An emission of something such as gas or radiation is the release of it into the atmosphere. 1
Host: You said you are trying to quit using fossil fuels. Why? What’s wrong with fossil fuels?
Mr. Fine: Well, we all know the story, don’t we? We
get energy mainly from burning fossil fuels, but there 주로 mostly 태 워 서 are a couple of problems with that1. Fossil fuels are not renewable2, which means that sooner or later 조 만 간 we are going to 고갈되다run out of3 them. Also, they harm the environment. When you burn fossil fuels, carbon gas is produced, which has a harmful effect on the climate.

Host: So you decided to change your way of life.
What exactly did you do?
Mr. Fine: To begin with, I gave up city life. Do you 우선, 일단 know what the two things in our lives that burn the 선 행 사
most fossil fuels are? Electricity and transportation.
But who could live entirely without them ? We 1
certainly cannot. If it were not for electricity and =without, But for transportation, we would have to live like primitive 원 시 인 people. So I wanted to set up a more sustainable 만들다 2
system of providing for them, different from the
current one that is so dependent upon fossil fuel energy. It was difficult for me to do this in a city as big as New York.

You use sustainable to describe the use of natural resources when this use is kept at a steady level

Host: In other words, you wanted to enjoy all the
benefits of the modern age, only with a lot less fossil fuels.
Mr. Fine: Exactly. As for electricity, my answer was
solar energy. It’s also the reason I chose New Mexico. The sun shines almost all year round there.
Still, it was not easy for me to get electricity from
sunlight. Solar panels are surprisingly expensive, and I had trouble putting them in place. It was worth = worthy of the effort, though. Now a large part of the electricity used on my farm is provided by my DIY solar system. After going solar, my farm uses only one tenth of the fossil fuel energy used by the average using (X) American household.

Host: And regarding transportation, I hear you now drive a very special truck.
Mr. Fine: Yes. I came up with what I consider a
brilliant idea – biofuel. I bought a diesel truck and
had it converted to run on vegetable oil. Rudolf 개조된 = changed1 식 물 성 기 름 으 로
Diesel, the inventor of diesel engines, actually 발 명 가
intended for farmers to grow their own fuel.2
These days, I no longer go to a gas station to get fuel. I pay regular visits to a local Chinese 주기적으로 방문하다
restaurant and collect waste cooking oil. It does not 폐 식 용 유
cost money and does not send carbon into air. The
only problem is that the truck smells like fried alike (X) chicken, and driving it makes me terribly hungry!d r i v e ( X )

Fine 씨: 네. 제가 생각하기에 아주 기가 막힌 아이 디어를 생각 해 냈거든요. 바이오 연료입니다. 디 젤 트럭을 한 대 사서 식물성 기름으로 달릴 수 있 게 개조했습니다. 디젤엔진의 발명가인 Rudolf Diesel은 애초에 농부들이 스스로 연료를 경작할 수 있도록 하기 위한 의도를 갖고 있었어요. 요즘은 연료를 넣으러 주유소에 가지 않습니다. 동 네 중국 음식점에 주기적으로 방문해서 폐식용유 를 모아와요. 돈이 들지 도 않고 공기 중에 탄소를 배출하지도 않습니다. 유일한 문제는 트럭에서 프 라이드 치킨 냄새가 나서 운전할 때마다 배가 고파 미치겠다는 것뿐이지요! Host: You also started farming. What does food have to do with carbon reduction?

to grow what I eat. Eating locally is another way of reducing carbon emissions. Not only people but
also food travels in this world of global trade. The t r a v e l ( X )

fuel. I grow fruits and vegetables and raise some chickens for daily eggs, just for my dinner table. I also raise goats for milk and ice cream. Without ice If it were not for cream, my happiness couldn’t be complete!

Fine 씨: 저는 생업이 농부는 아닙니다. 그저 먹을 만큼만 재배하려 최선을 다할 뿐이지요. 지역생산 물을 먹는 것은 탄소 배출을 줄이는 또 다른 방법입 니다. 오늘날 세계 무역의 세상에서는 사람 뿐 아니 라 먹거리도 여행을 하거든요. 점심 샐러드에 든 토 마토는 칠레에서 왔을 수도 있습니다. 이 토마토를 여러분에게 가져다주는 것은 제트 연료가 많이 소 모됩니다. 저는 그냥 제 저녁 식탁을 위해 과일과 채소를 재배하고 날마다 먹을 계란을 낳아 줄 닭을 몇 마리 키웁니다. 우유와 아이스크림을 위해 염소 도 키우고요. 아이스크림이 없다면 제 행복은 완전 해질 수 없을 거예요! everyone?
Mr. Fine: When I started this, I set three goals for myself. “Use less oil. Power my life with solar 전기를 공급해라 energy, and eat locally.” It’s been only a year, but I
believe I’ve made significant progress. If we stay = r e m a r k a b l e2
aware and keep trying, I’m certain that we can build a better future. Not everyone can do what I did, but everyone can, and should, try to reduce their 3
carbon consumption.
