An Investigation of Pre-service Physics Teachers’ Moral Sensitivity on Socioscientific Issues Related to Physics

Although research on socioscientific issues (SSIs) in the field of science education is increasing, much of the effort has been focused on the student rather than the teacher, and most of the interest has been in biological or environmental issues such as global climate change, genetic engineering, stem cell research, and many modern health care options. The purpose of this study is to investigate pre-service physics teachersï moral sensitivity in the context of physics-related SSIs. Moral sensitiv- ity in this study was defined as the ability to recognize when a situation contained moral aspects.
When confronted with a situation, such as SSI, a person with moral sensitivity is aware of how possible resolutions of the situation have the potential to affect others in a negative manner. This study found that the degree of moral sensitivity of pre-service physics teachers was 23.9% and that there was no meaningful difference by gender and context. Also, responses with no consideration of moral aspects or with consideration of social aspects were dominant compared to responses with explicit expressions of an ethical-moral aspect within the topic.
