Wolmi Park in November in beautiful autumn colors

On November 1, the long-awaited ‘phased return to normal life’ began.

The frustration of two years following the onset of COVID-19 will be resolved with new things. We will appreciate the ‘preciousness’ of ordinary life that we were so familiar with that we took for granted and rediscover the ‘joy’ of traveling that brought energy to everyday life.

Now, traveling to find preciousness and joy begins in Incheon. The destination of the first trip is the healing places of Incheon that will relieve frustration from pent up over the past couple of years.

The long-awaited ‘phased return to normal life’ has begun.

COVID-19 is still with us, but hearts are throbbing with the first step towards a normal daily life, which has been stopped for the past two years. For the ‘Living with COVID-19’ plan, which begins in deep in the autumn, we chose some safe and beautiful healing spots in Incheon that will alleviate some of the frustration you had while staying home. Walk or ride on two wheels, but don’t put down your guard yet. Don’t forget to follow the COVID-19 social distancing rules for everyone’s safety.

POINT. 1

Incheon Grand Park

Incheon Grand Park is a clean resting place with a huge forest. The park is 2,665,000㎡, equivalent to the area of Yeouido, and is studded with hidden attractions, such as forest trails, lake, and reed marsh. In the fall, maidenhair and zelkova trees adorn the park with their colors from the front gate and hold a parade of autumn foliage. Tall trees along the Metasequoia Road at the foot of Gwanmosan Mountain look as though they are ready to turn the world red all the way up to the sky. Walk anywhere in any direction you want, and the park gives off the fresh smell of the forest and a cushiony trail.

It's a good place to be anytime.

POINT. 2

Sindo, Sido, Modo Islands

There are unfrequented islands that come in sight in just ten minutes by boat from Sammok Pier in Yeongjongdo. Since these three islands are connected by bridges, they are often called the ‘Three Brothers Islands: Sindo, Sido, and Modo Islands.’ You can take a look around the place on a bicycle in half a day. When you step on the pedal, the golden fields, tidal flats exposing their bare earth, and islanders slowly pass by you. At Baemikkumi Sculpture Park on the edge of Modo Island, the work by sculptor Lee Il-ho stands against the sea wind. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee at a small café there.

Gyeongin Ara Waterway

Gyeongin Ara Waterway is an inland waterway that stretches 18km in a width of 80m from the lower reaches of Hangang River to the sea off Incheon. The place is frequented by many people, as parks, promenades, and bicycle roads are well laid out on both sides of the waterway. In particular, as it is the starting point of a bicycle route that stretches out to the entire country, you can easily find a procession of cyclers riding along with the wind. There are Eight Ara Waterway Views with wonderful scenery, such as waterfalls, observatories, and camping sites, sparkling along the waterway. Stop by a place with an excellent view to cool off in the breeze while riding along the stream. It will blow away all your anxieties.

Sorae Marsh Ecological Park

Sorae Marsh Ecological Park was built on a wide tidal flat and is the only wetland ecological park in the capital area.

A red windmill spins in the middle of the field of reeds that wave even with the delicate wind. The tang of the sea tickles the tip of the nose. You can find countless lifeforms that coexist in the tidal flat and their stories stacked upon each other along the neatly laid trail. The old salt farm, the salt warehouse that stands aside it, and the East Asian seepweed that gets redder than autumn leaves attract photographers and tourists from all over the country.

Baedari Secondhand Bookstore Alley

Yeonsu-gu

Bangmulgwan-gil (Museum Rd.)

Wolmi Park

Baedari Secondhand Bookstore Alley is the only secondhand bookstore alley in Incheon. The place has a huddle of large and small bookstores, such as ‘Hanmi Bookstore,’ famous as the filming location for the TV dramas ‘Flutter, Flutter, Butterfly’ and ‘Abel Bookstore.’

Each store is filled with books, waiting for their new owners, stacked up to the ceiling in an old-fashioned way. Stores are still visited by customers who know the fun of choosing books from a stack as though they are searching for a treasure. The ‘Baedari Match Village Museum’ at the end of the alleyway exhibits old things that are not available today to bring out distant memories from childhood.

