When they came out into the open field, Rollie ran back to get Peg to play with him. He ran around her in circles, barking cheerfully, jumping up on her, inviting her to run a race with him, to throw him a stick, to come alive. His high spirits were ridiculous. But spreading. Peg gave one little jump to match his. Rollie took this as a threat, a pretend play-threat. He planted his feet low and barked loudly at her, laughing between barks. He was so funny, she thought, when he laughed that way. She laughed back and gave another pretend-threatening jump at him. We need to remove the word failure from our vocabulary, replacing it instead with learning experience.

To fail is to learn: we learn more from our failures than from our successes. With success, sure, we are pleased, but we often have no idea why we succeeded. With failure, it is often possible to figure out why, to ensure that it will never happen again. Scientists know this.

Scientists do experiments to learn how the world works.

Sometimes their experiments work as expected, but often they don’t. Are these failures? No, they are learning experiences. Many of the most important scientific discoveries have come from these so-called failures.

Most of our non-residential buildings are empty and unused for a large proportion of their lives. Schools are mostly empty during the holidays, the weekends, and at night. The buildings are only occupied for 30 % of the year. Office and commercial buildings are probably only occupied 50 % of the time. Libraries, theaters, sports centers, and the like are probably only at best occupied for 50 % of their life. For these reasons, we need to re-think the concept of single-use buildings, and think about buildings that serve more than one function, rather than being left empty for long periods. It is an incredible waste of built assets to have them standing empty.

As babies, Professor Alfred Adler said, we feel inferior to those around us who can communicate, and so we learn how to talk. His point is that comparing is both a normal and a necessary part of the process of growing up. Adler stressed the importance of role models ― people you believe are superior. He felt that the desire to be more like those people motivates you to grow and learn. A role model does not have to be somebody you know personally.

Society sets up role models for us. Your father may have told you that a certain action is not what “nice” people do.

You learn what is admired behavior in your school, your community, your company. Few of us get through life totally unaware of the many standards against which to measure ourselves. The urge to fit in or to excel is a powerful motivating force.

If you want to start running each morning, it is essential that you choose a simple cue (like always lacing up your sneakers before breakfast) and a clear reward (such as a sense of accomplishment from recording your miles). But countless studies have shown that a cue and a reward, on their own, are not enough for a new habit to last. Only when your brain starts expecting the reward ― craving the sense of accomplishment ― will it become automatic to lace up your jogging shoes each morning.

The cue, in addition to triggering a routine, must also trigger a craving for the reward to come.

One of life’s great pleasures is to share food with family and friends. What we don’t always realize is how strongly our family and friends influence the way we eat.

When we are with people we enjoy, we often lose track of . Why does eating with other people make us do that? In the excitement of the conversation, we forget whether we ate two bread rolls or three, or whether we had seconds or thirds of the pasta. We are so involved in the conversation with our friends or family that the whole idea of monitoring what is going into our mouths is strange. We know we ate, but we don’t know how much.

Consider the following statements: “War continues.”

“No sign of peace.” Does our brain treat these two sentences differently, despite their identical meaning? A new study suggests it does. British scientists showed that we are words that carry negative meaning than those that are positive. Volunteers were exposed to a word for a fraction of a second ― too short a time to consciously read the word ― and then asked to guess whether the word was neutral or had emotional content either positive or negative. The participants were most accurate at noticing the negative words. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are not clear, but the researchers believe that the brain might process negative stimuli faster than positive ones.

Cost is an important design requirement for most manufactured products. If a product costs too much, it will not sell. To minimize cost, designers remove unnecessary parts or choose the most cost-effective ones so that the product represents the best value at the lowest cost. Consider, (A) , a radio tower that must withstand high winds. Before adding bracing to the design, the engineer evaluates the cost of various types of bracing. And he chooses the most effective bracing available at the lowest cost. Vehicle manufacturers also design their products to sell at competitive prices, removing unnecessary parts. There are two major ways for groups to reach a decision at a meeting: voting and reaching a consensus.

(A) On the other hand, consensus is generally a more effective decision-making procedure that allows all points of view to be heard. But it is more difficult and frequently more time-consuming.

(B) It has its drawbacks, however, namely that it creates a win-lose situation for group members. Voting can cause certain members to be identified by their minority position on a decision.

These days, there is so much trash in the subway station, especially around the trash cans. So I think trash cans in subway stations should be removed.

Peter : When I first travelled to London, I noticed there were no rubbish cans in the station and the station was quite clean. It may be strange without trash cans at first, but stations will be much cleaner than before.

Jane : If there were no trash cans in stations, people would just throw their garbage everywhere. Garbage would be piled up all around, making them dirtier.

In thinking about helping behavior, males are more likely to help in contexts in which a perceived danger is present and they feel competent to help. For example, males are more likely than females to help a person who is struggling with a flat tire by the roadside; automobile problems are an area about which many males feel competent. In contrast, when the context involves volunteering time to help a child with a personal problem, females are more likely to help than males are because there is little danger present, and females feel more competent at caring for children. In many cultures, females show more care-giving behavior than males do.

(A) There was a mother in India who had tried everything to stop her child from eating chocolate all of the time.

With every option exhausted, she finally took her little boy to see the wise man of the town. She explained her problem to the wise man and he listened carefully.

(B) The boy then walked away never to eat chocolate again.

His mother remained to ask the wise man why he had waited a month to give that advice. The wise man waited until the boy had left the house and then he smiled. His reply was simple: “I had to give up eating chocolate first.”

(C) Thirty days later the woman returned with her son.

When they entered his home, the wise man looked the boy in the eye with a piercing stare, and after a few moments of silence he said: “Give up chocolate, and don’t eat it anymore unless your mother says so!”

(D) The man thought for a moment and then asked the woman to take the boy away and come back in 30 days’

time. The woman did not expect that advice. She was a little unhappy because she did not understand his intention, but she followed his instructions anyway.

One of the saddest observations I have made centers around how reluctant many of us are to learn from those closest to us ― our parents, spouses, children, and friends.

Rather than being open to learning, we shut ourselves away out of embarrassment, fear, or pride. It is almost as if we say to ourselves, “I have already learned all that I can from this person; there is nothing else I can learn.” It is sad because often the people closest to us know us the best.

They are sometimes able to see ways in which we are acting in a self-defeating manner and can offer very simple solutions. If we are too proud to learn, we lose out on some wonderful, simple ways to improve our lives.

Q : What did Sarah enjoy doing during the trip?

A: She .

My Trip to Elliot Island

Sarah Johnson (Hillside High School) I travelled to Elliot Island with my father last year.

It is a small private island which is famous for its huge artificial garden and old lighthouse. In the morning, we visited the white lighthouse on the hill.

But it was too hot and I was exhausted while climbing up the hill. And the view was disappointing.

Then, we took a mini-train around the garden to see the trees and flowers. But it was so crowded with people that we couldn’t enjoy the train ride. Luckily, however, we found a horse-riding place. My father got a horse and we rode it together. It was my first time riding a horse with my father, and I enjoyed it. I really liked that part of the trip.
