Cheju Island is the most attractive resort area in Korea for its exotic landscape, natural beauty, and traditional culture which is quite different from that of the mainland. Until now, most of the recreational facilities and accomodations have been constructed along the coastal areas. Recently, mid-mountain area has been under the pressure for heavy development because it come to the fore as the new sites for tourism facilities and the land price in the coastal area is too high.
The mid-mountain area refers to the land located 200-600m above the sea level. It is a major source of water supply for the island and also has exotic scenic beauty. However it is a vulnerable area to water pollution. Therefore, it is critical to manage this area with the master plan for environmentally sound and sustainable development in order to meet the ever-increasing demand for land development.
The objectives of this project are; 1) to establish the Geographic Information System for the whole island, 2) to formulate the environmentally sound land use plan. However, there remains a strong need to secure the accuracy of the original map, define the criteria of analysis and update the data.
