The Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s (EPHI) Press Statement on Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19)

Global Situation

 By the time this press release was compiled, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) report on February 25, 2020 there are eighty

thousand one hundred forty two (80,142) confirmed cases and two

thousand six hundred ninety eight (2,698) have died because of COVID-19.

 34 countries including the new reports from Lebanon, Oman, Bahrain and Afghanistan have reported COVID-19.

National Situation

 Since January 24, 2020; 191,707 passengers have passed the seven

screening gates at Bole International Airport (BIA). Out of these 4,821 are from countries that reported COVID-19 cases.

 During the last week 45,350 passengers have passed through the 7

screening gates at BIA. Out of these 920 are from countries that reported COVID-19 cases. Totally 324,555 have passed through the screening at all points of entries.

 There were a total number of 72 rumors were received by EPHI’s

Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and all have been investigated. Out of these rumors 18 had symptoms similar to COVID-19 and were in the Isolation Center until their laboratory results proved that all are negative and all of them were released from the Center.

 18 passengers that had symptoms similar to COVID-19’s were isolated and now after their samples were found to be negative, all have joined the community. And in the last week the 14 days follow ups on 390 passengers has been completed. Currently 829 passengers are under follow up.

 12 new rumors were received by the Institute’s Public Health Emergency Operation Center since February 18, 2020 and all have been investigated.

 The technical task force which is led by the Institute’s Director General has met and put directions for the way forward.

 The Institute and regional Public Health Emergency Management

coordinators have met, by the support of CDC Africa abroad training on points of entry surveillance and IPC and case management was provided.

 Interim protocols are shared to all for use.

Precaution

If you have arrived from COVID-19 (Corona Virus disease) affected countries:

 Avoid close contact with other people as you proceed to your home and stay in isolation from family members or friends for 14 days.

 Please provide the right information about your health situation for follow up teams who call you daily for 14 days

 If you experience fever, cough and shortness of breath, call 8335 immediately for medical help.
