There is a mysterious sea route that appears and disappears twice a day. It is the route that leads to ‘Mokseom Island,’ located in Seonjae-ri, Yeongheung-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. Mokseom Island is a small roundish island visible to the left as soon as you cross Seonjaedaegyo Bridge. It is a small uninhabited island floating alone on the sea in ordinary times, but it reveals a secret route when the water subsides. The sea splits twice a day according to the come and go of the tides and reveals the sandy passage like a golden carpet. The view of the sea route revealing itself slowly arouses admiration.

The sea route connecting Seonjaedo Island to Mokseom Island is a solid route made of sand and pebbles and it forms a mound. When the hidden route appears, you can walk to Mokseom Island. Enjoy the seascape on each side of the route and take a leisurely walk and you will arrive at Mokseom Island in no time. It will take less than ten minutes to take a look around Mokseom Island. You can walk around along the beach or in the small forest inside the island.

There are other programs, such as picking clams and experiencing the mudflat that appears around the island during low tides.

Gureopdo Island, which is referred to as the Galapagos Islands of Korea, is the most untainted island among the islands of Incheon and is praised as a must-see destination. You can observe pearl millet and wild deer and the beautiful Milky Way in the summer night as there are not many lights in the vicinity. It boasts an attractive landscape as it was selected as the most beautiful forest in the ‘National Beautiful Forest Contest.’ For this, Gureopdo Island is called the Holy Land for Backpackers. This island is also home to Nanggaemeori Ridgeway. This trail leads to the two viewpoints of Nanggaemeori and Deongmulsan. First, in the view from Nanggaemeori, the geometrically-shaped vertical cliff presents a grand sight with the waves, and hawks, which are designated as natural monuments, can be found around Maebawi near the hill. At Deongmulsan, you can see many islands on the sea and the broad hill and endless meadows running up to Nanggaemeori, creating a magnificent spectacle along with the sea.

Yeongheungdo is the only island that you can reach without taking a boat in Ongjin-gun. Prince Ingnyeonggun or Wang Gi, a descendant of Goryeo’s royal family, fled and settled here after the fall of the Goryeo Dynasty. ‘Yeong’ from Yeongheungdo Island came from ‘Ingnyeonggun.’ This shows where the name of ‘Yeongheung Ingnyeonggun Gil,’ the trekking course that leads to everywhere in Yeongheungdo Island and Seonjaedo Island, came from. There are 17 courses based on various themes, such as ‘Yeombeot Naru Gil,’ showing the brilliant past of Yeongheungdo Island and ‘Aehyang Gamakkae Gil,’ which reflects the displaced people’s yearning for their hometown.

Among the various trails of Yeongheung Ingnyeonggun Gil, there is a course that offers unique scenery. It is called Simnipo Summaru Gil. Simnipo Beach is known for its clean sea and fine sand beach that combine to create beautiful scenery. The Korean hornbeam colony adds charms to the place. It is an artificial forest made 150 years ago to tone down the sea winds. There is a space to rest in the shade on the edge of the forest.

Simnipo Coastal Walkway runs along the forest for visitors to enjoy a walk with the cool breeze, enjoying the beach and a time for relaxation and healing.

The waters around Daeijakdo Island are designated as a marine ecosystem protection area due to its excellent natural landscape that include sand flats and rocky coast, as well as having preservation values for distinctive topography, such as the grassy sandbank. The trail for coastal visits was constructed to show the scenery of the marine protection area within the extent that does not damage this marine ecosystem and to introduce its excellence.

A pavilion and resting area were placed to observe the ecosystem and topography more closely. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful view of the coast at the observation platforms.

These trails are located across Daeijakdo Island for visitors to enjoy beautiful scenery. The first trail that visitors can find is the one beside the dock. It leads to a course that goes around the island’s edges and back to the dock. It takes about 20 minutes. The blue waves rise and fall on one side of the wooden deck and refreshing trees give shades on the other side. There are full-fledged trekking courses to enjoy the various charms of the island.

The geological park not only preserves geology but also links it with

education and tourism. It reflects both concepts: preservation and utilization.

Baengnyeong Daecheong Geological Park also operates various educational and experiential programs. First, the park offers the commentary program.

The residents of Baengnyeongdo, Daecheongdo, and Socheongdo Islands who completed required training will describe the history, culture, ecology, and environment about the islands.

There are ten commentators you can book through the homepage. The park also offers experiential programs and special programs of drawing a geological map for high school students who want to major in geology and topography related subjects in the college and teachers in relevant fields.

Also, trekking courses are available and various services are provided in cooperation with the residents.

