Australia has a strong interest in ensuring Sri Lanka continues its
development as a secure, stable and prosperous partner in the Indian Ocean region, underpinned by an effective post-conflict reconciliation process.
Strategic direction
The Australian aid program in Sri Lanka is managed through an economic partnership approach. Our focus on catalysing economic opportunities for all Sri Lankans contributes towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10 to reduce inequality. All our investments are designed to support social unity and reconciliation.
Three objectives guide the program Sri Lanka:
• expand economic opportunities for the poor;
• support government to be more responsive to the needs of citizens and the private sector; and
• increase gender equality.
We endowed 151 new Australia Awards for Sri Lankan students to study in Australia in 2017. Over 2016-17, 32 Australian Volunteers for International Development worked in Sri Lanka.
Program highlights
• The Market Development Facility signed its 17th business partnership in tourism and related sectors that promote inclusive growth and reduce poverty.
• The Governance for Growth investment delivered an ambitious Corporate Plan to strengthen the Board of Investment, and an Investment Promotion Certification Training Program to help build the Board’s skills base.
• The Women in Local Government activity strengthened the capacity of the Centre for Monitoring Electoral Violence and the police to monitor and reduce violence against women in election.
• We supported the establishment of a long-term research partnership between the Monash University Eliminate Dengue Program and the Sri Lankan Department of Health.