Address: 18-1, Geumgok-ro, Dong-gu, Incheon

Yeonsu-gu Bangmulgwan-gil (Museum Rd.) is a trail that runs adjacent to the museum and time-honored temple at the foot of Cheongnyangsan Mountain (172m). Enjoy the sound of rustling leaves under your feet while walking along the trail. Stop by the healing spaces, such as Incheon Municipal City Museum, the Memorial Hall for Incheon Landing Operation, and Heungrynsa Temple, designated as a traditional temple last year. When you reach the top, you will be showered with fantastic scenery, a panoramic view of the former Songdo Amusement Park, Songdo International City, and the sea. The toast with a strong butter scent sold at the food stall in front of the museum is a special treat you might want to enjoy after trekking.

Address: Entire area of 26, Cheonnyang-ro 160beon-gil, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon The tourism infrastructure of Wolmi Island was developed centered on ‘Wolmi Park.’ When you pass the park’s main gate, you will find a traditional garden (including Buyongji Pond, Aeryeonji Pond, etc.) along a well-kept trail. The garden was created in the form of a traditional Korean garden to feel the beauty of Korea. Inside the garden, there is a rabbit hole and a deer garden, where you can feed the animals. The park operates eco-friendly electric vehicles called

‘Spotted Seal Shuttle.’ You will be at the top in no time while enjoying the surrounding scenery on the Spotted Seal Shuttle.

The sunset, which marks the end of the day, and the sunrise, which signals the beginning, become more significant as we get closer to the end of the year.

Let’s thank the setting sun for an old year and make a wish to the rising sun for the year to come. You don’t even have to go far. There are various spots to enjoy the sunset and sunrise in Incheon to make unforgettable memories.

Sunset & Sunrise Spots in Incheon

Adieu 2021

BUKSEONG PORT

Recently, amateur photographers who want to capture the sunset on the west coast and factories in a single frame are coming to the port one after another, not to miss the excellent opportunity to shoot a masterpiece, following word-of-mouth. The combination of the factory area seen far away from the port and the sunset adds a great taste to the quiet Bukseong Port where the past remains intact. It is popular among photographers enough to prove that this place is special for its sunset.

Address: 49, Bukseongpo-gil, Jung-gu, Incheon

GEOJAMPO

Geojampo Port in Yeongjongdo Island, Incheon’s usual sunrise spot, attracts many tourists who come to enjoy the sunrise against the backdrop of two uninhabited islands, Maerangdo and Saryeomdo Islands, in front of the port. A pine forest lining up like a folding screen along the beach gives off a unique vibe in connection with Geojampo Port. Maedorang (Maerangdo Island), a small island that can be seen from the coast, is also called ‘Shark Island’

because it resembles a shark fin.

JEONG SEO-JIN

Jeong Seo-jin, Seo-gu, the Western End of Incheon where the ‘Sunset Bell’ Rings

If there is Jeongdongjin (village by the seashore due east of Gwanghwamun Gate) by the East Sea, there is Jeongseojin (village by the seashore due west of Gwanghwamun Gate) in Incheon. Geographically, it is the western end of the Korean Peninsula to the west of Gwanghwamun Gate and a ferry point. It is a famous spot for the sunset that marks the end of the day and a perfect place to make memories.

Address: Jeongseojin Square, Ara Incheon Passenger Terminal, Gyeongin Ara Waterway, Seo-gu, Incheon G-TOWER

The Sky Garden on the 29th floor of the G-Tower, which is considered as one of the best viewing points in Songdo International City, is an attraction you must not miss when visiting G-Tower. The scenery of Central Park, the landmark of Songdo International City having a beautiful view of the nightscape as well as the sunset, is truly fantastic. Also, the IFEZ Promotion Center is located on the 33rd floor. There, you can check out the past, present, and future of Incheon Free Economic Zone at a glance.

Address: 175, Artcenter-daero, Yeonsu-gu

GYEYANGSAN

Gyeyangsan Mountain, standing 395m above sea level, is the highest mountain in Incheon outside Ganghwado Island. It is also a famous sunrise spot in Incheon visited by Incheon citizens as well as outsiders to enjoy the sunrise.