BaBaengnyeongdo Island, Daecheongdo Island, and Socheongdo Island, where you can observe and study the geological environment around a billion years ago, were created through the metamorphosis of sedimentary rocks, generated in the coast under the influence of high and low tides. These are the valuable spaces that can investigate the geological history of the Proterozoic Era and clearly show the sedimentary structure and shape. Incheon launched a program in 2017 to certify major geological heritages as national geological parks and preserve and use them for tourism. Ten geological attractions were selected as of 2019.

‘Dumujin,’ Baengnyeong Daecheong National Geological Park, vividly reveals the wave pattern, ‘Okjukpo Coastal Dune,’ which is referred to as Sahara of Korea, and pale ‘Bun Bawi,’ which contains stromatolite fossils. These places offer the landscape that can’t be found elsewhere.

Baengnyeong-myeon (Baengnyeongdo Island) and Daecheong-myeon (Daecheongdo Island and Socheongdo Island) are national geological parks. They offer a chance to clearly observe the passage of time through nature and have the geological uniqueness that only they can have.

PromotIng ‘envIronment-frIendly three no’s camPaIgn’

Recently, trash cans have disappeared at Incheon City Hall. Disposable products, wasted resources, and food wastes are disappearing from public institutions in Incheon in the new year. This movement is called the

‘Environment-friendly City Hall Three No’s Campaign.’ This follows the ‘Environment- friendly Resource Circulating City Hall Development Agreement’ entered by Incheon, ten counties and boroughs, and six public corporations and industrial complexes in Incheon. First, the use of disposable products is entirely prohibited inside public offices including Incheon City Hall. This also applies to meetings and events. The stores inside City Hall may not provide or sell disposable products. Also, trash cans will be removed and recycling bins will be installed and managed to recycle resources. Those who use cafeterias inside participating public institutions are encouraged to take small portions and process leftovers with the RFID-based food waste clearing process system, which charges users for processing their food waste by weight to reduce food waste.

Incheon signed and implemented an MOU for ‘Creating Funeral Culture without Disposable Products’ with five general hospitals including Incheon Medical Center within the jurisdiction and the Incheon Federation for Environmental Movement. From 2022, funeral agencies and private funeral homes will also join the campaign.

Last year, Incheon had the ‘Declaration of Independence from Waste.’ This year, Incheon presented a proposition, ‘Future of Environment-friendly Resource Circulation,’

to the world. Incheon is diligently making its way into the environment-friendly future with the ‘Incheon Green New Deal’ policy.

First, the policy intends to reduce carbon emissions in all sectors, including economy and life, in Incheon. Then, Incheon will switch from fossil fuels to new renewable energy such as offshore wind power, solar energy, and hydrogen as main energy sources while increasing carbon sinks significantly. Incheon will also make efforts to resolve marine waste and microplastic issues so that the sea and mudflats can function as they are naturally expected to.

It has already been over a year since COVID-19 has shaken everyday life and the world.

COVID-19 also put a brake on the movement to refrain from using disposables in response to environmental concerns. From boxes to fillings for packages, and

disposable containers, wastes from various disposables are piling up.

‘Incheon

Green new Deal’

StartS

From this year, Incheon is taking the initiative in substantially implementing the ‘Incheon Green New Deal’ project that includes carbon neutrality and the supply of renewable energy.

Incheon made ‘Creating a low-carbon, green economy, and green life city’ the key objective for the environmental sector in 2021 to promote a variety of strategic projects. First, Incheon will fully implement the Incheon Green New Deal project, which will cost 5.6 trillion won from this year until 2025.

Carbon-neutral and Renewable Energy

Last year, Incheon announced the Incheon Green New Deal promotion plan, which intends to increase the use of renewable energies and promote the resource circulation system by closing metropolitan landfills. Incheon will put spurs to the early decommissioning of Yeongheung Units 1 and 2 as it joined the ‘Power Plant Coal Alliance (PPCA)’

this year, establish a master plan for the Incheon New Deal project for carrying out the Carbon Neutrality Goals for 2050, expand supply of electric and hydrogen vehicles, and create an alternative for landfills to close the metropolitan landfill by 2025.

Yeongheung Thermal Power Station has been operated by Korea South-East Power since 2004 and is responsible for 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Incheon. Incheon

energy

decided to push forward with the early decommissioning of Yeongheung Units 1 and 2 in accordance with the central government’s carbon neutrality keynote for 2050.

Incheon will also launch the ‘Environmental Capital Steering Group (provisional title)’ to expedite the carbon- neutrality policy by improving the marine environment and search for ways to support the Offshore Wind Park, which is currently being carried out by large power companies in the coasts of Incheon.

In addition, Incheon will improve indoor air quality in facilities for vulnerable social groups, such as daycare centers and elderly nursing homes, intensify the management of hazardous chemicals safety, establish district resource circulation centers (incineration plants), and establish an integrated management system for the ecology and environment at the estuary of Hangang (Riv.).

