings. I was excited about the work I would be doing. All the staff and other volunteers who had arrived in Huyro earlier welcomed us with warm hearts. The next morning we began working at the site. To arrive at the site, we had to walk up a mountain for thirty minutes. I imagined that we were in an Indiana Jones movie, making a path through the forest to find evidence of the ancient Inca civilization.

At the archaeological site, we pulled out weeds and cut down trees that had grown to cover the site. Then, while digging at the site, we found some pieces of ancient pottery. The head archaeologist, a Peruvian, discovered a large pottery piece. He said it might have been the side of a pot that was used to store beans. By early afternoon, working in the heat and the thin air, I was exhausted. After days of hard work, however, I was pleased that I had been part of such a worthy project as preserving the remains of the ancient Inca civilization.

쿠스코를 관광한 후 우리는 작업할 장소인 후이로로 이동 했다. 아름다운 주위 풍경에 내 가슴이 뛰었다. 나는 내가 할 일에 대해 들떴다. 모든 직원들과 후이로에 먼저 도착 한 다른 봉사자들이 우리를 따뜻하게 환영했다. 다음 날 아침 우리는 유적지에서 일하기 시작했다. 유적지에 도착 하기 위해 우리는 30분 동안 산을 걸어 올라가야 했다. 나 는 고대 잉카 문명의 증거를 찾기 위해 숲속을 통과해 길 을 내며, 우리가 인디에나 존스 영화에 등장하는 상상을 했다. 고고학 유적지에서, 우리는 잡초들을 제거하고 유 적지를 덮을 정도로 자란 나무들을 잘라냈다. 그 후, 유적 지에서 땅을 파다가 우리는 몇 점의 고대 도자기 조각을 발견하였다. 페루인인 수석 고고학자는 큰 도자기 조각을 발견했다. 그는 그 조각이 콩을 보관하는 데 사용되었던 항아리의 한쪽이었을지 모른다고 말했다. 이른 오후 시간 이 되자, 열기와 산소가 부족한 공기 속에서 일한 탓에 나 는 기진맥진했다. 하지만 며칠 동안 힘든 일을 한 후에 내 가 고대 잉카 문명의 유물을 보존하는 것과 같이 그토록 값진 프로젝트의 일원이었음에 기뻤다.

Point 정리 Besides our archaeology work, we visited a

local elementary school once a week. We taught and played with the children in the morning and we read to the children from books in the library in the afternoon. Although they didn't have much, the children were happy and thankful for what they had. That moved me deeply. Near the end of our visit, having completed our volunteer work, we went by train to the nearby ruins of Machu Picchu. The ancient sky city welcomed us with its grand view of the Urubamba Valley far below. We could not imagine how the Inca could have built such a large city on top of a high mountain. We were amazed by the outstanding building skills of the Inca civilization, which prospered more than five centuries ago. After my unforgettable days in Peru, I returned to my daily life at home. The happy moments I spent there went by so fast.

I wished I could have stayed longer.

Participation in the Inca Project was a blessing to me, allowing me to learn the importance of volunteering. I received far more than I gave from the experience.

고고학 작업 이외에 우리는 일주일에 한 번 지역 초등학교 를 방문했다. 우리는 아침에 아이들을 가르치고 함께 놀았 고, 오후에는 도서관에 있는 책들을 아이들에게 읽어 주었 다. 비록 그 아이들은 많이 가지지 않았지만 행복했고 자 신이 가진 것에 대해 감사했다. 그것이 나를 깊이 감동시 켰다. 우리의 방문이 끝날 무렵, 봉사 활동을 마무리한 후, 우리는 기차를 타고 근처의 마추픽추 유적으로 갔다. 그 고대 하늘 도시는 저 멀리 아래에 보이는 우루밤바 계곡의 장관으로 우리를 환영했다. 우리는 잉카인들이 어떻게 높 은 산 정상에 그토록 큰 도시를 건설했는지 상상할 수 없 었다. 우리는 5세기도 더 전에 번성했던 잉카 문명의 뛰어 난 건축 기술에 놀랐다. 페루에서의 잊지 못할 날들을 보 낸 후에, 나는 고국의 일상생활로 돌아왔다. 그곳에서 보 낸 행복한 순간들은 매우 빨리 지나갔다. 나는 그곳에서 더 오래 머물 수 없었던 것이 아쉬웠다. 잉카 프로젝트 참 여는 내게 축복으로, 봉사 활동의 중요성을 알게 해 주었 다. 나는 이 경험으로부터 내가 베푼 것보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 얻었다.
