Jules Gabriel Verne was a 19th century French novelist.

Verne was referred to as the father of science fiction, but he would disagree with the term and say that he was a writer of science-possible or soon-to-be-science facts.

He put a lot of research into all his novels and based them on the law of physics known during his time. Verne thought his inventions were not exactly impossible using contemporary engineering skills and knowledge.

In Jules Verne’s eyes, a science fiction writer was someone like HG Wells, who talked about time machines and invisible men. Jules Verne once told one of his interviewers, “Wells’ characters go to Mars in an airship made of a metal which defies gravity. It does not make sense!”

Science fiction writer or not, Jules Verne is still one of the best-loved authors in the world. He is also the second most translated author in the world behind Agatha Christie and ahead of William Shakespeare.

Everybody loves a good super-genius, especially one who can construct a super-powerful submarine. Nemo’s mastery of science and engineering—as shown by his diving suits and electricity guns, in addition to his submarine—is awesome. However, in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Nemo’s accomplishments set him apart from humanity in more than one way. He contributes to the advancement of technology and he is marked as a genius. But he is all alone because of his achievements.

His inventions are a century ahead of time and so is he, but he doesn’t belong in the world into which he was born.

Bollywood is the nickname for the Hindi language film industry, based in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, the second most populous state of the Republic of India. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema.

Bollywood is classified as the biggest movie industry in the world with regard to the amount of people employed and the number of films produced. In just 2011 alone, over 3.5 billion tickets were sold across the globe, which in comparison is one hundred million tickets more than Hollywood. Also, Bollywood makes about 1,041 films yearly, as opposed to less than 500 films made by Hollywood yearly.

The name “Bollywood” is a blend that came from Bombay and Hollywood. However, unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does not exist as a physical place. Some people feel sad for the name, arguing that it makes the industry look like a poor cousin to Hollywood.

As the United States pressured the Korean government for market, the “Motion Picture Law” was revised. It liberalized foreign film importation and permitted direct distribution for foreign film companies. These revisions had considerable impacts on the Korean film industry, which made the market share of domestic films decrease.

Moreover, the import restrictions on foreign films were lifted. Foreign film companies were also allowed to set up offices in Korea. For the first time, Korean films had to compete on equal terms with foreign productions.

However, . When the first foreign films were screened, demonstrations were staged by the Korean industry professionals. Korean newspapers refused to accept advertisements of newly-released foreign films. Non-poisonous snakes were even released in the aisles of theaters to scare the audiences away.

What comes to mind when you think of Chinese movies?

You may think of amazing martial arts like kung fu.

(A) , kung fu is a series of fighting styles, which have developed over a long historical period in China. Having a long tradition in China, kung fu appears in many Chinese movies. Let’s assume that we have found out a way to fast- forward the Sun through its evolution so that it becomes a cold sphere. What would happen on Earth?

First, when a communication satellite passes in front of the Sun, the Sun can block the satellite’s radio signal, causing an interruption in service. (A) D the Sun would solve this problem.

Second, time zones make trade more expensive. It’s harder to do business with someone if their office hours don’t (B) o with yours. However, if the Sun went out, it would get rid of the need for time zones, allowing us to give a boost to the global economy.

Finally, according to the North Dakota Department of Health, babies younger than six months should be kept out of the direct sunlight. If it were not for the Sun, our children would be (C) s .

Sophie was no ordinary house spider, but an artist.

She spun webs more wondrous than anyone had ever seen. Her playmates called her incredible. Someday, they said, she’s going to spin a masterpiece. When Sophie arrived at that age when a young spider must strike out on her own, she moved to Beekman’s Boardinghouse. The first thing she did was to look around. She saw faded rugs and old window shades.

The place cried out for her talents. Sophie began to weave a web of curtains for Beekman’s front parlor.

Day after day she whizzed along, blending a golden thread of sun into her silk. Then one day the landlady noticed her and screamed, “I’ll have no spiders in my parlor!” She swatted at Sophie with a dust rag. Sophie knew when she wasn’t wanted. She scampered across the wall and up the stairs into the tugboat captain’s closet. When she finally settled down, she looked around and saw nothing but gray. Gray shirts. Gray pants. Gray sweaters. (A) Sophie began to spin patiently as soon as she decided to make the captain a new suit.

A sleeve. A collar. One day the tugboat captain caught Sophie at work. He screeched, “A spider!” Then he climbed onto the windowsill and out to the roof. Sophie did not want anyone falling off the roof on her account.

She scuttled out of the closet, down the hall, and into the cook’s bedroom slipper.

Rosa Parks lived in Montgomery, a city in Alabama.

At that time, in the south of the United States, blacks weren’t allowed to go to the same restaurants or the same schools as whites. And on buses, blacks had to sit in the back whereas whites could sit in the front and in the middle. That was called segregation. One day on December 1st 1955, Rosa Parks was sitting on a bus on her way home. Then a white passenger boarded the bus, but all the seats were taken. He said, “Go to the back of the bus and give me your seat.” Rosa said, “I see no reason why I should give you my seat just because I’m black. I’m tired. I’m not going to move.”

The white passenger threatened to have her arrested. A police officer arrived and said, “Don’t make a fuss.

Leave your seat immediately or (A) we’ll have to arrest you.” “I won’t (B) r my rights. You can arrest me. I’m so tired of being treated like a second-class citizen for 42 years. I have been (C) d against. I don’t mind going to prison,” said Rosa.

Arachne’s work really was better than Athena’s.

Arachne said, “I am by far the best weaver. You gods think you are special. Well, you are not!” “It is true, you are the best weaver, but (A) . You need to be taught a lesson. From now on, you will only weave in the dark. No one will admire your work,”

snarled Athena. As Athena laughed out loud, Arachne felt a terrible pain run through her body. “What’s happening?” she cried. Everyone around her seemed to be getting bigger and bigger. Then she realized, no one was getting bigger. Now Athena’s laugh was so loud that Arachne tried to cover her ears – but her hands had gone! Instead she had eight long fingers, each covered in thick black hair. Athena had turned her into a spider! Arachne (B) . “Will I ever be able to weave again?” she wondered. When it got dark, Arachne scuttled up a wall and started to work. She wove all through the night, with her eight hairy fingers.
