The concentration of trace element in charcoal has been investigated. For this purpose, 5 samples were collected consist of both domestic (3 types) and imported products (5 types from three countries) commonly available in market. The concentrations of constituent metals in charcoal were determined by total digestion by ICP-AES(Ultima 2C, JY) and ICP-MS (DRC-ICP-MS, Perkin Elmer). The concentration of trace metals in solid charcoal varied widely from sample to sample ranging from 118 ppm (Zn) to 5 ppb (As). The diversity of metal concentration appeared to be affected by the distinct nature of raw materials and/or the processes involved in their production. However, concentrations of certain trace metals were significantly high in solid charcoal in certain samples. Although there emission concentration were below the permissible exposure limit (PRL) set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). As according to some studies grilling can be carcinogenic, a proper regulation against the use of charcoal is desirable from a toxicological viewpoint to reduce potential health risks associated with its use.
