THE EFFECTS of the strike by members of the National Taxi Alliance yesterday were felt in most parts of Tshwane.
Highways and roads were blocked, and there were reports of violence and hijacking.
Motorists and commuters were left stranded and unable to get to work or schools.
The Department of Basic Education urged parents to trust the contingency plans put in place in Gauteng to mitigate the impact of the national strike.
Minister Angie Motshekga said they had been well aware of the strike and put in place the necessary measures to ensure pupils were given every opportunity to make it to exam centres.
The A Re Yeng bus rapid transit service had to be withdrawn early in the morning after a bus was hijacked, allegedly by striking taxi operators, in Orchards.
MMC for Roads and Transport Dikeledi Selowa said that after a careful assessment, it was decided to suspend the bus services as the strike had been characterised by violence,
intimidation and threats directed at drivers and commuters. The service was expected to resume today.
According to the City, a female bus driver was held captive by a group. She was then released. Another driver was assaulted in front of the C De Wet depot. “Halting the service was a very difficult decision to take…
“However, we had to take into consideration the safety of our drivers as well as that of our valued commuters, and the protection of our assets.”
In a video online taken by a commuter, taxi drivers could be heard demanding that passengers get off the bus. But they had urged a pupil to remain on it to be taken to school.
Another victim of the violence was Petrie Vogel, the National Press Club secretary, who was attacked while driving in Waterkloof Ridge after dropping her child off at Hoërskool
Menlopark.
Taxi drivers who were blocking Eridanus Road threatened her, jumped on her car and tried to get into the car.
In video footage, a man, identified by the local community as a taxi marshal, can be seen smashing her windscreen with a truncheon as she sits trapped in her car.
She was unhurt but traumatised. Reports emerged on social media of others who were also victims of violence.
“This type of unprovoked attack on ordinary citizens during a protest is unacceptable and we urge the police to take steps to identify and arrest the perpetrators,” National Press Club chairperson Val Boje said.
Residents of Mamelodi said most could not make it to work. Some said they were shocked at the timing of the strike, considering that pupils were writing exams.
In the eastern region of the city, Grade 11 and Grade 12 pupils driving with their parents on Lynnwood Road were subjected to intimidation while on their way to school.
“Learners who were going to write exams were subjected to intimidation in their parent’s cars, and some couldn’t get to school to write exams,” ward councillor Siobhan Muller said.
At Denneboom taxi rank in the morning commuters were standing around helplessly, not knowing how they would get to work.
Right in front of them were taxi drivers sitting inside their vehicles, waiting to leave to join their colleagues in the CBD for the march.
Sello Maluleka, who works as a hairdresser in Silverton, said he was already counting his income loss.
“I had a client’s appointment at 9am, but could not make it. My daughter had called me about this (the strike) the previous night, but I didn’t believe her.”
Thabang Monyamane was able to get a lift from Phomolong to Mamelodi West, only to find there were no taxis at the rank.
“Our jobs are on the line. These people are really unfair. People have lost jobs in the pandemic; we cannot risk more now.”
Tshwane Metro Police Department officers had their hands full from early in the morning as taxi drivers blocked roads leading into the inner city.
Roads in Mamelodi, Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa were blocked, but the officers dealt with the situation, department spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.
Call for an end to the death penalty

SEOUL: South Korea for the first time voted in favour of a UN resolution calling for the suspension of the death penalty, the justice ministry said yesterday.
The resolution at the UN Third Committee, which oversees humanitarian issues, expresses concern about the continued execution of the death penalty and calls for gradually limiting its execution, in addition to declaring a moratorium with its eventual abolition in mind, Yonhap news agency reported.
South Korea last executed the death penalty in 1997.

Pastor and wife turn themselves in to Malawian police, ‘seeking justice not refuge’

