Objectives: The aim of this national population-based retrospective study was to analyze the relationship of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) with incidence of laryngeal cancer.
Methods: Patients with laryngeal cancer (ICD-10: C32) between 2009 and 2010 were retrospectively identified and followed it until 2015 from the Korean Health Insurance claims database.
Results: During the 7-year follow-up period, 5,322 subjects were newly diagnosed with larynx cancer. Compared to those without larynx cancer, participants with larynx cancer were older (mean age 63.29 vs. 47.7 years, p<0.0001) and the proportion of men with larynx cancer was higher compared with those without (93.16% vs. 6.84%, p<0.0001). Age, gender, smoking status, alcohol intake, and exercise-adjusted hazard ratios indicate that participants with MetS had 1.13-fold higher hazard of having larynx cancer than those without MetS. The number of MetS components was a strong risk factor with a higher risk estimate of laryngeal cancer in people with never, ex- and current smoker.
Conclusion: MetS was an independent risk factor for incidence of laryngeal cancer. These findings suggest that MetS is associated with biological effects that contribute to the development of laryngeal cancer.
