The purpose of the study is to develop an analytical framework for the exemplification type of a science textbook and to verify its validity by analyzing one middle school science textbook for 7th graders. By reviewing previous research and interviewing science textbook writers, we designed an analytical framework for the exemplification type of a science textbook. The framework consisted of 5 categories : logical arrangement, context, presentation form, external representation, and level of

guide-discovery. Additionally, one science textbook was analyzed and the result showed the validity and usefulness of the framework. In conclusion, this analytical framework gave us the numerical information on the characteristics of the examples used for students’ understanding of concepts.
