The subjective approach to probability is the most vague and the least scientific. It’s based mostly on opinions, feelings, or hopes, ① meaning that you typically don’t use this type of probability approach in real scientific endeavors. You basically say, “Here’s ② what I think the probability is.” For example, although the actual probability that the Ohio State football team will win the national championship ③

are out there somewhere, no one knows what it is,

even though every fan and analyst will have ideas about what ④ that chance is, based on everything from dreams they has last night, to how much they love or hate Ohio State, to all the statistics from Ohio State football over the last 100 years. Other people will take a slightly more scientific approach ― evaluating players’ stats, looking at the strength of the competition, and so on. But in the end, the probability of an event like this is mostly subjective, and although this approach isn’t scientific, it ⑤ sure makes for some great sports talk amongst the fans.

If you ask someone to name three sports, most likely he or she will be able to answer with ease. After all, nearly everyone has an idea about what types of activities are regarded as sports and which are not. Most of us think we know what sports are.

(A) Activities that are regarded as play today may gain the status of sport in the future. For example, many people once played badminton in their backyards but this activity was hardly considered a sport. Since 1992, however, badminton has been an Olympic sport!

(B) In fact, devising a definition that establishes clear and clean parameters around what types of activities should be included and excluded is relatively difficult to do.

(C) However, the line drawn between examples of sports, leisure, and play is not always clear.

There is growing evidence that dependence on automobile travel ① contribute to insufficient physical activity, transport-related carbon dioxide emissions, and traffic congestion. The city of Freiburg in Germany ② have been successful in applying sustainable transport policies that may influence car-oriented countries around the world. Over the last three decades, transport policies in Freiburg ③ has encouraged more walking, cycling, and use of public transport. During this period, the number of bicycle trips ④ have tripled, travel by public transport has doubled, and the proportion of journeys by automobile ⑤ has declined from 38% to 32%. Since 1990, motorization rates have stayed the same and carbon dioxide emissions from transport have fallen, despite strong economic growth.

Eye-blocking is a nonverbal behavior that can occur when we feel threatened or don’t like what we see. Squinting and closing or shielding our eyes are actions that have evolved to protect the brain from seeing undesirable images. As an investigator, I used eye-blocking behaviors to assist in the arson investigation of a tragic hotel fire in Puerto Rico. A security guard came under immediate suspicion because the blaze broke out in an area where he was assigned.

(A) Oddly, in contrast, he did not seem troubled by the question, “Did you set the fire?” This told me the real issue was his location at the time of the fire. He was questioned further by the investigators and eventually admitted to leaving his post to visit his girlfriend, who also worked at the hotel.

(B) Unfortunately, while he was gone, the arsonists entered the area he should have been guarding and started the fire. In this case, the guard’s eye-blocking behavior gave us the insight we needed to

_______________________________.

(C) One of the ways we determined he had nothing to do with starting the fire was by asking him some specific questions as to where he was before the fire, at the time of the fire, and whether or not he set the fire. After each question I observed his face for any telltale signs of eye-blocking behavior. He blocked his eyes only when questioned about where

The birth of a child in a family is often the reason why people begin to take up or rediscover

photography. In many ways, photographing a child is little different from photographing any other person. What makes it different, however, is the relative height between a young child and an adult. Using the camera at your own head height works well for photographing adults, but for children the camera will be tilted downward. You are looking down on the child, literally and metaphorically, and the resulting picture can make the child look smaller and less significant than most parents would like. It is possible to obtain more natural-looking portraits when the camera shoots from the same level as the child’s eyeline instead of being tilted. For an eight year old, this might mean sitting down when

shooting; and for a crawling baby, the best approach may be to lie on the floor.

Inappropriate precision means giving information or figures to a greater degree of apparent accuracy than suits the context. For example, advertisers often use the results of surveys to prove what they say about their products. Sometimes they claim a level of precision not based reliably on evidence. So, if a company selling washing powder claims 95.45% of British adults agree that this powder washes whiter than any other, then this level of precision is clearly (A) [inadequate / sufficient]. It is unlikely that all British adults were surveyed, so the results are based only on a sample and not the whole population. At best the company should be claiming that over 95% of those asked agreed that their powder washes whiter than any other. Even if the whole population had been surveyed, to have given the result to two decimal points would have been (B)

[ridiculous / rational]. The effect is to propose a

high degree of scientific precision in the research. Frequently, however, inappropriate precision is an attempt to (C) [reveal / disguise] the unscientific nature of a study.

① inadequate / ridiculous / disguise ② inadequate / rational / reveal ③ sufficient / ridiculous / reveal ④ sufficient / rational / reveal ⑤ sufficient / ridiculous / disguise

The adult brain is plastic in other ways, too.

Although the property of brain plasticity is most obvious during development, the brain remains changeable throughout the life span. It is evident that we can learn and remember information long after maturation. (①) Furthermore, although it is not as obvious, the adult brain retains its capacity to be influenced by “general” experience. For example, being exposed to fine wine or Pavarotti changes one’s later appreciation of wine and music, even if encountered in late adulthood. (②) For instance, one of the characteristics of normal aging is that neurons die and are not replaced. (③) This process begins in adolescence, yet most of us will not suffer any significant cognitive loss for decades because the brain compensates for the slow neuron loss by changing its structure. (④) Likewise, although complete restoration of function is not possible, the brain has the capacity to change in response to injury in order to at least partly compensate for the damage. (⑤)

Many years ago I visited ① the chief investment

officer of a large financial firm, who had just

invested some tens of millions of dollars in the stock of the ABC Motor Company. When I asked how he had made that decision, ② he replied that he had recently attended an automobile show and had been impressed. He said, “③ Boy, they do know how to make a car!” His response made it very clear that he trusted his gut feeling and was satisfied with himself and with his decision. I found it remarkable that he had apparently not considered the one question that an economist would call relevant: Is the ABC stock currently underpriced? Instead, he had listened to his intuition; ④ he liked the cars, he liked the company, and he liked the idea of owning its stock. From what we know about the accuracy of stock picking, it is reasonable to believe that ⑤ he did not know what he was doing.

A primary school teacher is helping students to understand fractional parts by using what she thinks is a commonplace reference. “Today, we’re going to talk about cutting up a Thanksgiving holiday favorite ― pumpkin pie.” She continues with an explanation of parts. Well into her discourse, a young African American boy, looking puzzled, asks, “What is pumpkin pie?” Most African Americans are likely to serve sweet potato pie for holiday dinners. In fact, one of the ways that African American parents explain pumpkin pie to their children is to say that it is something like sweet potato pie. For them, sweet potato pie is the common referent. Even the slight difference of being unfamiliar with pumpkin pie can serve as a source of interference for the student. Rather than be engaged actively in the lesson, he may have been preoccupied with trying to imagine pumpkin pie: What does it taste like? How does it smell? Is its texture chunky like apple or cherry pie? In the mind of a child, all of these questions can become more of the focus than the subject of fractions that the teacher is attempting to teach.
