[A] Kitty Genovese got home from work very late. As a bar manager, she had to close and clean up before she could head home to her Queens, New York, apartment. Usually her late hours were no problem. But on March 13, 1964, when the 28-year-old Genovese parked her car at 3 a.m., there was some one waiting for her. As Kitty began to walk toward her home, the man stabbed her. Despite Genovese’s repeated calls for help, none of the people nearby apartment building who heard her cries called the police to report the incident. The attack first began at 3:20 a.m., but it was not until 3:50 a.m. that someone first contacted the police. Police questioned Genovese’s neighbors and discovered that at least 38 people had witnessed the killer attacking Genovese, yet no one tried to intervene. Psychological studies of the incident led researchers to coin the term “bystander effect,” or “Genovese syndrome.” When experts refer to the Genovese syndrome, they are theorizing that the neighbors’ failure to act was due to “diffusion of responsibility.” In other words, there were so many people watching the crime that no one person felt they had any personal responsibility because they were sure that someone else would do something.

[B] One of the great cop-outs in life is to avoid making choices. Not choosing can save us from risk. One way that a person can avoid making choice is to let others be their guide for how to live. This is what 19th-century philosopher Nietzsche calls the mentality of the herd.

A useful illustration can be gained by watching sheep. A friend of mine once noted that sheep only become really stupid when they are separated from the flock. They have no guiding principles of their own and thus follow the leader, who also generally has no idea where she is heading. Sheep are programmed genetically to operate as a flock. This has a protective function as it provides some safely for when a wolf comes. If you are in a flock of 100 sheep then the odds are you will not be eaten. If you leave the flock it is a certainty that you will be.

* cop-out 책임 회피 [C] Being socially responsible means that people and organizations must behave ethically and with sensitivity toward social, cultural, economic, and environmental issues. The individual social responsibility includes the engagement of each person towards the community where he lives, which can be expressed as an interest towards what is happening in the community, as well as in the active participation in the solving of some of the local problems. Under community we understand the village, the small town or the residential complex in the big city, where lives every one of us. Each community lives its own life that undergoes a process of development all the time. And every one of us could take part in that development in different ways, for example by taking part in cleaning of the street on which he lives, by taking part in organization of an event, connected with the history of the own or the village or by rendering social services to children without parents or elderly people.
