Assessment of SSM/I sea ice concentration using Kompsat-1 EOC imagery

We have obtained Kompsat-1 EOC images (6.6 m resolution, panchromatic) of the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice

and compared them with the SSM/I sea ice concentration(SIC) calculated from NASA Team Algorithm (NTA). SSM/I

NTA discriminates first-year ice and multi-year ice in the Arctic and ice type A and B in the Antarctic. Kompsat-1

EOC launched in 1999 is 18km-swath push-broom sensor and has data storage of up to 800km image in a single

orbit. We obtained 10 orbital images for Arctic sea ice edges from July to August and 11 orbital images of Antarctic

sea ice images from September to November 2005. We have classified ice types into White ice(W), Grey ice(G),

and Dark-grey ice(D) from EOC images using supervised classification and visual correction. EOC SIC were derived

and compared with SSM/I SIC. In summertime of the Arctic, EOC SIC was not correlated with SSM/I SIC (the

correlation coefficient was 0.574) due to rapid temporal and spatial variation of sea ice. In springtime of the Antarctic,

SSM/I SIC has good correlation with EOC (W+G, excluding D; the correlation coefficient was 0.830). Consequently,

we have concluded that NTA-derived SSM/I SIC includes white ice and grey ice, but not dark-grey ice.
