1. Japan ready to provide Phl’s security needs

Philippine Ambassador to Japan Jose Laurel V said Japan is ready to provide the Philippines its security needs because it wants the South China Sea to remain open to ensure the free passage of its goods. He further noted that Tokyo depends on Manila because it is located in an area where its shipments pass through that’s why Japan is prompted to help the Philippines in terms of security.
2. Japan fascinated by Duterte leadership

Philippine Ambassador to Japan Jose Laurel V said President Duterte is invited to Japan because the Japanese government is “fascinated” with his leadership. According to Laurel, the Japanese have been impressed by how Duterte was able to move the economy with “trickle-down” effects. He also noted that diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan are enjoying a golden era.

3. PH competitiveness ranking remains low Philippine Daily Inquirer, 29 May 2019, p. B1
The IMD World Competitiveness Center ranked the Philippines 46th among 63 economies evaluated, improving its position from 50th in the previous year. The country’s skilled workforce, economic dynamism, cost-competitiveness, open and positive attitudes and high educational level of people are cited among the most compelling reasons for business locators.
Compared to 13 Asia-Pacific countries included in the survey, however, the Philippines ranked second to the last, beating only Mongolia.
