INTRODUCTION
The liparid genus Careproctus Krøyer, 1862 is mostly bathydemersal fishes from deep-sea of the continental slope in the world. This genus is a large taxonomic group, comprising about 115 species and species-rich in the family Liparidae (Chernova et al., 2004; Knudsen and Møller, 2008). The genus includes about 50 species in the North Pacific (Chernova et al., 2004) and 22 in Japan (Nakabo, 2002; Sakurai and Shinohara, 2008; Kai et al., 2011a). However, only two species, C. rastrinus Gilbert and Burke, 1912 and C. notosaikaiensis Kai, Ikeguchi and Nakabo, 2011 have been recorded from Korea (Kim et al., 2001; Ji et al., 2012).
The family Liparidae has been reviewed by many au- thors, e.g., Burke (1930), Kido (1988), Andriashev and Stein (1998) and Chernova et al. (2004). Especially, Kido (1988) described about 18 species of Careproctus morph- ologically from Japan and subsequently, several new species have been reported in North Pacific (Imamura and Nobetsu, 2002; Orr and Maslenikov, 2007; Sakurai and Shinohara, 2008; Kai et al., 2011a). In addition, Knu- dsen et al. (2007) and Kai et al. (2011b) reported mole- cular phylogeny of five Careproctus spp. and phylogeo-
graphy of Careproctus rastrinus species complex, respec- tively.
During a recent bottom gill-net survey at Donghae-si, Gangwon-do, East Sea, we collected a single specimen of the genus Careproctus at 507 m depth (Fig. 1). This is identified as the Careproctus colletti Gilbert, 1896, and therefore herein described as the first record. Counts and measurements as well as cephalic pore terminology and the count of pectoral fin rays followed those of Andria- shev and Stein (1998) and Orr and Busby (2006), respec- tively. The number of fin rays and vertebrae were count- ed from radiographs prepared by soft X-ray (Hitex Co., Japan). This specimen is presently deposited at Ichthyo- logy Laboratory in Pukyong National University (PKU), Korea.

ABSTRACT A single specimen (373.2 mm SL) of the snailfish Careproctus colletti was collected by gill-net at Donghae-si, East Sea, Korea. This species is characterized by having the slender and stick- like teeth, lower end of gill opening not reaching to upper origin of pectoral fin, rays of lower part of pectoral fin long, reaching behind anus and margins of dorsal and anal fin dark. We described it as the first record to Korean fish fauna, and proposed the new Korean name “Meok-bun-hong-kkom-chi” for this species.
Key words : Liparidae, Careproctus colletti, new Korean record, East Sea

Color of preserved specimen. Body and head overall light brown; abdomen blackish; pectoral and caudal fins whitish.
Distribution. Donghae-si, East Sea, Korea at 507 m depth (present study), Japan, Okhotsk Sea, Bering Sea and Alaska at 65-1, 350 m (Kido, 1988; Nakabo, 2002).
Remarks. The present specimen belonged to the genus Careproctus based on some morphological characters;
the disk present, nostril single, pseudobranchiae absent and fewer rays of pectoral fin rays than anal fin (Kido, 1988). Subsequently, it was identified as Careproctus colletti by number of fin rays, teeth shape, gill opening location, length of lower part rays at pectoral fin (Kido, 1988; Nakabo, 2002). Meristic and morphometric charac- ters of the present specimen agree well with previous descriptions given by Gilbert (1896), Burke (1930) and Kido (1988) (Table 1). However, body depth among mor- phometric characters of our specimen was slightly high- er than that of Kido’s samples (32.0 vs. 18.9~30.7), may be due to the abdomen expansion and soft body (Fig. 1).
C. colletti is similar to C. roseofuscus Gilbert and Burke, 1912, of North Pacific in meristic characters, however, it is distinguishable from the latter in having a long fila- mentous soft rays of lower part of pectoral fin (vs. short in C. roseofuscus) (Nakabo, 2002). This species differs from C. rastrinus in Korea by gill opening location (lower end of gill opening not reaching to upper origin of pec- toral fin vs. reaching in C. rastrinus). In addition, this species is distinguished from C. notosaikaiensis known from Korea and Japan recently by teeth shape (slender and simple teeth vs. tribed in C. notosaikaiensis), number of dorsal (57 vs. 52), caudal (9 vs. 10), pectoral (30 vs.
35~37) fin rays and gill rakers (12 vs. 8) (Ji et al., 2012).
We herein propose a new Korean name, “Meok-bun- hong-kkom-chi” for this species.
