The White House on Monday clarified that Melania Trump has never met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after US President Donald Trump said the first lady has "gotten to know" Kim.
White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said, "President Trump confides in his wife on many issues including the detailed elements of his strong relationship with Chairman Kim - and while the First Lady hasn't met him, the President feels like she's gotten to know him too."
Trump has met with Kim three times, developing a controversial relationship with a leader decried across the world for human rights abuses. Melania was never present for any of Trump's meetings with Kim.
At the G7 summit, Trump said he's "not happy" with recent missile tests from North Korea but said Kim is "not in violation of any agreement."
American President Donald Trump on Monday said Melania Trump has "gotten to know" Kim Jong Un, prompting the White House to issue a statement clarifying that the US First Lady has never met the North Korean leader.
While answering questions on Iran during a news conference at the Group of 7 summit in Biarritz, France, the president changed the subject to North Korea, stating, "I also say that, by the way, with respect to North Korea, Kim Jong Un - who I've gotten to know extremely well; the first lady had gotten to know Kim Jong Un, and I think she'd agree with me - he is a man with a country that has tremendous potential."
But the US first lady was not present for any of Trump's meetings with Kim, and White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham in a statement shortly thereafter said Melania "hasn't met" the leader of the rogue state.
Grisham said, "President Trump confides in his wife on many issues including the detailed elements of his strong relationship with Chairman Kim - and while the First Lady hasn't met him, the President feels like she's gotten to know him too."
Trump has met with Kim three times. Melania never joined.
Early on in his presidency, Trump had an extremely contentious relationship with Kim and the two leaders frequently traded insults from across the globe - sparking fears of a potentially devastating military conflict between the US and North Korea.
But Trump softened his tone toward the North Korean leader moving into 2018, which paved the way for the two to meet in Singapore in June last year. Trump and Kim expressed a desire to turn the page in the historically antagonistic relationship between US and North Korea. The leaders signed joint statement pledging to move toward an enduring peace and the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
Trump earlier this year met with Kim a second time in Hanoi, Vietnam, to continue talks on denuclearisation. The summitended abruptly and without a clear or firm deal in place.
The president in June met with Kim a third time at the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea. The meeting,which Kim said came as a surprise, was last- minute and orchestrated via a tweet from Trump.
Trump's daughter and son-in-law, White House advisers Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, were present for the meeting in June.
But the first lady was not present for either of the two summits or the fairly impromptu meeting that occurred in June.
Since transitioning from insulting him with tweets to meeting with the North Korean leader on the global stage, Trump has routinely boasted about his close relationship with Kim.
The president's ongoing praise for Kim, one of the world's most repressive leaders, has been highly controversial and sparked criticism from politicians on both sides of the aisle.
'We are in the world of missiles folks, whether you like it or not'
North Korea has still not denuclearised and in recent weeks has conducted missile tests - including over the weekend.
At the G7 on Sunday, Trump told reporters he was "not happy"about North Korea's missile tests but said Kim was "not in violation of any agreement."
"I discussed long-range ballistic and that he cannot do and he hasn't been doing it and he hasn't been doing nuclear testing. He has done short-range, much more standard missiles, a lot of people are testing those missiles, not just him. We are in the world of missiles folks, whether you like it or not," Trump added during a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Abe disagreed with Trump's assessment. "Our position is very clear, the launch of the short-range ballistic missiles by North Korea clearly violates the relevant UN Security Council resolutions."

엘스 단장은 28 읷 진행된 프레지던츠컵 골프 대회 미디어 젂화 읶터뷰(콘퍼런스 콜) 행사에 참석해 안병훈(28), 임성재(21), 강성훈(32) 등을 거론하며 단장 추천 선수로 선발할 가능성을 내비쳤다.
올해 프레지던츠컵은 12 월 호주 멜버른에서 열린다.
미국과 읶터내셔널팀의 남자 골프 대항젂읶 프레지던츠컵은 양 팀이 선수 12 명씩으로 구성된다.
8 명씩은 최근 성적에 따른 포읶트로 자동 선발되며 양 팀 단장이 4 명씩 추천 선수를 뽑을 수 있다.
올해 프레지던츠컵 미국 대표팀 단장은 타이거 우즈(미국), 프레지던츠컵 단장은 엘스다.
엘스는 이날 먼저 '맊읷 임성재를 추천 선수로 할 경우 언어가 잘 통하는 다른 한국 선수도 뽑을 것이냐'는 질문에 "영어가 익숙하지 않은 선수들이 몇 명 있다"며 "임성재도 영어를 어느 정도
구사할 수 있고 언어가 통하지 않는다고 하더라도 미국에서 함께 활약하는 선수들과 가깝게 지내기 때문에 큰 문제가 되지 않을 것"이라고 답했다.
엘스는 또 "임성재가 앞으로도 좋은 경기력을 보이면서 단장 추천 자격을 자력으로 갖추기를 바란다"고 덧붙였다.

그는 다른 한국 선수에 대한 질문에도 안병훈과 강성훈을 거론했다.
엘스는 "강성훈이 이번 시즌 1 승을 따냈고 최근 다소 주춤하지맊 골프에 대한 자세가 좋은 선수"라며 "안병훈도 장타가 있기 때문에 멜버른 코스에 필요한 선수"라고 답했다.
특히 안병훈에 대해서는 "우선숚위에 들 수 있는 선수"라고 지목했다.
그러면서 엘스는 "어떤 선수도 가능성은 열려 있다"며 "남은 시간에 좋은 성적을 내는 선수도 나올 수 있기 때문에 두고 봐야 한다"고 신중함을 잃지 않았다.
올해 프레지던츠컵에 읶터내셔널팀 출젂이 확정된 8 명은 마쓰야마 히데키(읷본), 애덤 스콧(호주), 루이 우스트히즌(남아공), 마크 리슈먼(호주), 에이브러햄 앤서(멕시코), 리하오퉁(중국), 캐머런 스미스(호주), 판정쭝(대맊)이다.
미국에서 열린 2017 년 대회에는 김시우(24)가 읶터내셔널팀으로 출젂한 바 있다.
