주택의 구조 및 디자인과 관련된 요인들에는 화재로 인한 사고와 사망
의 안전장치가 허술한 경우 부상이나 사망에 이를 수 있다.
난방장치는 지나칠 경우와 부족할 경우 모두 건강에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 난방이 부족할 경우는 저체온증이나 동상, 심지어 사망의 위험을 높일 수 있다. 난방장치의 위생상태가 저조할 때 각종 호흡기질환 에 걸릴 수 있다. 난방이 지나치면 심혈관질환, 질식, 트라우마, 탈수 증 상을 일으킬 수 있고 난방장치로부터 나오는 고온의 공기 등은 화상의 원 인이 될 수 있다.
환기장치의 부족 혹은 자연환기의 부족은 두통, 졸림, 메스꺼움, 구토 증상을 유발할 수 있고, 천식, 각종 호흡기계 증상 및 질환, 설사 및 고열 증상을 일으킬 수 있다. 외부 공기와의 차단을 막는 에어실링(air seal-ing) 공법은 환기 부족을 통해 호흡장애, 호흡기질환, 천식을 유발할 수 있다. 질 높은 인테리어는 정신건강을 향상시키는 효과가 있다(표 1-3 참 조).

주택의 지역사회 환경적 특성은 자동차 및 교통과의 인접성, 지역물류
지역사회 내의 다양한 서비스 접근성은 건강을 증진시킨다. 예를 들어, 횡단보도, 자전거길, 놀이터, 대중교통에의 접근성은 건강을 유지 및 증 진시키고, 공원에의 접근성은 비만, 당뇨, 암, 뇌졸중의 발생을 낮출 수 있다. 지역사회 내의 상점들의 위치도 건강에 영향을 미칠 수 있는데, 예 를 들어 패스트푸드점과 편의점이 가까울 때 비만이 증가할 수 있고, 술 집과 담배판매점이 가까울 때 술과 담배로 인한 건강문제들이 발생할 위 험이 증가한다.
주택과 건강의 관련성에 관한 이상의 문헌고찰 결과를 인과경로 (causal pathway)로 〔그림 1-2〕부터 〔그림 1-6〕까지 정리하였다. 〔그 림 1-2〕는 물리적 요인들, 〔그림 1-3〕은 사회경제적 요인, 〔그림 1-4〕는 주택의 구조 및 디자인 요인, 〔그림 1-5〕는 지역사회 요인이 각각 건강결 과에 미치는 영향을 보여주는 인과경로도이다. 마지막으로 〔그림 1-6〕은 물리적 요인, 사회경제적 요인, 주택의 구조 및 디자인 요인, 그리고 지역 사회 요인이 어떤 건강결과에 영향을 미치는지 종합한 것이다.
