Basic information concerning Driving licenses issued in Georgia 1. Categories of the driving licenses issued in Georgia
Categories of the driving licenses issued in Georgia and the vehicles allowed for driving with the respective category are the following:
The holders of A Category driving license are allowed to drive without limitations:
Motorcycle with or without sidecar, tricycle, quadracycle, and other motorcycling vehicles.
A Category driving license can be issued to the person, who has reached the age of 18.
The holders of B Category driving license are allowed to drive:
a) Vehicles, with the total weight not exceeding 3500 kg, and with maximum 8 passenger seats (excluding the driver’s seat);
b) Transport composition of B Category moving vehicle and a trailer, if the total weight of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg;
c) Towing vehicle whose total weight exceeds 750 kg, but does not exceed the unladen weight of the moving vehicle, unless the weight of such composition exceeds 3560 kg.
B Category driving license can be issued to the person, who has reached the age of 18.
The holders of C Category driving license are allowed to drive:
a) Lorry vehicles whose total weight exceeds 3500 kg;
b) Transport composition of C Category moving vehicle and a trailer, if the total weight of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg.
Note: After one year since the issuance of C Category driving license, the holder of C Category driving license is allowed to transport maximum 8 passengers, excluding the driver, with lorry body.
C Category driving license can be issued to the person, who has reached the age of 18.
The holders of D Category driving license are allowed to drive:
a) Passenger vehicles, with passenger seats (excluding the driver’s seat) over 8 (excluding articulated buses);
b) Transport composition of D Category moving vehicle and a trailer, if the total weight of the trailer does not exceed 750 kg.
Note: After one year since the issuance of C Category driving license, the holder of D Category driving license is allowed to transport more than 8 passengers with appropriate lorry body.
D Category driving license can be issued to the person, who has reached the age of 21.
Military personnel serving military service term, who hold C or BC Category driving license and have one year experience of working with the vehicle, upon the recommendation of their superiors can be allowed to take an exam for the D Category driving license at the age of 19.
D Category driving license can be issued after one year of issuing B or C Category driving license.
The holders of E Category driving license are allowed to drive:
B, C or D Category transport composition, which the driver is allowed to drive, but which itself do not fall into one or all these categories.
The retrained drivers who have reached the age of 21 can take the exam for E Category driving license, but:
a) After one year of issuing C Category driving license;
b) After one year of issuing D Category driving license.
Note: The holder of DE Category driving license is allowed to drive an articulated bus in addition.
2. Documentation necessary for conversion of foreign licenses by the Georgian one
In order to change the driving license issued by the Republic of Korea with the Georgian one the citizen of the Republic of Korea shall submit to the Service Agency of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia the following documents:
a) a statement;
b) a translated version of the passport certified by the notary office or a residence permit;
c) a driving license issued by a foreign state;
d) a translated version of the driving license certified by the notary office;
e) a receipt certifying a payment of fees (the amount of fees is 15 GEL);.
f) a confirmation of the driving license (a confirmation of the driving license shall be apostilled and shall include the confirmation of the validity of the driving license issued by a foreign state or/and the fact that the right to drive is not suspended or terminated (deprived). In case, when a confirmation of the driving license or other document indicated above is issued by
the diplomatic representation, the document is subject to the consulate legalization in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia);
g) an address of the place of residence on the territory of Georgia (If a person does not have a place of registration or a place of temporary registration in Georgia, or if he/she is registered without the indication of an address, a place of registration of an eligible person registered on a certain address in Georgia, upon his/her written consent, can be indicated in the register as a place of residence of the concerned person).
In case of submission of the above-mentioned documents, the Korean driving license can be converted by the Georgian one according to the following principles:
Class 1 Ordinary – B Category Driving License Class 1 Special – B Category Driving License Class 2 Ordinary – B Category Driving License
If Korean side provides a more detailed description of the categories of driving licenses issued by Korean authorities, the equivalence of all categories of Korean and Georgian driving licenses can be determined.
3. The grounds of waiver of conversion of the driving licenses
A driving license issued by a foreign state will not be converted by the Georgian one, if:
a) the validity of a driving license submitted for conversion has expired;
b) there is a condition prescribed by the Georgian legislation, which prohibits a person from driving a vehicle at the time of his/her application;
c) Georgian legislation does not determine the equivalent category of the category indicated in the driving license issued by a foreign state;
d) the concerned person did not present all documents necessary for conversion of a driving license;
e) there are other circumstances determined by the Georgian legislation.
