The Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health, established in 1967, is a historic journal that has published 42 editions to date.
Moreover, it has the highest impact factor among 23 journals in the field of dentistry that are searchable in the Korea Citation Index. Despite its lengthy history and notable accomplishments, the Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health is facing an op- erational crisis to the point that it is experiencing difficulties in collecting enough articles for publication this year. It is believed that this may be attributable to the influence of the evaluation system of universities that give greater recognition to articles that are published in international databases, such as SCI or SCOPUS. However, since every researcher has the desire to share his or her work with as many people as possible, it is natural that they want to publish articles in international journals.
As of 2018, a total of 223 journals are registered in the medical sciences field in the National Research Foundation of Korea, with another 48 candidate journals. Among these, there are 4 SCOPUS-registered journals and 8 PubMed Central-registered journals in the field of dentistry. Among the 4 SCOPUS-registered journals of dentistry, 3 are English language journals, while 1 is Korean/English language journal. The Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health is a Korean/English bilingual journal with the ability to publish articles in English, but most of the articles are being published in Korean. Scientific writing is not required in English. It is also true that it is necessary to publish the research results in Korean so that they can be read more widely in Korea.
The Journal of Korean Academy of Oral Health has reached a point in time were efforts from all of its members are needed to revive and further advance its original publication goals. For this purpose, what is needed above all is sincere encouragement and interest from many researchers.

대한구강보건학회지의 위기

대한구강보건학회 편집이사
대한구강보건학회지는 1967년 창간하여 올해 42권을 발간하게 되는 역사적인 학술지이다. 또한 한국학술지인용색인(Korea Cita- tion Index)에서 검색할 수 있는 23종의 치의학 분야 학술지 중 영향력지수가 가장 높은 학술지이다. 기나긴 역사와 뛰어난 성과를 보이 고 있음에도 불구하고, 대한구강보건학회지는 올 해 출판하는 논문의 수를 채우기 어려울 정도의 운영난에 시달리고 있다. 이는 SCI나 SCOPUS 등의 국제적 데이터베이스에 수록되어 있는 학술지에 논문을 실어야 실적으로 인정받는 대학평가의 영향으로 보인다. 그러나 어떤 연구자든지 본인의 연구 실적을 더 많은 사람들과 공유하고 싶은 욕구가 있기 때문에, 국제학술지에 논문을 싣고자 하는 것은 당연 한 방향이라고 생각한다.
2018년 현재 한국연구재단 의약학 분야 등재학술지는 총 223종, 등재후보학술지는 총 48종이며 이 중 치의학분야 SCOPUS 등재지 는 4종이고 PubMed Central 등재지는 8종이다. SCOPUS 등재 치의학 학술지 4종 중 영문은 3종, 국영문 혼용이 1종인데, 대한구강보건 학회지는 영문 논문 투고가 가능한 국영문 혼용 학술지이긴 하나 대부분의 논문이 국문으로 출판되고 있다. 과학적인 논문작성이 영문으 로만 가능한 것도 아니고 국문으로 널리 읽힐 수 있는 연구결과를 출판하는 것이 필요하다는 주장도 일리가 있다.
대한구강보건학회지의 본연의 발간 취지를 살리고 보다 발전시키려면 구성원 모두의 노력이 필요한 시점이다. 이를 위해 여러 연구 자들의 애정 어린 격려와 관심이 그 무엇보다 절실하다.