Almost the entire region of Incheon and famous mountains nearby, such as Bukhansan Mountain and Manisan Mountain, come into view. The Gyeyangsanseong Fortress Site is located halfway up Gyeyangsan Mountain with a hexagonal pavilion in front of it. Many people come here and to the top of Gyeyangsan Mountain to make New Year’s wishes while watching the sunrise.

It has been a year since the promulgation of ‘Special Eco- city, Incheon.’ Companies of Incheon have joined the wave of change and are practicing resource circulation. POSCO E&C headquartered in Songdo International City recently held an event called ‘Living a Carbon Neutral Month’ with the community. SK Incheon Petrochem expanded ‘plogging,’ its in- house volunteer campaign, into a pan-national campaign with the residents of Seo-gu since November. The Sheraton Grand Incheon Hotel is working hard to intensify their eco-friendly management by furnishing recycling bins in guestrooms. We visited companies that are taking valuable steps with citizens.

※ Plogging is a compound coined by combining ‘Plocka upp,’ which means ‘to glean grains’ in Swedish, and ‘Jogging,’ which means ‘to run’

in English. It is an activity to pick up trash while walking or running.

01 POSCO E&C,

‘LIVING A CARBON NEUTRAL MONTH’ WITH 100 FAMILIES

On a weekend morning of October 9, more than 100 families were connected to the

‘Online Training for Living a Carbon Neutral Month,’ provided by POSCO E&C. These are citizens who practice reducing waste in their daily lives and who participated in online resource recycling training and experience for a month.

The training of the day was about an upcycling craft using sock legs, the scrap fabric thrown away at a sock factory. It is a resource recycling experience activity that finds new uses by transforming industrial wastes that are difficult to handle into necessary products in everyday life, such as cushions and coasters.

Yoo Gyeong-tae (44) and Han Hyeon-joo (42), a couple who participated with their children, said, “The biggest change that happened in our family while ‘Living a Carbon Neutral Month’ is that we started to care about the environment,” and added, “I started to think once again before buying or disposing of things and talk about the environment with my children often.”

POSCO E&C, alongside the Korea Coast Guard and Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, developed an educational program for teenagers on marine environmental conservation called ‘We Love You, Sea’, and held the first session at Sorae Elementary School, Incheon on October 5. POSCO E&C plans to continue its efforts to provide local communities with various resource recycling experiences.

02 SK INCHEON PETROCHEM,

‘SANHAEJINMI PLOGGING’ TO

PROTECT BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS AND SEAS

SK Incheon Petrochem, located in Seo- gu (borough), is conducting ‘Sanhaejinmi Plogging,’ an eco-friendly campaign to improve health and protect the environment.

‘Sanhaejinmi’ in the title means ‘to protect mountains and seas to cultivate truly beautiful Earth.’ The entire staff participates in the campaign to pick up trash in their everyday life freely.

Now, SK Incheon Petrochem is expanding it into a pan-citizen campaign with the residents of Seo-gu. On October 27, SK Incheon Petrochem signed an ‘MOU to Practice Love for Environment’

From streets to parks and beaches, you can do it anywhere as long as you have a garbage bag. You get to exercise while picking up trash from various places

as if you’re on a treasure hunt.

- Kim Min-jae (36)

Grand Incheon Hotel.

- General Manager Yoon Deok-sik (47) Korea. Besides using eco-friendly materials, it is designed to minimize energy waste through multi-purpose lighting fixtures and natural light through full-glass windows. It also has a system that collects and purifies domestic sewage and recycles it for landscaping purposes.

The hotel is engaged in various eco-friendly activities, such as holding the Earth Day Lights-out event every year, encouraging the use of tumblers and glasses, and promoting the plant pot (companion trees) adoption campaign to help areas affected by forest fires. They also placed equipped guestrooms with an ordinary waste bin as well as a recycling bin.

General Manager Yoon Deok-sik (47) said,

“We continue to make various efforts and provide services to encourage our guests to participate in campaigns that care for the environment. We hope that many people join us in our companionship with the environment at Sheraton Grand Incheon Hotel.”

