Second-Order Circuit
To find the response of the second-order circuit,
Represent the circuit by a second-order differential equation.
Find the general solution of the homogeneous differential equation. This solution is the natural response, xn(t). The natural response will contain two unknown constants that will be evaluated later.
Find a particular solution of the differential equation. This solution is the forced response, xf(t).
Represent the response of the second-order circuit as x(t)=xn(t) + xf(t).
Use the initial conditions, for example, the initial values of the currents in
inductors and the voltage across capacitors, to evaluate the unknown constants.

A circuit with two irreducible energy elements can be represented by a second-order differential equation of the form

Critical damping provides the quickest approach to zero amplitude for a damped
oscillator. With less damping (underdamping) it reaches the zero position more quickly, but oscillates around it. With more damping (overdamping), the approach to zero is slower.
Critical damping occurs when the damping coefficient is equal to the undamped resonant
frequency of the oscillator.
