작년에 집에 정전이 된 적이 있다. 아파트 건물 공 사를 한다고 하여, 사전에 공지된 정전이었다. 10 시간 이상 전기가 들어오지 않아서, 조금 불편했다.
냉장고에 있는 모든 것이 녹을 위험이 있어서, 미리 대비를 해야 했다. 다행히 낮 시간 동안 진행되어, 어둠 속에서 불편함을 겪을 필요는 없었다.
그리고 또 한번은 몇 개월 전인데 전원 차단기가 계 속 내려간 적이 있다. 두꺼비집을 열고 전원을 다시 올렸는데, 그래도 차단기가 계속 내려갔다. 어딘가 에 누전이 발생했던 것이다.
결국 여러 가지를 확인해 본 결과 에어컨에 문제가 있는 것 같았다. 수리 기사를 불러서 에어컨을 수리 하고 나니, 문제가 해결 되었다. 누전은 전기 화재 등의 사고로도 이어질 수 있어서, 그 이후 특히 더 조심하게 되었다.

A: 저런, 운이 참 안 따라 줬네. 어떻게 됐는지는 얘기 안 할게.
B: 고마워. 오늘 밤에 VOD로 다시보기를 할 예정이야.
electrical short / short circuit 누전, 합선
우리가 흔히 누전이나 합선을 '쇼트'라 하는 것과 마 찬가지로 굳이 electrical short나 short circuit 라고 하지 않고 short라고 해도 무방하다. 또한, short 혹은 short out라는 말은 누전이 발생하는 것을 뜻하는 동사로도 사용이 가능하다.
The fire was caused by an electrical short.
그 화재는 누전 때문에 발생했다.
The machine broke because some wires had shorted.
전선에 합선이 발생해서 기계가 고장 났다.
