OCCURRENCE OF KOLYMOPORA IN THE XIAZHEN FORMATION AT ZHUZHAI, YUSHAN, SOUTHEAST CHINA

Abstract

Kolymopora Preobrazhenskiy, 1964 are for the first time reported from the Upper Ordovician Xiazhen Formation at Zhuzhai, Yushan, Southeast China. The Xiazhen Formation cropped out in Zhuzhai consists of a variety of carbonate-siliciclastic lithofacies representing a shallow-water platform environments. Corals are dominant components of the fossil assemblages in the Formation. Three species of Kolymopora were recognized from the uppermost horizon in Upper Member of the Xiazhen Formation at Zhuzhai. Species of Kolymopora shows high endemicity in Southeast China.

Kolymopora is a genus of Pachyporid tabulate coral forming branching cerioid

coralla with thick peripheral zone, recorded from Northeast Russia and China. This

genus has a restricted stratigraphic range within the Ashigillian and therefore is a

useful guide fossil to identify the Ordovician System in this region. Kolymopora is

considered to be the primitive stock of the Pachyporids. Early representatives of

the Pachyporids persisted in this region until the Lower Silurian, at which point it

spread and flourished through Southeast Asia, the Urals and the Baltic region,

Australia until became extinct at the end of Permian.