His spokesperson has asserted that the widespread media reports alleging that he was arrested at home were untrue.
“He handed himself over to the police in the morning, as per his promises last week that he is not seeking refuge in Malawi, but rather justice.
“Reports that he was arrested at his home last night or this morning are false. He handed himself in together with Mom (Mary Bushiri) in the morning,” said his spokesperson Maynard Manyowa.
Manyowa said the Bushiris and their legal teams were still liaising with the police in Malawi.
“As South Africa formally requested that he be sent back, he will have to appear in court. It’s just how the process will work. He fully intends to return to South Africa.”
The North Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, has issued a second warrant for their arrests.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the second warrant pertained to the fraud and money-laundering case on which the couple were released on R100 000 bail each by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
The couple have a trial scheduled for May 31 to June 18 next year on charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to more than R15 million. This follows their arrest on February 1 last year by the Hawks.
The pastor and his wife were at the time released on bail by the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. Their case was transferred to the high court.
The couple are also accused of contravening South Africa’s exchange control regulations by paying about R19 million in cash for a 1984 Gulfstream jet.
The Hawks’ case against the pair concerns alleged offences of fraud‚ money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
“At the time of their disappearance, Mr and Ms Bushiri had posted bail of R100 000 each and were required to regularly present themselves to authorities as part of complying with their bail conditions. They were due to report in court in January 2021,” said Mogale.
During the court proceedings on Tuesday, the matter was postponed to December 7 for the formal withdrawal of bail and forfeiture of the bail deposit.
South Africa has initiated legal proceedings to secure the extradition of the Bushiris, after the charismatic preacher announced that he had left South Africa despite the bail conditions barring him from travelling.
In a statement and later a televised address beamed by privately owned television station Zodiak Broadcasting, Bushiri made five demands as a condition for him to return to South Africa for trial.
“I arrived in Malawi on Wednesday, and my president (Lazarus Chakwera) left for South Africa the following day. I have not met my government. I have not spoken to any government official. I will meet my government on Monday.”
Bushiri said he was not running away from his trial, but that he wanted to involve his native government in his concerns surrounding his criminal cases in South Africa.
“I am not running away (from trial). That is why I am here announcing that I am in Malawi.
If you are running, you do not disclose where you are.
“I am also going to subject myself to the Malawian police, I am going to present myself to them.”
The church leader and his wife are also facing charges of theft, money laundering and fraud in connection with an alleged R100m investment scheme.
For that case, they were each released on R200 000 bail at the Pretoria Central Magistrate’s Court on November 4, following their arrest in October.

Former president Jacob Zuma accuses state capture commission chair Raymond Zondo of being ‘less than candid’ about their friendship, claiming the two even discussed if this
friendship will have an impact on the judge’s career – stopping Zondo’s ruling on his recusal in its tracks yesterday.
I understand that in referring to me as ‘only an MEC’, the chairperson is attempting to downplay my role.
Former president Jacob Zuma has launched another salvo in Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s direction, challenging his Monday statement the two were never friends and
accusing him of cherry-picking his disclosures.
In an affidavit submitted to the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture yesterday – and as part of his application for Zondo to recuse himself as chair – Zuma insisted the two had shared a close relationship.
And he claimed that Zondo’s romance with one of Zuma’s now sisters-in-law in the 1990s – together with the child it had produced – had only made this relationship “even closer and family in nature”.
Zuma also noted it was a “trite principal of law” a judge could not sit in his own case and by placing his statement on record, Zondo had opened himself up to becoming a judge “in the determination of factual disputes relating to his own statement”.
A ruling on Zuma’s application for Zondo’s recusal had been expected yesterday but his affidavit threw a spanner in the works, leaving the application’s fate – and potentially that of the commission – up in the air for another day.
The commission issued a statement yesterday afternoon saying Zondo needed more time to consider the affidavit. A ruling is, however, expected today.
In the meantime, it is clear that Zuma is not backing down.
In his recusal application, he described his relationship with Zondo as a “relatively close” and
“personal” and claimed they had “constantly met on social occasions and [at] public gatherings that were organised by the government” as well as that Zondo had visited his house “on several occasions”.
He even said after Zondo had been appointed as a judge, the two had discussed whether or not their relationship would jeopardise his career.
But in his statement on Monday, Zondo painted a very different picture of the situation.
He said he had never been to Zuma’s official residence and denied having discussed whether their relationship would jeopardise his career after being elevated to the bench, saying Zuma was at the time not president “and only an MEC” – so could not have influenced his career in any case.
In the affidavit submitted yesterday, Zuma wasn’t budging and highlighted a briefing meeting he said they had at his official residence in Durban after the deputy chief justice was
appointed as chair of the commission.
He was also unwavering on their alleged discussion about the potential impact of their relationship on Zondo’s career as a judge and said this had taken place at his Forest Town home in Johannesburg – which Zondo has admitted to having visited but only on two occasions.
“I understand that in referring to me as ‘only an MEC’, the chairperson is attempting to downplay my role in order to demonstrate that he couldn’t have relied on me for his ascendancy,” Zuma said.
“It is common cause that at the time I was also national chairperson of the ANC and the provincial chairperson of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal. These were indeed positions of
influence in the ANC. Accordingly, his attempt to communicate that I was insignificant in the national political arena is untrue.”
He accused Zondo of being “less than candid” and said he could not deny this discussion, adding further the deputy chief justice had been “selective” with what he chose to put on the record and pointing to the fact that he had not mentioned his familial ties to the former president on Monday. This despite the fact that he did confirm as much in a previous statement.
Zuma fi led his recusal application – which evidence leader and advocate Paul Pretorius has argued would mean “the collapse” of the commission if successful – last week, after Zondo ordered he be subpoenaed to appear before him.
Zuma last year appeared for five days before withdrawing his cooperation. He eventually capitulated but was then a no-show at subsequent scheduled appearances – with his lawyers blaming his ill-health, saying he was busy preparing for his upcoming criminal trial in KwaZulu-Natal.
He was present during Monday’s and Tuesday’s sitting, but not during yesterday’s, due to a death in the family.