SHERATON GRAND INCHEON 03

HOTEL,

GOOD BUILDING, GOOD SERVICE MINIMIZING ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGES

Another special aspect of the Sheraton Grand Incheon Hotel is its careful care for the environment, along with the night view of Songdo and the natural scenery of Central Park that can be enjoyed closer than anywhere else.

The Sheraton Grand Incheon Hotel was built to minimize environmental damage from construction and acquired LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental), which is an eco- friendly building certificate from the US Green Building Council in 2011, for the first time in with Seo-gu Office, and agreed to carry

out various resource recycling revitalization campaigns together. For this, they distributed 10,000 biodegradable bags to residents and the collected plastic wastes will be used to produce upcycled products such as T-shirts and towels for donations.

Kim Min-jae (36) was fascinated by the charms of plogging while participating in the in-house volunteer activity. “From streets to parks and beaches, you can do it anywhere as long as you have a garbage bag. You get to exercise while picking up trash from various places as if you’re on a treasure hunt. You never get bored from it. You will feel proud to see the road you just passed becoming cleaner.” He added, “Many small efforts come together to form a powerful force. I hope more people participate in this campaign.”

Charity through Yoga, from Korea to the World

Vu Thi Hong Hau

to the non-profit organization ‘Catchy.’

Catchy supports orphanages with donations.

She supported Nepal after the earthquake and gave donations to Vietnam and the Philippines, though the amount was small.

She also worked with many yoga instructors to help residents overcome stress from COVID-19 through the ‘WeCare’ project. We could feel the positive energy throughout the conversation as she said, “I have met many people through yoga, and I develop further through physical and psychological healing of students.”

interview

05

Vietnamese-born Vu Thi Hong Hau (“Hau”, 46), a yoga instructor, came to Korea in 2012 with her Australian husband, who came to work in Korea. She started her charity work in Korea by starting her yoga classes in English in Incheon. She is now spreading her warm intentions to the world beyond Korea. We met her to hear about her charitable works and her plans for the future.

# STARTING SMALL IN CHARITY THROUGH YOGA WITH STUDENTS When Instructor Hau came to Korea for the first time, she felt a communication barrier.

She exposed herself to the Korean language and culture through various cultural classes at the IFEZ Global Center. She also improved her Korean language skills further by studying Korean at Incheon University for one year. Her life in Korea became much easier after learning Korean. Thanks to learning the language, she was able to make many Korean friends. Hau fell in love with yoga, which she started because she did not feel well, and eventually obtained her license in Singapore. She got to know many foreign friends while teaching yoga in English in Songdo. She is currently giving yoga lessons online due to COVID-19. Her charity work began by encouraging students to donate voluntarily through the donation box during her yoga class.

Because she was always interested in charity, she wanted her students to join in the efforts.

Those small donations, which started from 5,000 won and 10,000 won, have continued to this day. The collected donation is officially donated

# ESTABLISHMENT OF DIFFICULTIES IN SETTING UP A CORPORATION AS A FOREIGNER

In 2018, Hau established her own private business for her full-fledged yoga and charity activities. She founded the Asteya Yoga Songdo studio and started training yoga instructors. She was teaching yoga at the University of Utah Asia Campus at the time. For Hau, who was staying in Korea on a spouse visa while her husband was on a working visa, it was pretty complex for her to register her business. She was barely able to proceed with the business registration thanks to the help of a lawyer. It was not easy to maintain the business due to low revenue. She underwent all the troubles to establish a corporation through a lawyer, paying a lot of money. Still, there were many difficulties in reality, and she had to close it down after about two years due to COVID-19.

Hau is preparing to restart her business, but she is held back sometimes because the procedures to start a business are too complex, and it costs a lot to establish a business. She wishes that the administrative procedures are less complicated because she means to do a good thing in the international city of Songdo. She said the company was short-lived, but it was rewarding that she did some meaningful after establishing the corporation, such as providing yoga classes to GCF staff.

# I WANT TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH TO MANY PEOPLE THROUGH YOGA COMBINED WITH PSYCHOLOGY

Hau and her family currently live in Songdo, Incheon, and plan to move to Australia in two or three years. Her husband is in charge of pilot training at Boeing, and she will spend half a year in Australia and the other half in Korea after moving to Australia. Hau is studying for a psychology degree to become an authentic yoga educator. She is currently studying online and plans to obtain the degree in Australia in two or three years. As she said,

“Yoga is a philosophy. I need psychology.

