ENERGY AND MINING
NEWS REPORT
Minister of Energy Andrés Rebolledo referred to the challenges for its Ministry to enforce the various commitments Chile has declared to face climate change. The Energy Policy 2050 imposes an ambitious goal: to incorporate at least 70% of renewable energy source in the energy matrix of Chile by the year 2050.
The regional leadership of Chile in these topics (energy and climate change) has been acknowledged, particularly because studies show that 75% of the national energy sector relies on fossil fuels and Chile is striving to reduce such figure.
In addition, the Government of Chile approved a tax reform in favor of sustainable development. From January 1st, 2017 activities and facilities responsible for 40% of the carbon emission in the electric sector will be affected. At the same time, further incentives are being delivered to firms that base their production on clean energy.