(요하네스버그=연합뉴스) 김성진 특파원 = 아프리카 내 가장 큰 소비시장인 남아프리카공화국에 부는 K(한국산)-소비재 바람이 예사롭지 않다.
19 일 코트라(KOTRA) 아프리카지역본부(본부장 손병일)에 따르면 이곳의 한류는 넷플릭스와 사회관계망서비스(SNS)를 통해 세계와 연결되는 아프리카 소비자들을 중심으로 K-뷰티, 먹방 등 한국의 소비문화로부터 시작되는
모양새다.
작년 남아공 최대 패션 온라인몰인 슈퍼발리스트(Superbalist.com)가
코트라(KOTRA)의 지원으로 토니모리 등 한국 화장품 8 개 브랜드를 남아공 내 최초로 론칭한 이후, 이제는 남아공 대형 드럭스토어(약국)에서도 한국산 마스크팩을 손쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다.
그런가 하면 어느샌가 한국 화장품만 전문으로 취급하는 온라인 스토어도 우후죽순으로 생겨났다.
슈퍼발리스트는 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나 19)으로 인한
록다운(봉쇄령) 기간 중 한국 화장품의 재고가 부족해 몰려드는 주문을 다 소화하지 못했다면서, 올해 한국 화장품 수입오더 물량을 작년 대비 2 배 넘게 확대했다고 한다.
실제로 9 월 기준 남아공 전체 수입시장은 전년 대비 26% 위축된 반면 같은 기간 한국의 대(對)남아공 화장품 수출액은 37% 가까이 늘어나는 등 K-뷰티의 성장세가 주목된다.
그동안 중국계 등 아시아인 시장 중심으로 소비되던 한국 식품도 최근 SNS 를 통해 입소문을 타면서 인종을 가리지 않고 점진적으로 확산되는 양상이다.
주말이면 경제중심 요하네스버그와 수도 프리토리아의 한국 식품점에
교민보다 현지인으로 더욱 붐비고, 아프리카 소비자들의 SNS 에서 매운라면 챌린지(Spicy Noodle Challenge)와 먹방(Mukbang)은 더 이상 낯선 단어가 아니다.
지난 약 10 년간 한국에 갔다가 남아공에 돌아와 있는 영어교사가 무려 1 만명이 넘는다고도 하는데, 한류를 현지에서 직접 경험한 그들이 아프리카 한류의 촉매가 되고 있다는 흥미로운 분석도 나온다.
한국에서 꼬박 하루 비행기를 타야 겨우 닿을 수 있는 지구 반대편 멀고 먼 아프리카이고 그중에서도 가장 남쪽 끝 남아공이지만, 한 다리 건너 한국에 몇 년간 영어교사로 다녀온 사람을 만나는 게 전혀 어렵지 않다는 것이다.
KOTRA 요하네스버그무역관의 임수주 차장은 이 같은 설명과 함께 "최근 100 만명이 넘는 팔로워를 거느린 남아공 인플루언서가 불닭볶음 라면과 스낵 등 한국 식품을 체험하고 올린 포스팅에 보인 팔로워들의 반응에 놀랐다"면서
"서로 소주와 김밥을 추천하는가 하면, 웬만한 라면은 다들 먹어본 것 같이 얘기하더라"고 전했다.
사실 그간 아프리카는 인프라 부족과 빈번한 분실 사고 등 문제가 반복되면서 오프라인 시장 규모에 비해 온라인 시장이 크게 성장하지 못했다.
그러나 올해 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나 19)으로 인해 어쩔 수 없는 비대면 상황과 강력한 록다운(봉쇄령)이 전개되면서 온라인 시장이
폭발적으로 커지고 있다.
이에 따라 코트라 아프리카지역본부는 주남아공한국대사관(대사 박종대)과 함께 K-소비재 바람을 더 거세게 하기 위해 '2020 년 아프리카 온라인 소비재 수출대전'을 개최하고 있다.
이미 지난 16 일부터 온라인상에서는 '클릭코리아'라는 별칭으로 시작해 현지 블랙프라이데이(27 일)를 거쳐 29 일까지 대대적인 판촉전을 벌인다.
남아공 현지 온라인몰 20 개가 협업해 K-뷰티, 푸드, 라이프스타일 등을 테마로 총 250 여종의 한국 소비재 제품을 선보인다.
또 판촉전 기간 중 남아공 최대 온라인 마켓플레이스인
테이커랏(Takealot.com)에는 K-소비재 테마관을 개설하고, 요하네스버그 유명 쇼핑몰인 샌튼시티몰에는 19 일 팝업홍보관을 설치하는 등 소비자를
대상으로 전방위 공략에 나선다.
이번 행사를 계기로 강원 여성위생용품 제조기업 '엠뷰글로벌'은 남아공 취약계층 여성 대상으로 생리대 40 만 장, 마스크 10 만 장을 기부해 의미를 더했다.