I want to combine psychology and yoga to solve the mental stress of students.” We could feel the genuine passion for healing people by combining psychology and yoga.

We root for Hau for her hard work in planning and carrying out charitable activities with foreigners and Koreans around her.

I have met many people through yoga, and I develop further through physical and psychological healing of students

There are a variety of platforms where you can enjoy the charms of Incheon online.

For the last one, we prepared a video to feel Incheon’s winter. Enjoy the online winter tour from the scenery of Songdo Central Park and Incheon Open Port covered

with white snow to the Smelt Festival at Ganghwa Island, and learn about safety rules for the cold wave.

OMNI-INCHEON VIEWPOINT, INCHEON’S WINTER

Enjoy the winter scenery of Incheon in white with a video taken from a drone. Central Park, among the tall buildings, creates an unusual landscape with blue waterways and snow- covered trails. The snow piled up on the roofs in the Open Port and Chinatown, where red buildings stand out. The video also captured the scenery of Wolmido Island and Central Park.

On-Incheon

Incheon’s characters, Beomi and Aeini, captured the scene of the smelt and trout festival held in Ganghwa. Ganghwado Smelt and Trout Festival is a representative winter festival where you can make pleasant memories with your family or lovers. For the fish you catch, you can enjoy it raw or by frying at the restaurant. The festival is also full of exciting activities, such as sledding and ice fishing.

WINTER FESTIVAL, GANGHWADO SMELT, AND TROUT FESTIVAL

This video was created by a citizen who was selected as the second group of Incheon Media Creators. The creator filmed and edited the scenery of Cheongna when snow fell. It captured the images of people enjoying the winter, such as children playing on the playground with sleds or making a big snowman.

With the sound of stepping on the snow throughout the video, you can enjoy the healing scenery in the winter while calming your mind.

CHEONGNA, ASMR OF STEPPING ON THE SNOW

It is a video of the sunset and night view taken from the top of Munhaksan Mountain. The nightscape of the city center, embracing the glow of the setting sun and lights twinkling in the dark sky and spreading out splendidly, catches the eye. Another charm of this video is the night lighting, such as various LED rose blossom lights and moon sculptures built in Munhaksan Mountain. The scenery of Munhaksan Mountain has a different atmosphere from the daytime with various colors of lights.

NIGHT VIEW OF INCHEON FROM MUNHAKSAN MOUNTAIN IN WINTER

This video introduces safety rules to prepare yourself against the cold wave in the winter. It includes information on how to manage health, your home, greenhouse, shelters for livestock, and so on. Water meters, for example, should be filled with old clothes, blankets, etc., on the inside and should be sealed on the outside. Also, cover the exposed boiler pipes with insulation and turn on the faucet to prevent freezing when going out for a long time.

<Die Fledermaus>, the second of the 2021 Concert Opera series and the operetta that adorns the world’s opera stages, is a delightful depiction of what happens in the European noble society in the 19th century. In the story, Baron Eisenstein goes to a masquerade with Dr. Falke and returns home alone, leaving the drunken Dr. Falke on the street. Dr. Falke, who suffered humiliation, plans to get revenge at a ball at Prince Orlofsky’s mansion.

Operetta is a genre that takes out the heaviness of opera and embraces popular appeal to approach the public easily and interestingly. The operetta <Die Fledermaus>, which will be put on stage at Art Center Incheon on November 20, is highly anticipated for it is considered the best operetta by many. Exciting waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss II, the

‘King of Waltz,’ splendid dances and delightful lines overwhelm the stage.

It will be conducted by Lee Byung-wook, directed by Jang Jae-ho, and performed by the Korea Coop Orchestra. Also, top vocalists, active on both domestic and overseas stages, such as Hong Joo-young, Jeong Je-yoon, and Yang Gwi-bi joined the cast and will present an incredible show.

