The 3th Annual Report of Career Development Center

Since Career Developm ent Center (CDC) has been established on 1999, the CDC has provided variety of career inform ation, guid ance and counselling services to the clients who are mostly young stu dents and p arents.

One of the fundam ental functions of the CDC is operating the career information desk to enable the clients to review a w ide range of books, video tap es, and CD-Roms as the essential tool for planning their career. Career-N et designed to provide self-directed on-line career guidance system and job exhibition regularly op en every year are another important outcomes on the CDC as the efficient delivery models. About 286,669 cases are connected w ith Career-N et during last 9 moths. Classroom-based career education programs, one-to-one and group counselling, telephone advisory service, computer-based advice and information for young p eople and for adults are the results on the CDC for

For individu al' s career planning, many typ es of the vocational p sychology tests such as Vocational Interest, Vocational Fundam ental Skill, Work Valu e, and Career Transition Prep aration have been utilized through computer-based or p ap er-penciled . More than about 240,000 stu dents and adults of cases are examined the vocational p sychology tests to better understand her or himself on during one year . The results and career advice according to its tests w ere provided the clients individu ally and collectively by qu alified professional career counsellor who w orks for CDC.

As the result of analysis on the characteristics of clients on CDC, 87.7% of total clients are young stu dents from prim ary to high school. 68.9% from Seoul and 26.2% from Kyung-gi are m ost area clients from . It can be explained du e to neighboring districts w ith CDC located in . 73.8% of clients visited the CDC by recommendation from others. Mostly never experienced either the vocational p sychology tests(79.1%) or career counselling services(87.8%). Both p eriod in summ er and winter vacation are often visited . The most w anted services in career counselling are understanding self-knowledge, where career information located, planning career, and conflict resolution on their career choice orderly. 74.4 % of cases of face-to-face career counselling are closed on 2nd visits.

As the result of on-line counselling cases in the Career-net, 1,351 cases among 4,326 are for high school stud ent, 1,449 cases are for middle school stu dents, and 1,526 cases are for w om en, job-seeking young p eople, and stu dents at the elementary and

university level. It can be conclud ed that most clients on cyber career counselling are stu dents at the middle and high school level than any others du e to their urgency m atter in deciding further education entrance.

In-service programs for the teachers who w ork for parents and young p eople are operated as the one of significant function on the CDC. For this year 3 tim es of in-service programs to more than 120 teachers w ere served at the CDC.

Semi-conference, titled 'N ational Comp etitiveness, Quality of Life, and Career Guidance' in the career inform ation, guidance and counselling services for the CDC p articip ating with each provincial education and science research institute and practical institute in career developm ent w ere held on last Au g. 31, 2001. The results of the conference w ere recommended to the Ministry of Education

& Human Resource Development for the direction of new start . In addition, classroom-based career education programs w ere developed and disseminated throu gh school activities by the professional career counsellors on the CDC.

Continu ou sly, Career-N et designed for self-directed career guidance system has been up dating for its contents. Easy access, accurate information and diverse services for all diverse groups are the main task in upd ating system . Job dictionary of each target group, a new contents development in m otivating young p eople' s career exploration, and 6 types of vocational p sychology tests in understanding self-knowledge are loaded on a new version of Career-net at the end of this year .

Further recommendations to the CDC for the next year are su ggested as follow ings.

- Keep the goals and objectives of the CDC as the centralized R&D center in the career development at the national level

・Be clear as to what the CDC can and cannot offer

・Teach individuals career developm ent competencies to become self-directed managers of their ow n career development process.

.Create and disseminate career guidance program and tool such as an individu alized personal career plan and vocational psychology tests

- Initiative and establish the legislation and policy for steering career

information, guidance and counselling services for all.

- Update continu ou sly the Career-N et designed to help individu al' s self-directed career guidance system .

- Provide the professional development program s to teachers and counsellors for being qu alified professionals.

- Build extensive partnership w ith both schools and PES(Public Employment Services) sector at the local, state and national level.

- Design and op erate the local CDC m odel to deliver the essential career information, guidance and counselling services for local distincts.
