Reservoir property evaluation using ichnology: a preliminary case study on Early Cretaceous Jinju Formation

Abstract

Trace fossils have been utilized as a paleobathymetric indicator, and for interpreting paleoenvironment that was inhabited by trace-makers, and refining sequence stratigraphy by locating significant disconformable boundaries. Ichnology, the study of trace fossils, has recently been applied to petroleum geology. Animal traces either enhance porosity and/or permeability of sediment layers, or reduce these properties. Such enhancement has been detected in the firmground where Glossifungites ichnofacies is present, which appears to have played an important role in manipulating drilling strategy. The Early Cretaceous Jinju Formation has been selected for an analog study to evaluate ichnological implication for porosity and permeability variation. Preliminary study on this lacustrine deposit indicates that three upward-fining sequences are present, identifiable trace fossils are abundant in fine-grained sandstone to siltstone layer in each sequence, and a possible omission surface is found in coarse-grained sandstone layer in the lowermost sequence.