‘BOREUMDO ISLAND, LIVES OF 248 PEOPLE’

The Incheon Metropolitan City Museum unfolds the story of ‘Boreumdo Island,’ one of Incheon’s inhabited islands. Boreumdo is a small island in the western part of Ganghwado Island with 248 residents. In the past, more than a thousand people lived here, but as Korea was divided into the North and South, the residents lost the sea and left the island one after another. For the past year, the Incheon Metropolitan City Museum and the Incheon Foundation for Arts & Cultural have visited Boreumdo and met the people and nature left behind. This exhibition is the memory of Boreumdo that they had while researching over the past year. The exhibition is divided into three parts: ‘Living with the Sea’, ‘Cultivating the Land’, and ‘Boreumdo Remembers.’ Let’s take a look at the exhibition and capture the life and story of Boreumdo by heart.

News Brief This month’s city hot news Full-scale Operation of Home Care

Service for COVID-19, Led by Incheon Medical Center

On October 19, Incheon started the operation of home care service for COVID-19 in earnest. Incheon is operating the ‘Incheon Home Care Service for COVID-19’ to efficiently manage asymptomatic and mild confirmed cases while the government is preparing for phased return to ordinary life following the increase in vaccination rates and decrease in the ratio of patients turning into severe cases. ‘Incheon Medical Center,’ designated as a home care service management authority, developed a 24- hour response system, monitors patients’

health twice a day, and requests 119 (Korean equivalent to 911) for emergency transfer when abnormal symptoms are detected.

Asymptomatic patients or mild cases in patients under 70 who do not require hospitalization are subjected to home care service. After receiving home care service for at least ten days, if patients show no abnormal symptoms, the quarantine will be lifted after conducting medical checks by a doctor.

Incheon Begins Operating Five Hydrogen City Buses

Incheon ushered in the era of eco-friendly hydrogen buses. Five hydrogen-fueled city buses started operating from 5 a.m. on October 6. It is the first time that hydrogen buses were introduced to city bus routes in Incheon. The hydrogen buses will operate

on three routes; 13, 46, and 82. A hydrogen bus is a vehicle that uses a hydrogen fuel cell, which chemically reacts with hydrogen with oxygen in the air to generate electricity.

The filter mounted on the bus acts as an air purifier while obtaining oxygen from the air.

30% Discount on Ferry Fare for Groups of Five or More Bicycle Riders Crossing between Wolmido and Yeongjongdo Islands

Incheon supports ferry fares between Wolmido and Yeongjongdo Islands for bicycle riders to expand bicycle tours.

According to an agreement with Sejong Shipping Co., Ltd., a group of bicycle riders using the ferry will be entitled to a discount of approximately 30%, bringing down the price from 3,500 won to 2,500 won. Take a ferry from Wolmido Island and arrive at Yeongjongdo Wharf. You can ride along the bicycle road constructed adjacent to Sky City to Yongyudo Island along the southern coast of Yeongjongdo Island.

Installation of ‘Color Guide Lines’ at 29 Major Intersections in Incheon

Incheon completed applying the ‘color guide line’ to 29 places, including major intersections, to prevent traffic accidents efficiently. By coloring the road’s surface, they guide vehicles on the road in the direction leading to their destinations. These road guidelines at intersections, interchanges, and junctions help drivers recognize their routes clearly and drive without confusion.

In the case of Bupyeong Market Station Five-Way Intersection, where they applied color guide lines in 2019, traffic accidents decreased by about 30% compared to before, and in the case of Songnim Five- Way Intersection, accidents dropped by about 50%.

Publication of ‘2021 Incheon Book Map’ Showing the Current Status of Local Bookstores and Libraries

Incheon is rolling up its sleeves to save local bookstores.

Incheon conducted a survey of all local bookstores from May to June and produced the ‘2021 Incheon Book Map’ showing the current status of 94 local bookstores, 62 public libraries, and 312 small libraries. In addition, Incheon plans to purchase books for public library collections primarily from local bookstores. Various activities are going on to connect citizens and local bookstores, such as developing an online map website, posting

the map on the Incheon city homepage, and publishing it as leaflets to promote local bookstores to citizens and libraries.

What is Living with COVID-19?

This is a new concept emerging as the current COVID-19 pandemic prolongs. It refers to a new quarantine system that focuses on controlling severe cases while partially relaxing social distancing rules.