Incheon will install 1,114 air ventilating and heating systems this year mainly around facilities for vulnerable social groups, and create the Hangang Estuary Ecology and Environment Integrated Management and Non- contact Center, in which 39 organizations including central and local governments, academic circles, and private organizations participate in.

Meanwhile, an Incheon official said, “We will devote all our capacities to become the Environmental Capital, such as finding various projects that we can do in Incheon in line with the keynote of the central government’s Green New Deal Policy.”

The Korean government has set up a plan to overcome the crisis resulting from low-growth, polarization, and COVID-19 and lead the global economy by promoting the ‘Korean New Deals,’ such as Digital, Green, and Human New Deals.

In line with the central government’s effort, Incheon has also promoted the

‘Incheon New Deal’ to resolve urban issues of Incheon and to create future opportunities, while announcing a master plan together with citizens and experts in October of last year. The ‘Incheon New Deal’ added the bio industry, which is the strength of Incheon, and is promoted as Digital, Green, Bio, and Human New Deals with emphasis on resolving pending issues, such as the resolution of problems related to metropolitan landfills and the improvement of economic structure centered on manufacturing industry. It will also continuously create future opportunities of Incheon by attracting the Bio Process HR Fostering Center, designating Incheon as a Smart Tourist City, and commissioning major reconstruction projects for industrial complexes while focusing on creating jobs and intensifying an employment network.

Lucky Guy, Martin

Came to Study and Found Lifelong Partner

SImIlar yet dIffereNt.

that’S why they are a couple

Martin’s wife, Soo-yeon, was an exchange student in Norway back in 2012. Through a friend she made then, she was introduced to Martin, who came to Korea as an exchange student in 2013.

They became lovers when Soo-yeon helped Martin, who was having a hard time adapting to life in Korea. The couple finally tied the knot.

One went to Norway, and the other came to Korea from Norway. As if they were meant for each other, Martin and Soo-yeon wondered about and chose each other’s country out of curiosity.

Even the reason for choosing each other’s country is similar. Soo-yeon majored in journalism at university and selected Norway because she wanted to experience a unique culture that might help with her career. Martin also wanted to experience an exotic Asian culture different from the European culture that is about the same as Norway. Korea, the only divided nation in the world, was of interest to Martin who thereby chose the country to learn more about it.

When you think about it, the chances of a couple visiting each other’s countries as exchange students are quite rare. This could have been the reason they were more attracted to each other.

After continuing the long-distance relationship for a long time, they registered their marriage in 2017 when Martin came to Korea and became an official couple by having a wedding in 2018.

Mr. Martin Bjerkmo

Martin Bjerkmo (“Martin”),

who comes from a faraway place in Norway in Northern Europe, calls himself a ‘Lucky Guy.’ That’s because he met his wife, Soo-yeon Jeon (“Soo-yeon”) when he came to study in Korea who he made a happy family with.

Officially, he came to Korea in August 2017, but he had already visited Korea as an exchange student back in 2013. He met Soo-yeon then, and luckily, continued the relationship until they finally married a few years ago. They are now enjoying a sweet honeymoon life.

Let’s listen to the life story of a handsome husband and a beautiful wife.

reaSSured (?) lIfe away from home

Martin lives in Korea, a foreign country to him, but he is not afraid. His wife is Korean and he can ask her anything anytime. But for his colleagues, living away from home is not that easy.

Martin works at the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which is an international organization. He often hears about the difficulty of living abroad from his peers who are also foreigners. One of the things that make it difficult is that there is no information in English, especially leaflets about tourist attractions and restaurants, even though Songdo is an international city. Apartment announcements are only provided in Korean and not in English, that they have difficulties understanding Martin and his wife, Soo-yeon

information about recycling and other apartment- related information. Martin asked the apartment management to make announcements in English as well, and it went through.

Songdo is a smart city with many parks and green such as Central Park and a variety of convenience facilities. Still, there is a huge language barrier, and Martin says this requires a solution.

He says that he should learn Korean since he lives in Korea but it is not easy to master Korean. Martin also attended the Korean language class offered by IFEZ for one semester. Later, the school switched to contact-free online lectures due to the prevalence of COVID-19, which slowed down the learning process.

Also, since he mainly speaks in English at home and work, his Korean skill is still at a beginner’s level. He says he will strive to concentrate on Korean this year.

liFe FaiThFUl To The PresenT

We asked Martin about his plans for the future.

Martin said he is satisfied with his life now and wishes to enjoy the present. However, Martin wishes to return home to Norway when the COVID-19 situation improves. Martin has not visited his hometown for two years and he missed it so much so that he became homesick last Christmas.

Because his homeland, Christmas is hugely celebrated in Norway due to its proximity to Finland, the home of Santa Claus, Martin says he thought about his hometown a lot during the Christmas season.

