A passively Q-switched, diode end pumped Nd:YVO

4

laser was developed. A Cr:YAG crystal was inserted in the cavity as a saturable absorber. The composite Nd:YVO

4

crystal had undoped YVO

4

crystal cap at each end of the crystal. Due to the undoped cap, the crystal showed stable output even at a pump diode power of 10 W. When the Cr:YAG crystal was inserted, the laser power decreased to one-third the power without the crystal. The pulse duration and the pulse repetition rate were measured, also. The pulse repetition rate ranged from 200 to 900 kHz, and it increased with increasing pump power. The peak power also increased with increasing pump power.

The fluctuations in the pulse repetition rate and the pulse duration were severe, so stable operation of the laser was needed.
