Analysis on the Types of Questions and the Structure of the Discourse Used in Pre-service Science Teachers’ Microteaching

The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of questions used by pre-service science teachers and the structure of the discourse during the microteaching process. Data were gathered through microteaching records of 18 pre-service science teachers. The result of the analysis on question types showed that pre-service science teachers mostly utilized questions for eliciting information, followed by shaping understanding. In the result of the analysis on discourse structure, 68% of the discourses revealed an independent relation. This result showed that pre-service science teachers did not utilize various types of question and structures of discourse. This has a significant influence on deciding the structure of the participation. The results suggest that a program for cultivating the ability of pre-service science teachers to ask questions should be provided in the training curriculum for science teachers. The result of this study should provide basic information in the curriculum of education colleges to ensure the practical teaching competence of pre-service science teachers.