Martin hopes that he will have a chance to visit Norway around Easter as circumstances are improving around the world with the supply of vaccines for COVID-19.

Soo-yeon lived in Songdo for a year. She says she likes it here because it is quiet and peaceful and she wants to live here staying healthy. They live with their pet Bobby that they adopted from an abandoned dog protection center near the airport, but she said they do have plans to add another member of the family.

The couple must enjoy every moment wherever they are, but they think about returning to Norway, which is Martin’s home. Because Martin misses nature at home, Soo-yeon promised to go to Norway with him although no one knows when that will be.

Source: Martin Bjerkmo They live in Songdo with their pet, Bobby,

a year-old dog that they adopted from an abandoned dog protection center near the airport.

It was interesting to see how calm and serious the couple was, unlike the young people of today, throughout the interview.

We hope this couple, who continued their relationship beyond borders, leads a great life as now wherever they live in the future.

Songdo has an excellent environment for riding bicycle. Bicycle roads are everywhere, including Central Park, Haedoji (Sunrise) Park, and Penta Park. Sidewalks and bike trails are divided for safe riding. You can enjoy various activities at attractions you can reach by bike and also the scenery of the park that changes colorfully in each season and the refined and brilliant image of the city, making the trip in Songdo more interesting. Bicycle related facilities such as bicycle rental shops, bicycle racks, and pumps can be found easily along the bicycle roads for better convenience.

You can rent an ordinary bicycle, but we recommend that you try ‘COOKIE,’ the public bike that you can enjoy only in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. The yellow bicycle, ‘COOKIE,’

arranged neatly across Songdo, is a public bicycle operated by Yeonsu-gu. Anyone can use it anywhere, anytime. What is unique about ‘COOKIE’ is that it does not require racks and rental systems like public bicycles operated in other cities. You can rent the bicycle near you and return it at the place of arrival using the bicycle’s lock and communication equipment built into the bicycle.

When it is too close to take a bus or a taxi, when you want to get around quickly inside Songdo and visit various attractions, or when you want to fully enjoy the weather and scenery, use ‘COOKIE,’ the yellow public bicycle. It’s easy and convenient to use. You can run on it anywhere inside Yeonsu-gu.

Delicate Presentation of Schumann’s Life

Pianist, Kun-woo Paik, who is referred to as the ‘Truth- seeker on the Keyboard,’ will hold a piano recital at Art Center Incheon on March 6. At this concert, Paik will depict both the younger days of Schumann, when he was filled with inspirations, and his latter days, when his life was gradually stained with madness. Based on extensive research and study, he attempts to express the composer’s music world more tri-dimensionally. He will perform the representative pieces of Schumann as well as the songs that give a glimpse of his dark side.

‘Kun-woo Paik and Schumann’ will start with ‘Abegg- Variationen,’ which is Schumann’s first piece, followed by

‘Drei Fantasiestücke’, ‘Arabeske’, ‘Gesänge der Frühe’, and

‘Kinderszenen.’ The concert ends with the last piano piece of Schumann, ‘Geistervariationen.’ The audience will be able to rediscover the songs by Schumann, who bloomed in pure passion, suffered through music and love, and walked a path of pain through the melody heard from the delicate hands of Kun-woo Paik.

Extending Korean Language Class for Foreigners.

The Korean Language Class, which is winning favorable feedback from foreigners living in the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), offers more courses and adds morning courses to facilitate learning.

The Korean Language Class turned from in- person classes to non-contact online courses since the outbreak of COVID-19. It previously offered 22 courses over three terms, and this year, it will add 14 courses for a total of 36 courses over three terms. Attaching ‘Certification Sign’ at Global Customer-friendly Businesses in Songdo

Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZA) selected nine restaurants that foreigners can visit conveniently inside Songdo International City and gave them certification signs indicating that the place is a ‘Global Customer-friendly Business.’

The certification sign is being put up as a part of plans to lessen the linguistic inconveniences experienced by foreign residents of Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ), improve the residential environment, and make English universal.

what is Seollal?

Seollal is the first day of the year when you throw off the past things and make a new start with a new mental attitude and plans. We use the solar calendar now, but the lunar calendar was used in the past and thereby it is January 1 according to the lunar calendar. In 1985, Seollal was designated as the ‘Folklore Day’ holiday, and people enjoy the three-day holidays from the eve to the day after Lunar New Year’s Day.

why do you have ‘tteokguk

(rice cake soup)’ on lunar New year’s day?

The white of bar rice cake represents sobriety and immaculateness. People have rice cake soup with the wish to wash away bad memories and have good things happen. The bar rice cake also symbolizes long life and family prosperity. Also, since the slices of the bar rice cake resemble yeopjeon, which were coins used in the past as currency, they represent the wish for economic affluence in the New Year.
