존경하는 국민 여러분,
700만 해외동포와 북한 동포 여러분, 그리고 독립유공자와 내외귀빈 여러분, 오늘 우리는 제96주년 3.1절을 맞아 3.1 독립운동의 숭고한 정신을 기리고자 이 자리에 모였습니다.
My fellow Koreans!
Seven million overseas Koreans and Northern brethren!
Independence fighters and distinguished guests from home and abroad!
On the 97 anniversary of the Independence Movement, we are gathered here today to pay tribute to the noble spirit of Independence Movement.
광복 70주년을 맞는 뜻 깊은 해에 조국의 독립을 위해 온 몸을 바치신
순국선열들의 희생과 애국지사와 독립유공자께 경의와 감사를 드립니다.
As we mark the 70th anniversary of Liberation, we salute and remember the fallen heroes and patriots and independence fighters, who have sacrificed themselves for the nation’s independence.
국민 여러분,
96년 전 오늘 우리는
민족의 자주독립, 인류평등과 세계평화의 대의(大義) 앞에 모두 하나가 되었습니다.
My fellow Koreans!
Ninety six years ago today, the nation came together in the just cause of the national independence,
2 equality of mankind and the world peace.
남녀노소·신분과 계층·종교와 사상의 차이를 뛰어 넘어 오직 독립을 향한 열망과 애국심으로 하나가 되었습니다.
3·1운동의 ‘자유를 향한 의지’와 ‘인류평화의 이상(理想)’은 임시정부 수립으로 이어졌고,
그 법통이 대한민국 헌법정신으로 계승되었습니다.
We banded together in patriotism and passion for independence regardless of gender, age, social status, faith and ideology. The Independence Movement represented by ‘the commitment to freedom,’ and ‘the ideal of peace of mankind’ gave rise to the establishment of the interim government and its lofty spirit came to be enshrined in the nation’s constitution.
민족 대단결의 3.1운동 정신은
우리 대한민국이 가난과 전쟁의 폐허 속에서도, 반세기만에 민주주의와 경제적 번영을 동시에 꽃피우는
‘기적의 역사’를 일구어 낸 밑거름이 되었습니다.
The spirit of Independence Movement, a rallying point for national unity, has helped the nation to weather the deprivation and the destruction in the wake of the Korean War and achieve both democracy and economic prosperity in half a century.
저는 이와 같은 우리 민족의 저력에 무한한 자긍심을 느끼며, 이 위대한 ‘성공의 역사’는
피와 땀과 눈물로 함께 하신 국민 여러분이 계셨기에 가능했다고 생각합니다.
I am immensely proud of this immeasurable strength of the people to get back up again. This great history of ours is a tribute to the sweat, blood, and tears of the people. ( We owe what we are today to the sacrifice of the people.)
존경하는 국민 여러분,
숱한 역경을 딛고 눈부신 성취를 이뤄낸 선대들의 헌신 위에 오늘 우리가 자유와 번영을 누리고 있듯이,
다가올 미래 세대들이 희망과 꿈을 이룰 수 있도록 만드는 것은 우리에게 주어진 책무입니다.

We are indebted to our forebears for our freedom and prosperity today. Now it is incumbent upon us to ensure that the generations yet unborn can see their dreams come true and hopes be fulfilled.
지금 우리는 미래로 도약하느냐, 이대로 정체하느냐의
갈림길에 서 있습니다. 글로벌 경제 침체와 추격형 성장전략의 한계에 직면해 있고, 과거부터 누적되어 온 적폐도 곳곳에서 드러나고 있습니다.
Right now, we are standing at a crossroads between taking off and falling behind. Global economic recession and catch-up growth strategy are starting to take their toll on the nation’s economy and the accumulated wrong practices are being laid bare here and there.
나라의 곳간도 여러 곳에서 문제가 발생하고 있습니다.
이러한 현실을 극복하기 위해서는 단기적인 처방과 해법으로는 안됩니다.
그것은 밑 빠진 독에 물을 붓는 것과 같습니다.
The nation’s coffers are showing signs of depletion. Short-term remedy and Band-Aid measures will not do. It is going to be like shoveling sand against the tide.
경제를 활성화하며
국민의 창의력과 독창성을 발휘해 새로운 가치를 창출하고, 그동안 누적되어 온 우리 사회의 적폐를 개혁하여
근본적인 경쟁력과 성장잠재력을 확충해야만 합니다.
Instead, we should revitalize the economy, create new values by enlisting our creativity and ingenuity.
By eliminating the social ills that have been left unresolved, we need to boost our national competitiveness and growth potential.
이것이 바로 정부가 창조경제 생태계 구축을 포함하여
‘경제혁신 3개년 계획’을 강력히 추진하고 있는 이유입니다.
지금 재정적자가 눈덩이처럼 쌓이고 있는 공무원 연금개혁은 물론 공공, 노동, 금융, 교육 등 4대 구조개혁과
규제혁파, 비정상의 정상화 등에 총력을 기울이고 있는 것도 바로 이런 이유 때문입니다.
That is why the government is pursuing the ‘three year plan for economic innovation,’ which includes establishment of an ecosystem for the creative economy. That is why the government is pushing ahead with the reform of government employees pension, whose deficit is snowballing. That is why the government is bent on reforming four major sectors, namely, public service, labor market, financial industry and education system. That is why we are focusing on deregulation and straightening out irregularities.
