❍ 전국 지질유산 조사 사업의 정기화
국토의 자연 특성을 조사하는 전국자연환경조사는 매 10년마다 수행되고 있는데, 지질 조사는 문헌적 소개에 그치고 있다. 따라서 전국자연환경조사에 지질 분야를 강화할 필요가 있다. 암석 자체가 시간이 흐르면서 변하고 그 특성이 달라진다. 따라서 모니터링 이 필요하다.
❍ 지질유산 정밀 조사의 강화
지질유산 정밀 조사는 시간, 인력 그리고 재원이 필요한 분야이다. 한 번 조사하면 상당기간 활용될 수 있다. 따라서 현재보다 재원과 시간을 충분히 투입하면 국토 전반의 지질유산 현황을 보다 구체적으로 조사 및 정리할 수 있다.
❍ 국제 활동 연계 강화
지질공원이든 지오트레일이든 국외 탐방객이 환경 용량에 맞으면서 많을수록 국가 경제에 도움이 된다. 따라서 한국을 국제사회에 널리 알릴 수 있도록 국제 활동을 강화하 여야 한다. 이는 해당 분야 전문가의 양성, 국제 정보의 수집 및 분석, 해당 국제 관련 단체와 직간접 교류 등으로 이루어진다. 따라서 국가적 교류프로그램을 마련하여 지속성 이 있도록 할 필요가 있다.
❍ 지오트레일 관련 법·제도의 마련
지질공원과 함께 지오트레일 지정제도를 도입할 필요가 있다. 대상 법으로는 생태관광 이 명시된 ｢자연환경보전법｣과 지질공원제도가 규정된 ｢자연공원법｣이 그 대상이다.
｢자연공원법｣상 자연공원에는 아직 선형 개념이 없으므로 우선 생태관광의 일부로서 진입한 다음 지질공원과 통합하는 방안도 검토해볼 만하다.
❍ 자발적 지오트레일 운영에 대한 전문가들의 지원
지질학은 경험과 현대의 과학적 지식을 기반으로 한다. 지자체에서 지오트레일을 운영 할 경우 많은 전문가의 도움이 필요하다. 따라서 재능기부 형태의 전문가 참여가 필요하 다. 이를 위하여 가칭 ‘지질유산 연구회’를 결성하여 체계적으로 지원 활동을 하면 우리나 라에서 지질학의 대중화는 전망이 밝을 것이다.
❍ 국가탐방로 제도의 도입(통합 구축 방안 마련)
현재 각 부처별로 흩어져 있는 탐방로는 통합될 필요가 있다. 따라서 개별 탐방로의 특성을 최대한 살리면서 통일된 이미지와 운영 체계를 가질 수 있도록 통합 운영 체제가 필요하다.
❍ 후속 과제의 필요
본 과제는 지오트레일 제도의 도입 타당성에 대한 기초적 사항을 주로 다루었다. 따라 서 국가 지오트레일 제도를 도입 및 운영 시 필요한 세부 지침에 대한 후속 연구가 필요하다.

Abstract
A Feasibility Study Regarding the Introduction of the National Geotrail System in Korea.
There are many important geological heritages in Korea and some of them are specially utilized as geosites or geotrails of geoparks which should be certified under the Natural Park Act. Though geoparks are one of the best tools for utilizing the geological heritages to promote the local economy through sustainable tourism, there are several limits to pursue the geoparks;
1) Not all the regions having geological heritages can not be certified as geoparks due to the restriction policy for the total number of national geoparks about 10-12; 2) There are places that have less than 20 geological heritages(geosites) not eligible for the national geopark; 3) Not all the local communities do have the ability to operating the geopark etc. Therefore, we need a complementary ways of utilizing the geological heritages where geoparks are not available. We think geotrail can be good nationwide tools to enhance both the awareness of the geological heritages and their utilization to local economy.
We studied the characteristics of geotrail such as definition, concept, foreign examples, and analysed the difference between eco-tourism and geotourism etc. We suggested the introduction of national geotrail system for the firm bases of protecting the geological heritages and promoting the local economy.
Regarding this, overall direction, basic principles and operational guidance, demonstration project etc. for the national geotrail system are provided.
