Criteria for siting nuclear power plants require that faults be characterized as to their potential for generating earthquakes or the absence of the potential for these occurrences be demonstrated. Since a trench survey was carried out at the central part of the Yangsan fault in early 1990's with reference to these issues, several Quaternary faults have been found in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. Although all these Quaternary faults may not be capable, because a part of these faults could be considered a capable fault, therefore, it is a very delicate matter, which need to be deal with carefully in assess- ing the seismic hazard.
Because of the low rate of seismicity and insufficient relationship between instrumental macro-seismicity and fault, it has been mainly used an age of faulting as criteria of capa- ble fault in Korea. In determining whether or not a faults are capable, it is not only the most important issue to interpret age of faulting but also not easy to obtain dating materi- al from the Quaternary deposits which is cut by a fault. There has been considerable de- bate among geologists and geophysicists as to the probability of occurrence of major events in the Yangsan fault system, southeastern Korean peninsula.
In this study, we discuss the criteria and probabilistic approaches that are used to as- sess whether or not a fault is seismogenic. And, we preliminarily also suggest the proba- bility of fault activity from the spatial association between faults and earthquake epi- centers, fault slip and tectonic stress, and geological evidence for multiple episodes of reactivation.
