Helles Kitchen’s first meeting with authentic Korean cuisine

One of Norway’s biggest food

bloggers, Helle Øder Valebrokk, who runs helleskitchen.org, was invited by the Embassy to experience Korean cuisine at the newly established restaurant Gangnam in Oslo.

In her blog, she has written about her experience at Gangnam restaurant and the various dishes that she tried out as well as her own Korean cuisine endeavors. Additionally, she has provided an introduction to Korean table etiquette and seasonal eating. She describes Korean food as sweet, sour and spicy all at the same and that her eyes grew larger as the food was approaching the table. The picture below is from her own successful cooking of a Korean dish.

Commemoration of 70

th

anniversary of liberation

On 15 August, 70 years had passed since the liberation of Korea. On this day, President Park Geun-hye held a commemoration speech.

“This is a historic day that marks both the 70th anniversary of our liberation and the 67th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Korea.” She emphasized Korea’s

strengths and weakness, what Korea has to be proud of and what should be worked on for future progress.

“Today, we have become a country producing some of the world’s finest electronic goods, automobiles, steel, ships and petrochemical products, and we stand tall as an economic powerhouse with export figures that are the sixth largest in the world.”

She further spoke of a unified Korea and the benefits of cooperation on the peninsula.

“When the two Koreas are reunited as one, a new chapter of hope and miracles can unfold. We can outdo the “Miracle on the Han River” with a “Miracle on the Korean Peninsula.” A peacefully-reunited Korean Peninsula will be free from the fear of nuclear weapons and war; a place where all eighty million enjoy freedom and human rights. Korea made whole will spur peace in East Asia and emerge to become a new engine of growth for the world that helps revitalize the global economy.”

“By combining the respective strengths of the two Koreas, linking the transport networks on the Peninsula with the rest of the continent, and building bridges between the

Eurasian continent and Pacific economies, we will unleash ever greater opportunities not just for Korean businesses but also for individual people. Let us all stand together and prepare for unification, and set our vision on a 100th anniversary where the dream of peaceful unification has become reality.

Ambassador Lee at the opening of a new king crab packing station

On Tuesday 24 August, Ambassador Lee attended a new king crab packing station at Nes that was broadcasted by NRK. There is a continuously greater demand on

Norwegian king crabs around the work and particularly by Asian countries. The king crab tanks in the eastern part of Norway are close to the airport so that the transport is easy when the king crabs are transported out of the country. The facility at Nes can keep up to seven tons of crabs – a commodity that Asians appreciate greatly.

Ambassador Lee emphasized the importance of the Norwegian king crab in Korea due to its quality and because it can be imported throughout the entire year.
